Surprised I've not seen this mentioned here.

I eventually picked it up after hearing good things, I guess I expected good but not outstanding house, but I am extremely impressed with it.

It's really clicky but also has a nice deep house feeling running through it. Very facelessly segued, the tracks kind of blend into one which I guess is a plus or a minus depending on your perspective.

What do others think? I was driving with it on today and it blew me away, so many sounds fitting together.

it's great! i mentioned it on one of the fabric threads i think. lots of cool tricks...

it's tricky (disco stu), Sunday, 16 January 2005 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

it's easily the best Poker Flat related mix I've heard.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 16 January 2005 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Steve Bug is playing down here at Audio in Brighton on Fri Feb 4th if anyone is interested. Should be good.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Sunday, 16 January 2005 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

you must let us know how that goes, there's been talk of getting him over here to play.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 16 January 2005 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I've got a couple of live mixes shared on Soulseek (username, surprisngly enough, Chewshabadoo) if anyone is interested.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Sunday, 16 January 2005 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah agreed, i think he's really underrated. and he was one of the first (to my knowledge) to really bring the whole sophisticated tweaked minimal aesthetic (pre-electro-house) to the original house template. instead of treating it as some holier-than-thou thing one worships, he took the best bits and rocked it. it's a pretty risky thing to do because it's oh so easy to criticize as being regressive

it's tricky (disco stu), Sunday, 16 January 2005 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw him play a couple of years ago and it was excellent, he really has an individual style (in his mixing and track selection). Bugnology was a bit of a letdown for me compared to that night. Dunno, it doesn't grab me (I was listening to that Black Strobe essential mix a lot around that time, so maybe that's unfair competition, right?)

Omar (Omar), Sunday, 16 January 2005 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

They're very different, I don't know if it's a car specific thing, but I did think Bugnology sounded amazing in the solitary confinement of a vehicle!

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 16 January 2005 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know if it's a car specific thing

These thing happen. I only can listen to Plaids Trainer while riding a bike, it's the only way it really makes sense.

Meanwhile Ronan, get thee to ye'olde Electro-House classics in 2004 thread, maybe you can help me with a track ID. :)

Omar (Omar), Sunday, 16 January 2005 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

argh chewshabadoo i fearmy days of coming to kliks are at an end, seeing as im the other end of the country. its tempting though, hmmmmmm.

i wonder if hes playnig anywhere else...

ambrose (ambrose), Sunday, 16 January 2005 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

wait is this out? i cant find it on juno, the version on slsk that i found is sort of like a messed up one to make u buy the album. is it v old, or v new?

discogs hasnt heard of it, so i presume its notout yet, when can mere mortals like my self get it? the stuff i got off slsk was amazing, but there were 10 min blank pauses at the end of each track, so it was a bit irritating.

ambrose (ambrose), Sunday, 16 January 2005 23:38 (twenty-one years ago)

It's been released in Australia Ambrose, which means there's no way in hell it's not available in Europe.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 17 January 2005 08:47 (twenty-one years ago)

haha doesnt look like it released in the uk wtf?
amazon says its an import http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00064KZS2/qid%3D1105975621/202-0001310-6711867

why wouldnt it get released here? is this possible? i dont undertsand record distribution etc. maybe it didnt get released her becasue the artwork is so awful....

juno is the only other placei know that has a fairly comprehensive catalogue. boomkat has never heard of it.

ambrose (ambrose), Monday, 17 January 2005 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

ambrose, i've got an unmessed up version on slsk. username:pokerflat2002

i've listened to it a few times, but it has yet to grab me. maybe i'll try again. so far i much prefer the martin landsky-mixed pokerflat vol. 2

arjun (arjun), Monday, 17 January 2005 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

wow, thanks a lot arjun. i should check the vol 2 too.

one year passes...
Listening to Guido Schneider's "Dry As I Can" (not in this mix, but this is the closest thread to a Poker Flat thread) again today. What a great track. I don't think I liked it when I first heard it. Maybe I was annoyed that Guido seemed so serious and "minimal" after Glowing Glisses split. Now that minimal is everywhere this and stuff like his remix of B's "Minikool" make perfect sense.

Poor Poker Flat. Most labels would kill to be so "hit and miss".

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 3 April 2006 15:16 (twenty years ago)

Sammy Dee & Guido Schneider - Styleways

LOVE this track!

Half way through Bugnology 2 and it's the driest thing I've heard since DE9: Closer to the Edit (which I was listening to earlier).

None of the tracks are bad per se... but where Hawtin would chop it up or smear it a bit, Magda would bring out the choppiness even more, Sylvie Marks would throw some fragrant petals and actual house music around, other people might throw something a bit out of the expected in... this is like a bloody iTunes playlist! Brings new tedium to minimal midtempo 4/4.

His live sets can't possibly be like this.

Focus On: Guido Schneider

(didn't twig this was a mix at first. will have to listen tomorrow if it's still around)

Steve Bug - Bugnology 2

fandango (fandango), Friday, 26 May 2006 23:38 (twenty years ago)

Fandango I thought the same thing about the first Bugnology, and then I pulled it out recently and it sounded awesome. I think Bug's success as a DJ is totally situational - one of the reasons he works well live I think is that you can see him and how totally into the music he's playing, I found I got into the music really easily the night I saw him by focusing on his reactions.

The Focus On: Guido Schneider is sounding awesome. I really hope they do a Focus On: Trentemoller next.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 27 May 2006 06:53 (twenty years ago)

Of course Bugnology 2 has "Falling Up" and "Arquipelago" on it so I'm assuming it can't be all bad...

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 27 May 2006 06:54 (twenty years ago)

i really like bugnology 2 (i wasn't a fan of the first one).

Good Dog (Good Dog), Saturday, 27 May 2006 06:57 (twenty years ago)

no surprises here, but i like bugnology 2, too. it is different than the first one in that it is more immediate/less cerebral. it's minimaximal.

breakfast pants (disco stu), Saturday, 27 May 2006 15:39 (twenty years ago)

*crosses fingers for a "Focus on Trentemoller" cd*

Telephonething (Telephonething), Saturday, 27 May 2006 18:07 (twenty years ago)

I love the Jay Hunsberger track on "Bugnology 2". Great snares.

Jacob (Jacob), Monday, 29 May 2006 03:15 (twenty years ago)

yeah, me too. 'Move On'. nice vocal effects, too. I heard one other track Hunsburger did with Mike Shannon which is a bit more down and sleazy 'Cold Calling'. I wonder if there are any others?

Good Dog (Good Dog), Monday, 29 May 2006 03:26 (twenty years ago)

Regarding this Guido Schneider thing: are these the new tracks Sherburne mentioned in one of his recent Pitchfork articles?

jeffery (jeffery), Monday, 29 May 2006 03:34 (twenty years ago)

And does anyone else when reading his name always think it to the tune of Bowie's "V-2 Schneider" or am I incurably deranged?

Telephonething (Telephonething), Monday, 29 May 2006 05:06 (twenty years ago)

oh no. now I'm infected with your earworm.
