ILM's Sudden turn into the best place to look for new leaked music... C or D?

The new MIA and Beck were available here first, a half-step before the musicblogs either got the material or before the sites that had the songs blew up.

Kept on the DL, this could be an astonishing resource... or, as was suggested before, "the human face of piracy".

Is this part of what ILM is meant to be and is it a reasonable direction for ILM to be taking? Not that _I'M_ complaining mind you...

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

is this really a new thing? it's fine anyway as ILM is merely the messenger one must not shoot

Stevem On X (blueski), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I've not been lurking longer than seven months, so I'm not sure if this is a new thing or not...

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

i mean, everyone was excited about the MIA. it was sort of inevitable that we'd come here to talk, plan, etc. the beck thing sort of just popped up. and didnt it pop up from a musicblog that mike o referred us all to?

anyway, sure - its a great resource that has always been in place. i wouldnt fret for the cheapening of ILM discussion, though.

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

i've been poking around here for about a year now and new or not, yesterday when the beck album leaked (coming on the heels of Arular) was a new revelation -- like when i first began using napster or discovered slsk. the distribution of information here can best be described as astonishingly viral. maybe it's passe to many here by now, but i for one am still blown away by it.

it makes me wonder how much longer labels, publicists, and publications will bother to keep the facade of building buzz via traditional channels. as we saw recently with political blogs, though, these same folks can and will infiltrate any outlet with cash outlays to co-opt the message. fascinating stuff.

john'n'chicago, Tuesday, 18 January 2005 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Chuck said he'd had a promo of MIA's album for a month, so it's not *that* speedy...

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

i mean, it still seems quasi-reasonable right now to maintain SOME level of traditional hype, if only to make the really effective leaking/blog/messageboard hype seem cooler or more subversive, and thus possibly more effective. i guess you could say this is sort of paranoid, but i dont feel threatened by any of the marketing stuff. in fact, i think its all sort of brilliant.

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

the Kish Kash thread from 03 = someone posts the press release, 100 posts later a few people reveal they have the promo, 100 posts later the mp3s leak

Stevem On X (blueski), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Chuck said he'd had a promo of MIA's album for a month, so it's not *that* speedy...

sure. but he's the editor of the village voice music section and i'm a programmer in chicago. at the very least, it seems to me like the lead time for access to releases is extending. as this becomes more prevalent, the story will have been written long before magazines hit the streets.

john'n'chicago, Tuesday, 18 January 2005 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

The beck one was the first I 'got' since being here. There was a "strokes" one but it had gone by the time I got home...

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a bit sad the way the actual release of the LCD Soundsystem album has been and gone without the thread even being revived. But not that sad.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmm... ILM differs in that there's about 10k words of discussion about the leaks, so yr not buying blind. Okay, you're not buying at all but you know what I mean.

mei (mei), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

It also occurs to me that it could be the ruin of ILM if it gets known as the place to get leaked new releases.

I was already getting a bit fed up of so many threads being filled up with "Hey can anyone gmail me that track?" and "Me too - sorry!"s, which is why I set up The thread for gmail offers and requests. I thought that was working quite well, in concert with the equivalent for slsk requests. But everyone seemed to ignore it for the MIA one, which made that thread less of a 'let's anticipate the MIA album' and more of a feeding frenzy.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry - grumpy today.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a bit sad the way the actual release of the LCD Soundsystem album has been and gone without the thread even being revived. But not that sad.
not yet! it's not released here till next week. we can revive it just in time

jellybean (jellybean), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha - the fact that I didn't even know when it was released proves my point. I was going by its having been reviewed in the Guardian the Friday before last. But this is a distinct issue for other ILM threads, I suppose.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

i totally agree with you, alba (even though i was totally one of the more egregious beggars) - but again, i really think the MIA is a bit of an anomaly.

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

the funny thing about the mia thread was that nobody actually offered to send anyone the tracks on mp3! the gmail addresses kind of came out of nowhere.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

LCD album is not coming out until next week...

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

M.I.A. was available at ILM first? Look at the folder name you probably downloaded it from. It has -XXL at the end. That's a group. Where exactly do you think they put it first? On ILM? Sorry, all those advances were available all over the internet long before ILM. There's a whole world of stuff out there you aren't too informed about.

Mickey (modestmickey), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha - good.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

(maybe people are just deluded because slsk isn't as good as they think it is)

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I looked a few times at the ex-Pitchfork boards back when ILX was down, and it was sort of depressing how any "discussion" thread about new music took on the format of one person asking "what do you think" and the next person replying "yousendit please" and then a link being provided and the thread concluding without any actual commentary. The fact that gmail and yousendit make it possible to easily shoot along material like this makes it difficult not to ask, sure, but I'd hate to see that fact actually diminishing the discussion that the whole "buzz" thing is theoretically meant to consist of.

Mind you, if I hadn't gotten the M.I.A. from elsewhere I would have been all over that thread begging with the rest of them.

nabiscothingy, Tuesday, 18 January 2005 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

B-but... The thread for gmail offers and requests

Maybe I'll start another one and broaden it to yousendit. The title was kind of confusing anyway.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

that's the downside but otoh the ying yang twins wz an ok discussion on an mp3 that people could d/l. also liked vahid's thread on proto-microhouse where he posted mp3s to back up his argument. x-post

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

LCD isn't out until Feb. 15 in the U.S., I believe!

Douglas (Douglas), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't see the harm in posting mp3s or yousendit links where relevant at all. It's the requests for them that's a pain.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Alba, I kept seeing more posts added to The thread for gmail offers and requests and, without clicking on it, thinking "Jesus christ, I can't believe so many people don't have Gmail invitations yet!"

Mickey (modestmickey), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I realise now that it's a badly-named thread. I'll start another.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I think part of what made the ying yang more interesting was that it was discussion of a SONG.
Talking about a whole album takes time.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmmm, NOW I remember where I know that "modestmickey" character from... over here at Monkeyfilter.

I also recall a chunk of that thread that's since been edited out by admins about how when I found myself sharing a cell with a rapist for my sins as a file-sharer, perhaps I'd think twice about my chutzpah.

How's trolling working out for you?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 00:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Forkslovetofu, you know, I was planning on not being snarky and starting an argument since this place is so civil, but I did want to bring that up. Here's what I was going to say. If I understood your argument back on MoFi correctly, you were arguing against me in saying that MP3 blogs were legal because of fair use, with the songs being used for reviews. That made me somewhat surprised to read your comment in the thread about a UK blog being shot done being "not surprising." If I misunderstood you, my apologies, I really don't want to go back and revisit that argument we had.

Anyway, I never answered your questions about my own involvement in the issue. At the time I wasn't prepared for it. Now, I guess I will. Back in May the FBI raided my home. Why? Solely on the basis of MP3's. Nothing more. I won't outline the exact details of my case, simply because I don't want to, but I will tell you this: I don't want anybody else to go through what I have been. I hired the worst possible lawyer ever for five thousand dollars who does his job poorly I'm considering lodging an ethical complaint against him. The past eight months have been a Kafka-esque nightmare. It really has. You can't even imagine it. In the near future I will be going to court. It is very likely that I will have prison time as part of my sentence. I wouldn't be the first.

You don't have to believe me about this, that's perfectly acceptable. Anyway, two comments:

There is a whole level of online music piracy that you (and please, do not take this as an insult) are completely clueless to. ILM is not the highest echelon of it, and neither are MP3 blogs. Almost all these leaked releases you salivate over originate from those higher levels. Maybe other posters on ILM know about this. I wouldn't be surprised if some of them are a part of it, seeing as how many professional journalists post on ILM. Perhaps none of them are though. What I am sure though is, there are others like you who think they know the highest echelons but have no idea as to what lays outside their eyesight.

Last point. MP3 blogs are illegal. Yes, even yours. I'm sorry, but the argument you waged against me on MoFi is simply not true. I don't say this as an attack against you, but merely to inform you. It is likely that the FBI will never give two shits about you. You may be running your blog from a retirement home some day. It is also possible that you will go through what I have been the past eight months. It's not fun returning to your home to find a squad of FBI agents digging through every inch of your personal space, showing them logs of your online conversation, suddenly realizing that everything you've said in the past months has been monitored. Can they do this to you? Yes. Yes, they can. Will they? Probably not.

Lastly, don't think I'm involved in something I'm not telling you. No credit card fraud, child pornography, hacking, etc; no sir. Absolutely none of it. I've been going through hell the past eight months solely because of two things: MP3's and the internet.

Take from this what you will.

Mickey (modestmickey), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 00:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Man. When I get emotional, my grammar turns awful. Sorry.

Mickey (modestmickey), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 00:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Showing you logs of your past conversations. They showed me. Not vice versa.

Mickey (modestmickey), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Genuinely sorry to hear you're having problems with the law.
Please do not patronize me and/or fling shit in my direction.
Thanks in advance.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 00:42 (twenty-one years ago)

One more thought. The guy who ran that UK blog is lucky. He got a first strike. A friendly warning to take down his MP3's and everything is okay. Not everyone is so lucky. I'm one of them. It seems I've had poor luck my whole life, and what's been happening to me since May definitely cemented it in my mind. I had no first strike.

Lastly, I did get worked up in the original MoFi thread. I admit it. But please, try to place yourself in my shoes. Can you imagine how maddening it is to have a handful of people claiming that what you've been going through is impossible? It doesn't happen in real life! That never happens! You have it all wrong! No, I really don't. I'm not a paranoid schizophrenic. I did get worked up, but is it necessary to call me a troll? The first post was hardly trolling, and definitely nothing I've posted here is of that nature.

Mickey (modestmickey), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 00:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, I'm entirely sorry I brought it up.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 00:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Mickey, what exactly where you doing? Hosting mp3 files?

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 00:54 (twenty-one years ago)

(and when I say "hosting" I mean via http)

ILM is not, and never will be, a good source for new leaked music. There have been a few links to other sites posted here, and threads where people exchange contact information for the purposes of sharing music have been largely ignored by moderators. This kind of activity is not endorsed on these boards.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 00:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Andrew, no, I didn't host any files myself. I hope you don't mind, but I really don't want to discuss exactly what I was doing. Especially since I haven't yet gone to court, I think it would be a particularly bad idea. Although I have alluded to myself somehow being involved in something MP3/law related, such as in the MoFi post Forkslovetofu wants to use to embarrass me, this is the first time I've actually told as much detail as I have on a public forum. Seeing people discuss the legal aspects of music piracy who have no idea what actually occurs, as I have been witnessing from my unique vantage point, and staying silent the whole time is particularly maddening. I really don't want to say any more, though.

Mickey (modestmickey), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I will say though, that what I was doing is nothing any different from what the majority of ILM posters do.

I didn't run a major bootlegging operation out of Singapore, sell burnt CD's in China Town, etc. Absolutely nothing out of the "ordinary."

Mickey (modestmickey), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 01:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm still curious as to what it was you did, exactly. (As I myself might be in a precarious situation.) If you want to send me an email, you can rest assured it'll stay in strict confidence and won't be intercepted. (I run my own mail server, and it's secure.)

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 01:33 (twenty-one years ago)

This thread has my heart racing all Squarepusher and shit.
