i haven't heard it in forever... but in my memory it sounds like a gated drum with deep reverb and a short decay... could be totally off... time to start looking for an mp3...

I would like to know this as well.

i'm fairly certain it's not a drum machine... just sounds like a sampled drum... probably a factory default snare... wet reverb, deep, low decay, some simple gate... probably programmed at 1/32 and variations in the velocity. possibly even just a small amount of chorus, though that could be the low quality of the mp3. there is a sound which could possibly be an 808 throughout, though again with enough reverb on it that you could get the same sound from any tinny staccato sound with the right filters... you can get that hihat sound with an 808, as well as the bass drum (though that sounds like wet factory cheesey default too)... hope that helps. if you need me to clarify how you would do go about imitating it, lemme know and i'll try it out.

to me it sounds like generic late 80s breakbeat*, i blame archaic sample/loop technology.

*haven't heard it "properly" in at least a decade, only during San Andreas.

im thinking it may be from a Akai Mpc60 drum machine with the snare sampled throw a high echo and a delay.

"Blame" is not the term I'd use! Do you not love the "da-dadada- Bloaw"???

especially up against the other jam lewis hits

The problem I have with most New Jack is the stiff, riki-tiki 32nd note feel that's supposed to "swing". It works pretty well in this drum intro though, maybe because the beat that comes in has a little better feel (or maybe because that girl is POIIISSSSOOOOONNNNNN!).
