This is the class description for "Electronic Music: History and Aesthetics of Popular Music Since the 1960s" at Harvard Extension School.

I found the syllabus very surreal, it's like it was compiled by people who read ILM. I mean, required readings from Simon Reynolds, Philip Sherburne, Jahsonic, Scott Plagenhoef, and Sasha Frere-Jones? Make sure you listen to Marshall Jefferson, Vybz Kartel, Dizzee Rascal, Madvillain, and Kylie? I love it.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

This is the guy that Reynolds was talking up on his blog a while back (apparently he studies Jamaica and soundsystem culture and he is THE Wayne Marshall.) Sounds like a great class (Harvard's getting as dipping as the worst liberal arts colleges isn't it haha) although I'm not sure what it would be like if you already had a pretty good handle on the subjects in question.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

He is not THE other Wayne Marshall however.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

...hm extension school...

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

seriously though it's awesome that he put together that syllabus and convinced the administrators that this was a class worth scheduling. it's a really good step. too bad there's so little potential reading material of value.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

"so little potential reading material of value"

What would you assign?

just saying, Wednesday, 19 January 2005 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno about the wisedom of assigning that Ikshur site, even with a caveat. It missed the mark more often than not the last time I looked. Mostly because it tries to codify and label music that resists just that.

Graeme (Graeme), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

"What would you assign?"

I think what he's saying is that there is unfortunately not a lot of good books written about some of these artists/genres not that there is anything particularly wrong with what was assigned (which frankly is in some cases just about all that exists.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

that ikshur site is horrible.

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

"What would you assign?"

that's my point! there's not much to choose from. it's evident in the syllabus--which i think is about as good as one can imagine--that there's a paucity of books or interesting articles on these subjects.

xpost... alex in sf is correct!

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I totally want to take this, but I actually don't think I have the $300.

mrjosh (mrjosh), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh man, I would take this class in a heartbeat.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

that collage on the top of the syllabus web page would give me second thoughts

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

You can "take" half the class by following the links in the syllabus, and then download the music selections.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

but you don't get his lectures, silly!

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh man that class sounds great...and ridiculously comprehensive.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

The collage is semi-lame, but on theo other hand he went to the trouble of making it and that syllabus, so he seems pretty committed, and the composition assignment looks great. Maybe I can get the graduate school (where I am) to fund me somehow.

mrjosh (mrjosh), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

"that's my point! there's not much to choose from. "

OK then. Although actually, I think there's quite a lot more you could assign. The problem is it's very scattered.

just saying, Wednesday, 19 January 2005 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Uhmm, 30% of the grade comes from projects you made in FL Studio. I could dominate that class.

David Allen (David Allen), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Assignments:

1. weekly online discussions – 40%

Expect a thread here soon. ;)

stevie nixed (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

That collage is awesome and you guys are just denying it.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

That collage looks like what most of the students around here create for the title page of the quarterly papers. (Don't get wrong, I'd probably do worse, but it's not making me think, "Wow, how brilliant!" either.)

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the stylus one is pretty great.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

this is awesome! i'm jealous i don't go to harvard!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 20 January 2005 02:38 (twenty-one years ago)

s1ocki keep in mind that "harvard" and "harvard extension" are different things!

geeta (geeta), Thursday, 20 January 2005 03:01 (twenty-one years ago)

but yes, cool class

geeta (geeta), Thursday, 20 January 2005 03:01 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, s1ocki you could totally take this course! i mean, if you moved to cambridge for a semester and stuff.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Thursday, 20 January 2005 03:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I Am seriously considering writing this guy and asking him if I can audit the class. Or, at the very least, why he picked Roygbiv" instead of "Turquoise Hexagon Sun".

The electronic music class for the undergrads is all about things like Cage and Adams. BOO HISS.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 January 2005 03:25 (twenty-one years ago)

anyone read his blog from when he was in jamaica? i'm a giant nerd and i just spent the past couple hours reading the whole damn thing. he was in JA at the same time i was...i so want to talk to him and his g-friend.

cybele (cybele), Thursday, 20 January 2005 03:26 (twenty-one years ago)

what's the deal with harvard extension? is it like a continuing education thing?

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 20 January 2005 04:07 (twenty-one years ago)

My Property professor at Brooklyn Law talked about mash-ups today so, well, everything is possible.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 20 January 2005 04:20 (twenty-one years ago)

has he covered "O.P.P." yet?

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 20 January 2005 04:24 (twenty-one years ago)

"Roygbiv" is brilliant.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 20 January 2005 04:40 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah who doesn't love roygbiv?

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 20 January 2005 04:43 (twenty-one years ago)

this looks cool but I'd probably have slightly different reading stuff (namely a couple things I've edited!)

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Thursday, 20 January 2005 05:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Or, at the very least, why he picked Roygbiv" instead of "Turquoise Hexagon Sun".

No shit!! Dan sometimes you say stuff that seems plucked straight from my brain and, quite frankly, it scares me a bit.

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 20 January 2005 05:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Roygbiv is great, but it lacks the depth of Turquoise Hexagon Sun, which I believe to be the best track the pair have ever done. (On occasion I've pronounced it to be "my favourite track of any kind by any artist ever!!")

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 20 January 2005 05:26 (twenty-one years ago)

what's the deal with harvard extension? is it like a continuing education thing?

-- s1ocki (slytus...), January 20th, 2005.

Bingo.

Matt Boch (Matt Boch), Thursday, 20 January 2005 08:21 (twenty-one years ago)

That reading list is one step away from 'microhouse thread on ILM' or 'Tom Ewing writing on bootlegs, Freakytrigger 2002'.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 20 January 2005 10:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Do they get CDRs handed out in every seminar or something?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 20 January 2005 10:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually dreamt I was on this last night! We all slept in a big dorm and went for poncey walks, it was awesome.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 20 January 2005 11:21 (twenty-one years ago)

SORRY I'M BUSY

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 20 January 2005 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay so Scott P totally needs to turn into a rapper so when people are hating on him he can be all like "fuck you dude THEY TEACH MY SHIT AT HARVARD" (except rhyming and stuff).

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 20 January 2005 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

What can I say? I've gone and touched off a debate, and all I wanted to do was share some sounds and theories with some Boston-area night-schoolers. At any rate, I appreciate the seriousness with which you all approach this subject, and I am grateful to those of you who are generous enough to see that there is value in what I'm doing. But you can't please everyone, knamean?

Here's a more elaborate explanation of what I'm up to:

Wayne

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 22 January 2005 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

that's a great course. I don't have any problem with any of the articles assigned from the Audio Culture book, which I really enjoyed.

and that Tom Dowd and the Language of Music DVD -- there should be a thread on that on ILM... best music documentary I've seen in months

(Jon L), Saturday, 22 January 2005 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

four months pass...
