This should be an exciting show, as according to critic/scenester/musician Joey Sweeney, we are now officially part of some sort of scene hegemony (unbeknownst to us and most other Philadelphians)

From Philebrity.com:

"Suddenly, everybody is all abuzz about The Spinto Band, the mythical basement group of longhairs that is promising to topple the whole Dr. Dog/Capitol Years/Teeth/National Eye/Buried Beds/American Altitude/Like Moving Insects scene. (BTW, these boys need to come up with a snappy name so it doesn’t take forever when you invoke their whole milieu. Something like Nelly’s St. Lunatics or, like, the Flipmode Squad. Something like that. Maybe the Friends of Beard.)"

Sorry, that's at The North Star, 2639 Poplar St., 9pm, $7, thanks.

Like Moving Insects are great.

Also, assuming it's the same Birdie (from FL), they're a friend of a friend's band and are pretty good as well.

They are great. They are good friends of mine and we share a musician (our steel player/guitarist is their bassist).

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 17 January 2005 07:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Really? Damn, hope you guys play Joe's at some point, since I'm stuck there every fucking weekend and never get out...

cdwill, Monday, 17 January 2005 07:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I don't think it's the same Birdie. I'm pretty sure that's a solo act from Philly.

We actually did play Joe's not too long ago, but I think you weren't there that weekend.

Actually, Like Moving Insects, American Altitude, Fan of Friends and Capitol Years can all basically be traced back to the same circle of people in New Brunswick, NJ. Capitol Years' guitarist used to be our steel player, our bass player was in the first incarnation of Like Moving Insects, our lead singer/guitarist was in a band called Wahoo Moment that included members of LMI, our bassist is in Fan of Friends with Josh from LMI (and in War on Drugs with the drummer from Capitol Years).

Yeah, I think I had law school finals to study for. I remember hearing that that night went well in general, though, from the staff and regulars.

The other Birdie is a full band- totally different.

Now I'm gonna have to track down the contingent of bands you've mentioned...

The others, unfortunately, do not have web sites that I know of.

haha State College has been down with the Spinto Band for a year and plus! Ahead of the mfin' curve, we be.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 17 January 2005 08:32 (twenty-one years ago)

And they're playing with National Eye here on Friday! DRAMA.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 17 January 2005 08:34 (twenty-one years ago)

btw Philebrity needs to eat a dick and die. what the fuck is that fellow's problem?

miccio (miccio), Monday, 17 January 2005 08:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Some sort of toppling will no doubt ensue.

Re: Philebrity, I'd say the fellow's problem is that he really wants his own band to be the one to topple.

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 17 January 2005 08:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry, I worded that awkwardly -- I mean he wants his band to be the one on top.

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 17 January 2005 08:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Apparently the guy also posted something on some other board complaining that "the same show happens every weekend".

So should all of these bands just stop playing shows so as to avoid annoying him? It's called a local music scene.

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 17 January 2005 08:50 (twenty-one years ago)

This is what I just posted at ILE:

I think what he might mean, or at least how I interpret it (from a booking standpoint) is that all of those bands have very loyal crowds (and lots of mutual friends) who come out to see them. There's a definite "scene", but in a good way.

Sara Sherr, Monday, 17 January 2005 08:52 (twenty-one years ago)

id say the AA / National Eye / Teeth / etc crowds are probably one of the few, if not only, really positive and supportive group of folks in this city's music scene.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 17 January 2005 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Which is why, even though I know he probably didn't mean it too seriously, I find his comments a bit annoying -- why snipe at people for trying to create a real local scene?

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 17 January 2005 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

because thats philadelphia. thats what i HATE about this city -- how everyone cuts everyone else down. i know this behavior exists elsewhere, but man, its bad here.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 17 January 2005 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Just reviving as a reminder.
