Just trying to get it out there.

Link your tunes here too, and I'll tell you if I like yours.

Copy and paste link for it to work.

And could someone please fix the typo on the thread title?

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 23:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I'll get on that right away.

Major Sweet, Tuesday, 18 January 2005 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

C'mon Ehat, don't be mean!

I downloaded it last night, will listen tonight when I get back from t'pub.

wombatX (wombatX), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 04:43 (twenty-one years ago)

BUMP! for the UK massive.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 08:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Nice. I'm not a fan of that snare drum, and I thought a more 'rolling' deeper bass sound might have been nice. But I loved the vocal snippets and the melodies, which ended up reminding me of Orbital towards the end. I thought it was in danger of sounding a bit busy at one stage but it all seemed to resolve itself nicely!

wombatX (wombatX), Thursday, 20 January 2005 02:43 (twenty-one years ago)

What is the voice saying, is it "teutonic"? Love the bleepie stuff that comes in at 2:47.

Sum Of A pitch

Savin All My Love 4 u (Savin 4ll my (heart) 4u), Thursday, 20 January 2005 05:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I like this tune, although there were some pretty nasty tonal things going on early in the piece. It's pretty "epic". What did you use to write it?

A couple of miscellaneous stuff by me that went nowhere:

Something I worked on a few months ago: friday night.
And still earlier than that: Windows Startup Sound (Amen Edit)

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 20 January 2005 05:18 (twenty-one years ago)

On second listen, this track is fucking great!!

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 20 January 2005 05:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey thanks!

I used Cubase, some VSTs, and a couple of guitar pedals.

The snare drum is trying to emulate a big synth clap because I couldn't be bothered to find one to begin with (I was going to replace it later on) but then I grew to like it.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Thursday, 20 January 2005 07:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Liking it. Re: snare drum, gate the verb for that maximum 80's touch. Other than that theres a couple of times when the synth clips thats probably due to the envelope on it. Roll off the attack a touch in those places. The vocal cut-up bit is absolutely fantastic, mix it up, don't be shy! The synth that comes in shortly after doing the same tune seems loads louder in comparison.

Bernard the Butler (Lynskey), Thursday, 20 January 2005 08:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I like it, but there are parts near the end which I think are a bit busy, I don't produce though so I don't know what advice to give!

It's very Rex The Dog.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 20 January 2005 09:25 (twenty-one years ago)

It's very Rex The Dog.

Haha! BINGO!

I was trying for that kind of feel - although I've never been able to make anything with as upbeat a mood as Rex.

I hear you about the levels, I plan to mix it a bit better when I get some time, which should remove some of the busyness and smooth out levels etc. There isn't any compression on the output at the moment either.

Thanks for all the advice and - of course - keep the compliments coming!

It's not live yet, but I've put together a little website: http://www.sum0fapitch.com - check it out in about 24 hours, I'll add some more tracks possibly over the weekend (although they are all rather different to this one).

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Thursday, 20 January 2005 11:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, Rex the Dog. "Teutonic" makes me smile because the track sounds very English to me. It doesn't have the German oompa kick.

I like the high end especially but because it's so skittery, I'd prefer a glidier, deeper bass tone to offset it.

I think the drum sounds should be rethought. Tou're using a real kick, snare, crash but why not use synthetic things? Rex the Dog's tracks build a rhythm out of little synth stabs and such.

Well done though!

Good Dog, Thursday, 20 January 2005 11:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Its pretty nice, well I likes it anyway....hardly every single day tho. Still what is?

B+ with a goldstar

Kryptoshite, Thursday, 20 January 2005 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

LOL.

Took me a little while to realise what you meant Kryptoshite.

Here, try this

http://www.coastaltown.nildram.co.uk/porl/08%20Lynskey%20-%20Dear%20Old%20Mum.mp3

I was stuck for something to do with it and found Prince Charles' speech when the Queen Mum died.

Bernard the Butler (Lynskey), Thursday, 20 January 2005 13:10 (twenty-one years ago)

It sort of sounds like there's the Cubase metronome sound in there on quarter notes?

I know its not Christmas

why must we cut onions? (Lynskey), Thursday, 10 February 2005 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i have a few tracks up here if someone would like to hear... any comments would be appreciated... i chose this thread rather than the other one because i am not a band it's... well... i like electrohouse and kompakt... even though this stuff is really neither... it's a bit pop, it's a bit techy, it's a bit dancey, it's a bit hip hop, it's a bit (ick) idm and probably a bit amateurish... not usually all at the same time... stuff i like is luomo, superpitcher, micro-stuff, and prefuse... so maybe, hopefully (probably not), that comes out... please let me know what you think: http://www.jginvesting.com/fawnsongs/

firstworldman (firstworldman), Friday, 11 February 2005 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Good lord, firstworldman: “Skateboarder” is ace! I feel so rudimentary now. “Take Your Sleep” pretty great as well—I’m getting little Mylo flashes with from the lead around the one minute mark. “Busy at the end” = maybe that rimshot-sounding roll that cuts through hops out of the sonic profile a little too much? Plus the dual voice-and-synth solo bit, since the voice stutters where the synth doesn’t. I mention said things only because the track is otherwise so totally tight: I’m loving the synth and synth-voice sounds you’re getting here!

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 11 February 2005 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

("Take Your Sleep" obviously referring back to the thread-starter.)

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 11 February 2005 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks again, N! Though I insist, there is absolutely no need for you to be modest about your own music, you totally OWN that soul sample on the track that you sent me called Mr. Death... It's so punchy and great!

firstworldman (firstworldman), Friday, 11 February 2005 21:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha: "soul" in this case is an Illinois twee-pop band called Wolfie!

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 11 February 2005 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

well, whatever it is it worked : )

firstworldman (firstworldman), Friday, 11 February 2005 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

and you also never said whether it would be ok with you if i played that stuff out?

firstworldman (firstworldman), Friday, 11 February 2005 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

No problem at all! The Galang one in particular is, you know, for the world. And if you play "Mr Death" anywhere I might need pictures of people dancing to it. My only warning is that 90% of what I know about production has been learned from just messing around with Reason, and the sonic profile of the recordings can wind up weird and non-standard; I have no idea what would happen if you played these things on a room system. Hopefully there wouldn't be any bass blowouts or noises that bother dogs. But if you have the skillz or opportunity to check them out in advance or normalize them or whatever else, it might not be the worst idea.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 11 February 2005 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll definitely try them out first, thanks for the heads up... most of my knowledge came from reason too. i don't generate most of my sounds in reason anymore, but i still prefer to arrange them there.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Friday, 11 February 2005 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

What do you use for synths? Your synth sounds are a million times more interesting than anything I’ve ever managed; I can’t tell if it’s because you’re using better material or because I’m just lazy about getting good synth modules set up. Production-wise I was also impressed by (a) how neatly you’re getting sounds to work in their specific ranges (particularly getting rich, full drums where all sounds still confine themselves to a particular “space”)—and (b) the sense of motion you get in your tracks, which is less production and more just good work. That’s absolutely what I’m worst at with stuff. It’s partly because I actually program everything out in Reason patterns (don’t have a MIDI synth), so there’s a tendency to just let the loops repeat; I’ve been trying to actually get ambitious and be less lazy about that. But it’s also that my productions only hold together in a really tenuous way; whenever I introduce new sounds or shift things around, the sonic profile of the whole thing changes more than sounds right, and sometimes it all collapses.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 11 February 2005 22:33 (twenty-one years ago)

For synths I use mostly samples made from reaktor and put them in the sampler in reason and then run them through the malstrom as an effect to make them sound right. sometimes just plain old VSTs will do though, if it's after the fact. I can't play either, so most of the time, unless it's something very simple or something i can't have sound kind of mechanical, i will program it-- yes, it's tedious but it's totally worth it not to let things loop when possible. Also on a few of the tracks they're all just reason patches that i have tweaked. As for the drums, it's all about reverb and processing them through the malstrom... i would highly recommend keeping away from the drum samples that the disc comes with because they just aren't that great, save a few bass drums snares and hi-hats... i usually will just make sounds on synths in reason, process them in reaktor, import them into protools, cut them up and send them back to the redrum machine to program the patterns. the structural elements of the song, the motion, are kind of a difficult thing for me... because it's difficult, sometimes, for me to want to let things repeat... so i actually usually think that maybe there's a bit too much motion in a lot of the songs that i make. all this being said, i think you are underestimating what good use you make out of the sounds you've got and the ways you use them.

Hmmmm

Needs bass and a bit of extraneous noise. Bit of tightening too. Otherwise me happy.

It sounds Like a turbocharged Akufen - good stuff.

Thanks, people, for the compliments upthread about Take Your Sleep. I'm putting a new track up soon called 'Freakazone' which I'm really, really, happy with - at the moment you can get it off my Soulseek account (user: Chewshabadoo, I'm in the ILM room when online), but I'll get it uploaded onto webspace soon.
