Damn - I missed Billie Whitelaw and Denholm Elliott in Dennis Potter's Follow The Yellow Brick Road last night. Son Of Man on next week.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 17 January 2005 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

'searching for the wrong eyed jesus' was on last night. it was really good, the cinematography was beautiful. since it's a bbc arena production i guess it'll be repeated sometime

jellybean (jellybean), Monday, 17 January 2005 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

And that's why we need this thread.

..today

More Potter plays for a few Sundays yet, too, I gather.

A British jazz night of sorts next Friday, though I wouldn't know quite how good that'll likely be, personally.

I thought the Stan Tracey one last year was an effective overview for someone like myself; certainly made me rush off and get "Under Milk Wood", for starters. Interesting part about his interpolations with free jazz, also... The Vivian Stanshall and John Martyn ones were wonderful, I found.

Documentaries they should do on British 'Originals':

Kevin Coyne, Kevin Ayers, Peter Hammill, Roy Harper, Lawrence Hayward, Robyn Hitchcock, Dan Treacy, Paddy McAloon... Alan Price, perhaps?

30 minutes for the story of Britpop? Not that I'm interested or anything.

I am utterly and abjectly pissed off with this little lot (Tom D.), Friday, 11 June 2010 11:13 (sixteen years ago)

Likely to skim over Menswear's contribution then.

It's also worth mentioning here that if you don't live in the UK or have iPlayer and want to watch these shows it is often possible to torrent them on thebox dot bz.

fuck all this blur shit there's a performance of la boheme at 19:30

henri grenouille (Frogman Henry), Friday, 11 June 2010 12:32 (sixteen years ago)

No Distance Left To Run is very good, but do you sense that you're getting the Authorised Version of events, and it would have ended better at the Glastonbury reunion show. I liked the scene with the nervous rookie interviewer, and his big theory (whatever it was).

Mark G, Friday, 6 May 2011 13:27 (fifteen years ago)

Seven Ages of Rock is the worst music documentary ever made. It's an object lesson in how to write a bogus narrative where black people and women barely exist. The Britpop one was dire. Smiths to Stone Roses to Oasis and Blur to Libertines ran the narrative. Proper music. Yeah.

Count Palmiro Vicarion (Stew), Friday, 6 May 2011 17:38 (fifteen years ago)

yeah it was terrible.

yay! at that Classic Albums though. for years in the 90s i used to think 'God why is it always Phil Collins and Pink Floyd on these kinds of shows, why can't it be Screamadelica or something modern?'.
another decade on and there it is.

piscesx, Friday, 6 May 2011 17:43 (fifteen years ago)

Seven Ages of Rock - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Seven Ages of Rock was a BBC Two series, co-produced by BBC Worldwide and VH1 Classic in 2007 about the history of rock music

the high-water mark of landfill

eid orb (nakhchivan), Friday, 6 May 2011 17:44 (fifteen years ago)

Hah, yes, it seemed designed to justify landfill indie didn't it? I remember the summing up at the end was something about how today's bands respect the past and unite the generations through their classic British pop and rock stylings. Argh!
The American alternative rock one was awful too. "One of the best kept secrets in rock... The Pixies!" Lordy.

BBC4's music coverage used to be really interesting - all those great documentaries about rock mavericks like Robert Wyatt, Viv Stanshall etc. The Reggae/Folk/etc Britannia series is good, tbf, but it can seem a bit tokenistic. "Ok, that's our reggae night, back to classic rock next week."

Count Palmiro Vicarion (Stew), Friday, 6 May 2011 17:52 (fifteen years ago)

God why have they got these awful 20 year-old albums on these kinds of shows, why can't it be something modern?

bell hops (Noodle Vague), Friday, 6 May 2011 18:00 (fifteen years ago)

The 'indie' doc is on now, it's not saying anything I don't know, but it *is* playing it like 'we won the war and this is how", but hey.

Still, the one-hour "best of those days" might be OK

Mark G, Friday, 6 May 2011 22:48 (fifteen years ago)

John Harris is even more horrible when you see him talking

bell hops (Noodle Vague), Friday, 6 May 2011 23:13 (fifteen years ago)

As opposed to what, his writing, etc?

Mark G, Friday, 6 May 2011 23:27 (fifteen years ago)

Classic Albums
Movin' on Up: Pop Hits from 1991
Seven Ages of Rock

If for some reason you missed all this shit the last two times it was on, it's being repeated again this evening. Meanwhile on BBC3, back-to-back episodes of Family Guy. All day.

got a whole lotta gloves (snoball), Sunday, 8 May 2011 07:35 (fifteen years ago)

had lots of twitter fun in the 'Pop Hits from 1991' hour, culminating in prompting a cbeebies presenter to tweet at jimbob from carter (and potty-mouth comedian friend)

Loved the Weatherall quote ' I went from listening to "Hamburger Lady" by Throbbing Gristle to dancing to "Josephine" by Chris Rea...that's how dangerous (a drug) E is..."

sonnyboy, Sunday, 8 May 2011 08:48 (fifteen years ago)

I think the broadcast engineers at The Late Show must have all been on little fellers too, the sound for that Primal Scream clip was eye poppingly bad.

the crap gig in the sky (MaresNest), Sunday, 8 May 2011 10:16 (fifteen years ago)

I think the Late Show were notorious for bad sound...The Stone Roses debacle("Fuckin Amateurs!!")...and I remember seeing Jeff Buckley on it and thinking this was a weird deconstruction of the norms of audio mixing...

sonnyboy, Sunday, 8 May 2011 10:42 (fifteen years ago)

The "Pop Hits" 1991 was alright, good to see "Feel every beat" for example....

Although why Vic Reeves, I don't quite follow.

The new Nordic Noir thing starting on BBC4 this saturday is Trom, which is a prequel to Tron, i think.

(did we have a scandi tv thread? because then i'd also add that More4 is currently showing Rig 45 on friday nights too)

koogs, Friday, 8 July 2022 11:03 (three years ago)

oddly, Synth Britannia, which ties in with PF's previous post, gets a repeat tonight too.

Boys From The Blackstuff was on earlier in the week, so see iplayer i guess.
