So, I guess the Kids in the UK like Status Quo??

I was just home for the Thanksgiving holiday and visited my grandmother. She had just received a letter from my 11-year-old cousin who lives in Aberdeen Scotland (they also lived in London for years)....so she's basically telling me about the letter, very pleased to have received such a long letter from her grandson, and mentions that Geoffry is going to a concert that his dad bought him tickets to....so, I ask if I can read it because I'm obv. interested in what groups he likes....

...soo I'm thinking "Hmmm I wonder if he's going to a 50 Cent concert or maybe he likes those Brit bands like Coldplay and Keane, etc....so I start reading the letter and he says, "My father got me tickets to Status Quo. They are my favorite band. I'm not sure which of my friends I'm going to take"

Needless to say I was pretty suprised, but being an American I guess I know pretty much nothing about Status Quo....are they still pretty popular in the UK or is my cousin just a heads-down boogie weirdo?? Please enlighten me.

*I'm thinking they might be like the UK's version of Aerosmith where it wouldn't be that surprising that a younger kid is into them??

isolated incident

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

They're more like the UK version of Grand Funk Railroad. Nobody likes them anymore, they can't get arrested these days.

We Buy a Hammer For Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 17:14 (twenty-one years ago)

They have a bewildering number of fans. Or at least they did when i was growing up. Half (or so it seemed) of my class at school liked them and had the denims and patches to prove it. The Mighty Quo Army was a potent force in society, so much so that BBC1 showed a live quo gig one Friday night attended by Prince Charles. I seem to remember they had a commentator who gave these reverential breathy voice- overs, such as 'The massed ranks of the quo army. Unrivalled. Respected. Blah Blah.' And Status Quo were shite.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

man, the 50 Cent reference there really threw me, I thought you were talking about Stat Quo, the new Shady/Aftermath signee.

Josh Love (screamapillar), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Dadaismus they did actually get in the Top 20 about a month ago, believe it or not. but hey when i was a kid i loved Status Quo too (mainly just 'In The Army Now').

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

i should stress i was well over that shit by the time i was 11 (i had Living In A Box, nothing else needed).

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

They got to #21 this week.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

So am I a rockist because I didn't know Status Quo got in the charts? It's confusing, this rockism palaver

We Buy a Hammer For Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

This has just reminded me of a vivid memory of a roundabout on a playground near my house in Worcester when I was about 10 when "In the army now" came out, someone had graffitied "IN THE ARMY NOW - QUO ARE BACK!!!!!"

They were pretty big back then, I think.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

in the town i grew up in somebody had scrawled 'SCARLET FANTASTIC' on a roadsign and it remained there for a good five years or more.

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember a few kids in my school liking the Quo between the ages of about 9 and 13. I'm pleased to see this rite of passage is still going on. I praise the parents.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I'm thinking his father might have gotten him into the Quo....I remember when I visited him at his apartment in Paris he had a big framed poster of the album cover of Misfits by the Kinks.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

why wouldn't the kids be into the band that gave us "Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You" and "Hell Hole"?

Stormy Davis (diamond), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree, but as well as liking Spinal Tap what do they make of Status Quo?

We Buy a Hammer For Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

have the Quo had a top 40 here in Australia ?

herewego lad, Wednesday, 1 December 2004 02:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Dunno about Quo, but where I grew up I remember seeing massive ADAM AND THE ANTS graffiti before I even went to school, so that was pre-1979, and the roundabout covered in NICHOLAS PARSONS IS THE NEO-OPIATE OF THE PEOPLE. Maybe Harrow-boy SteveM remembers that one too ?

darren (darren), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

sadly not

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 11:26 (twenty-one years ago)

but i'm no Harrow-boy! i guess it has multiple meanings...

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 11:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Quo fans have always been rather fanatic, so I guess his dad was the one who brainwashed him into liking them. :-)

For the record, there is a lot of older music more worth getting into...

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 11:28 (twenty-one years ago)

The only kid I know who is really into music is this 8-year old who told me that his favourite bands ever were Nirvana, Madness and the Tremeloes.

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I quite liked Status Quo when I was between 10 and 12.

Mind you, that was between 1973 and 1975.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Seems some of the kids never grow out of liking the Quo.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

For some aging sad-acts not to have grown out of liking "The Quo" is one thing.

For youngsters to be developing a liking for them in 2004 otoh is deeply wrong.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

As a Yank, I originally pictured them as a "Nuggets"-type one hit wonder based on "Pictures of Matchstick Men" and didn't realize they had this whole other career as a monster boogie band. But then I don't understand the Sensational Alex Harvey Band either.

Thanks everybody. Not only do I now have 'Rockin' All over the world' in my head, I have also come to the disturbing conclusion that I quite like it.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

"As a Yank, I originally pictured them as a "Nuggets"-type one hit wonder based on "Pictures of Matchstick Men""

Which cruel, miserable, heartless, bastard shattered this illusion of a beter world?

"But then I don't understand the Sensational Alex Harvey Band either."

Persevere! Have you heard (their versions of) "Framed"? "Next"? "Gang Bang"? "Giddy-Up-A-Ding-Dong"? "Delilah"? "Boston Tea Party"?

"Sensational Alex Harvey Band

SAHB without the late, great Mr. Harvey himself? Really? What on earth would be the point of that?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

The Quo had a bit of a resurgence after Live Aid didn't they? Don't know why cos for me they were never the same once they drafted in that lanky pillock with the headless bass who didn't even do the heads-down boogie dance right.

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I have no idea but someone seems to want to go see them (xpost)

We were talking about SAHB yesterday in work and the man who started the conversation (by telling us he put some SAHB on his iPod) refused to believe Harvey was dead.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

"The Quo had a bit of a resurgence after Live Aid didn't they? Don't know why cos for me they were never the same once they drafted in that lanky pillock with the headless bass who didn't even do the heads-down boogie dance right."

It's tempting to ascribe Quo's loss off the plot to the departure in the early '80's of either (drummer) John Coughlan or (bassist) Alan Lancaster or both - but I think these were effect rather than cause and Quo had run out of ideas well before that.

In retrospect, if anythinmg the rot seems to have set in around the time they added keyboards to the line-up after Hello in 1973!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

when i was a kid i loved Status Quo too (mainly just 'In The Army Now').

They used to my favourite. I picked them off the first top 40 I had taped off the radio. Over and above the Jesus and Mary Chain and the Smiths. Just think, I could have been the coolest 8yr old int town...

Ben Dot (1977), Thursday, 2 December 2004 02:12 (twenty-one years ago)

You have to hear "Black veils of melancholy" then.

when i was in primary school our headmaster used to play status quo to us at the christmas party, as a treat like. we thought that was cool then.

weft (weft), Thursday, 2 December 2004 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

A former girlfriend of mine used to work at a mental health hospital.

When they had discos for the residents there, the two acts whose records used to get the largest number of people onto the dance floor were invariably and Chas & Dave and Status Quo

You can make of that what you will.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 2 December 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Snooker loopy, nuts are we,
Me and him and them and me,

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 2 December 2004 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I once somehow got roped-in to helping the ex-girlfriend and some of her colleagues accompany a small group of hospital residents to The Hexagon in Reading (Dr. C and Mark Grout will certainly know The Hexagon; strangely enough it is also the scene of some major league snooker tournaments....) to see Chas & Dave.

One of them became so excited during the performance that he began masturbating.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 2 December 2004 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

...we'll show you what we can do, with a load of balls and a snooker cue.

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 2 December 2004 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

One of them became so excited during the performance that he began masturbating.

Which one, Chas or Dave?

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 2 December 2004 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

"One of them became so excited during the performance that he began masturbating."

Lest there be any misunderstand here, I think I should make it clear that it was one of the hospital residents who began masturbating and not either Chas or Dave.

Well, not as far I could see anyway.

(x-post!)

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 2 December 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...

For years I thought the Quo were shite.

And then the other day, I heard "Rockin' All Over The World" come on the radio, and I thought it was rather magnificent.

It just had the sort of simple idiot joy that you never hear in music nowadays, in which pleasure is always connected with the avaricious pursuit of (wait for it.....) status!
