Both these excerpts are from today's PFM content.

Banhart:
7. Speaking of the Circle Expands, the amazing amazing amazing amazing band from north Hampton called FEATHERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

8. of Course, Jandek playing (he looked a little like Paul Newman from the picture i saw! wild!)

Sam Ubl:
Like a concert hall built atop a subway line, the album quakes with a faint but omnipresent tremor of sadness, tempering Embrace's heavenward stomp with a melancholic gegenschein.

A melancholic gegenschein? Who else is with me in wishing Devendra Banhart wrote all the reviews?

Mickey (modestmickey), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

FEATHERS!!!!!!!!!

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

that would be awesome

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Pitchfork totally ripped Dusted's Listed feature.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

If Banhart just wrote all the reviews, imagine the clarity and sensibility of it all! There's all this talk about how PFM will "make it big." Using phrases like "melancholic gegenschein" to describe music is definitely not the way to do it, but of course, I'm no expert. If PFM wants to connect with a wider audience, they need Banhart!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FEATHERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mickey (modestmickey), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Seems like Pfork is scrambling to make sure that Daily Feature actually has daily content. Any daily content.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

8.1 = !!!!!!!!.

Beta (abeta), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

These music writers must feel superior somehow, hence the melancholic gegenschein. Guys like Devendra who aren't dying to feel superior (ie, people already pay to listen to his music) probably don't need to gravitate to pitchforkmedia.com. Case closed?

roland barthes, Tuesday, 18 January 2005 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I once told Sterling that you couldn't connect to wide audiences talking about Gramsci, but everyone disagreed. So maybe Ubl is on the right track?

nabiscothingy, Tuesday, 18 January 2005 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Pere Ubl?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

you know, I actually have heard really good things about that band Feathers. They're playing here in a couple of weeks, and I'm definitely going to go.

Ian John50n (orion), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Using multiple !!!!!!!!!!!!!! is a good thing in my book.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

That's so dumb!!!

nabiscothingy, Tuesday, 18 January 2005 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Clearly there is a schema derived from humoral medicine at work here. If Ubl's saturnine contemplation goes to bat for the melancholic temperament, Devendra's exclamation points counter this with a lusty and sanguine vigor. Such a balance (or akrasia if you prefer the Greek) is in fact the epitome of health.

Galen (Drew Daniel), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah man. earnest enthusiasm about music is totally infectious. andrew wk and devendra banhart should write reviews together.

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

i interviewed DB once. i was intrigued to see how'd come accross in person, very nice guy, but it all seemed a bit , off, false to me....maybe I'm just a cold mean bitch

owen reading, Tuesday, 18 January 2005 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

i see devendra in the record store sometimes.

Ian John50n (orion), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

what does he like to buy? i think he said he liked r kelly in spin or something.

artdamages (artdamages), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

he's always got big stacks of stuff and i am never in a position to check out what it is inconspicuously, so i don't really look.

Ian John50n (orion), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Galen that is an Excellent point!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mickey (modestmickey), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Where do you spot Devendra? I (think) I saw Thurston Moore at my record store recently, but I didn't want to go, "WHOOAA! DUDE-- tell me what to buy!"

poortheatre (poortheatre), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

usama bin laden?

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahaha Sam Ubl is actually a real-life friend and nice guy, but you're right-on in picking out the pretension and pseudo-intellectualism. I really don't mind look-what-I-can-do music writing (PFM's best days were Brent DeC. and Matt LeMay's gonzo concept reviews) but Ubl sometimes makes music seem downright unfun.

He's quite enthusiastic and interesting in person but the dude needs to get out more.

soultron, Wednesday, 19 January 2005 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

all of those reviewers need to get out more. so serious. and their reviews are just way too harsh and have too much power. here we are talking about them afterall, noone is discussing reviewers at junkmedia.org!

owen reading, Wednesday, 19 January 2005 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Pitchfork backlash is so 2001. ;)

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 00:29 (twenty-one years ago)

noizem duke (noize duke), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Not only that, Gygax, but Banhart totally ripped off Dusted (see forthcoming Feathers feature).

Sam Hunt (robosam), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 01:05 (twenty-one years ago)

this thread has become muy caliente! nevertheless, can anyone cover my shift when feathers play the khyber? kthx

blackmail.is.my.life (blackmail.is.my.life), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 01:17 (twenty-one years ago)

donut christ (donut), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 01:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I ain't too fond of the ATR CD I have, but I love that the lyrics in the insert are actually printed that way.
