i watched half of the first episode of the new season of American Idol, and i have to say im more than a bit jealous of someone who gets to be so honest/mean to so many terrible people. So im gonna say classic...

at least for the first few episodes every season

he really needs to stop telling people they're fat. also, none of his digs were funny tonight, and he let a lot of really terrible people through. mark mcgrath should permanently replace simon.

I caught my first five minutes of AI tonight in the locker room at the gym. First -- the whole thing is a scripted set-up, right? I mean, it has to be. William Hung and that blonde girl in the nightmarish white pants destroying Carole King can't happen by accident, right? Which makes Simon’s nastiness the cheapest possible trick played on a truly ignorant/hateful boob tube audience. Yuck.

And how the hell can Paula Abdul of all people have a relevant role in a talent search? Better question: the best this train wreck can give us is Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Stoddard, and Clay Aikens AND IT’S STILL ON?

that about covers it, i think. however the fact that the people he assures us with great confidence will become stars usually have a chart life of 4 and a half months before going back to singing with a karaoke machine in pubs gives the boob tube record buying audience the last laught, surely?

I think there is some merit to trying to snuff out someones hopes in an instant. Ifyou truly believe that the individual doesn't have a hope, and it is clear that they are delusional, cruelty may be nessisery to bring them down to earth. That said, i agee that he sould stick to voice/performance based criticisms, its not like someone is going to go 'oh really? I didn't know I was carrying a few extra pounds.'

The American Idol audition episodes give me a cheap, cynical thrill. I record people in a small studio, and have worked with singers who, uh, have some cherished illusions about their vocal abilities. There have been times where I'd have *loved* to pull a Simon Cowell and tell people EXACTLY what I thought of their singing. Sadly, one tends to lose repeat business by doing so.

Cowell was funny for like a season and a half, but it had no sustainability--he was too invested in maintaining cred. Now, Janice Dickerson--THERE'S a classic for you. Just hilariously hateful and crazy to boot. You can't be too mad at her once you've seen her strip down to a bikini and do push-ups. Which image I really wish I could wipe from my mind. Bmuh.

who is Janice Dickerson?

Cowell's opinions would carry more weight if he'd ever produced a decent record. At least in the UK we got Pete Waterman, who mostly knows what he's talking about. Even Paula Abdul's put out better records than Cowell's ever been involved with. SC's schtick involves shooting big fish in a tiny barrel, and he's got nothing with which to back up his smug bullshit.

Simon I think could let people down a little easier than he does. I saw the new American Idol the other night, and so many of the contestants left in tears. My opinion of this show would be much better if competitions were held before ever going on to American Idol. This way, only the best would get to stand in front of Simon... then what would he do? What could he do?

Yeah, but you know the vast majority of contestants would be met with a "Well, that was quite good but no way great or good enough, thanks bye" i.e. the ones you don't see. The truly terrible, for the judges, are a release from the full-scale monotony of the process. Which is why they don't filter them out.

Get the ex-members of Girl Thing to audition on Pop Idol. See where Cowell goes from there.

David Merryweather (DavidM), Thursday, 20 January 2005 11:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Janice is the Simon on America's Next Top Model.

Eppy (Eppy), Friday, 21 January 2005 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

The thing I don't understand about the show is why the contestants are never allowed to play an instrument on the show. Many of them can, but they are only allowed to sing.

Tabby played guitar without ever touching the strings! He combined REAL ROCK BY REAL MUSICIANS with ESP!
