Well, mostly Music For Robots, but Fluxblog and Nate Partin's Cool Out get some screen time. Traffic is already blowing up for Music For Robots, and I'm getting a lot of extra hits too.

You can see the MTV News feature here.

It's pretty nice, and the band of teenagers that they cover are pretty good, but good lord, Sway is an AWFUL voiceover guy.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Thursday, 20 January 2005 23:33 (twenty-one years ago)

hahahaha sway is hilarious. He alWAYS puts emphaSIS on the WRONG syllaBLES so it SOUNDS AWKward.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Thursday, 20 January 2005 23:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Nice report! I like the one guy's fuzzy head.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 January 2005 23:42 (twenty-one years ago)

That kid in the Hysterics, Oliver ignatius -- he's the son of one of our Senior Editors.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 20 January 2005 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

NEPOTISM.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 January 2005 23:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm curious how much traffic you guys are gonna see based on that. Your blog names are pretty visible.

I have to show my MOM that the NAME of my SITE is SEEN on a LINKS list for TWO seconds on MTV! That should buy me another few months of non-pestering about making money from writing.

THIS is COOL.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 20 January 2005 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha! I can't see the video from work: whose blogroll is being shown?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 20 January 2005 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

The top of Fluxs is visible. I'm watching it on a little web window so I assume its even more legible on TV.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 21 January 2005 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I really love the comments from TRL-watching teenage girls in Music For Robots' comments box in the new post about this MTV thing. It's really cute - they like the song and are all "oooh, he's cute, I'm 15 too and I'd like to meet him!"

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Friday, 21 January 2005 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Aren't ya glad you put your mug on the site now, Nate?

miccio (miccio), Friday, 21 January 2005 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

This kid is the new Ben Kweller just you wait. Except he'll evolve into a grunge solo artist.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 21 January 2005 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree, Matthew. Those new comments are just so precious. Why didn't I realize how fun it was to be a carefree teen when I actually was one?

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 21 January 2005 00:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I just realized they must have took these screen pics in like the last 24 hours.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 21 January 2005 00:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm pretty glad that I had an above-average mix of songs this week - it'd be nice to actually keep some of these MTV viewers interested. I think that M.I.A., Basement Jaxx, Au Revoir Simone, Mutronium, and Architecture In Helsinki would all have some appeal to some teenage girls.

Oliver Ignatius is a pretty catchy name.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Friday, 21 January 2005 00:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh wait, none of y'all link to me anyway: HATAZ.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 21 January 2005 00:07 (twenty-one years ago)

None of you have anything that sounds like the Garden State soundtrack come to life though. Nothing for Seth Cohen.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 21 January 2005 00:08 (twenty-one years ago)

"journey toward semi-fame"

miccio (miccio), Friday, 21 January 2005 00:09 (twenty-one years ago)

This is my favorite comment on MFR so far:

holy moley!! these guys are awesome. its really cool to see kids my age out there doin their thing, and actually getting noticed for it. i never watch MTV, but i was bored today so I did and man im glad! i dont really listen to this kind of music but i cant stop! XP i really hope to hear more from them and about them soon!! they cant be ignored!

I don't link to you, Jaymc? For real? I need to fix that.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Friday, 21 January 2005 00:10 (twenty-one years ago)

For real!

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 21 January 2005 00:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Seth Cohen would probably like that Charlotte Hatherley song that's still on the front page, and possibly the songs that Uncle Grambo posted in his fill-in.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Friday, 21 January 2005 00:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Why didn't Sway interview spiderman?
Papa needs new shoes.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 21 January 2005 00:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Matthew your blog was namedropped by some PR flak in the SF Bay Guardian this week as well - in an article about the "future of music"

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 21 January 2005 00:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Really? Could you send me a clipping or scan? I try to keep up with that stuff, and unless they contact me for interview, it's easy for me not to notice.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Friday, 21 January 2005 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

congrats you guys. you deserve the recognition. i saw flux in SPIN too.

"That me might find an audience – and critics – online, says Julianne Shepherd, a former Portland Mercury music editor who now works at Emusic, which provides content to iTunes, and the mistress of many a music writer's fave blog, Cowboyz'N'Poodles.

"The M.I.A./Diplo Funds Terrorism mix tape is a great example of a mix tape you can buy online – in the case of her and Dizzee Rascal, the Internet has been key in their popularity, almost forcing magazines to look at their coverage," she says. "Music listening is so much more global because of the Internet, so criticism has to be more global. Fluxblog and Catchdubs.com and MP3 blogs are really the way. Catchdubs is an editor at Fader, but his blog is really, really popular because he's a DJ and he really seeks out the hot new whatever – limited-edition sneakers, MP3s. "

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 21 January 2005 00:18 (twenty-one years ago)

"My mom said, I'll buy you a pair of turntables if you learn how to play a real instrument first," Charlie recalled. "I started playing [guitar] and my mom bought me a Jimi Hendrix CD. As soon as I turned it on, I fell in love with it. I never wanted the turntables after that."

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 21 January 2005 00:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I love Nick Catchdubs, but when has Catchdubs.com ever been an mp3 blog?

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 21 January 2005 00:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Magic City (ano ano), Friday, 21 January 2005 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Jaymc, now on the blogroll! (Seaworthy Southeast Thesaurus).

Thanks, Shakey! That's a very flattering quote from Julianne.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Friday, 21 January 2005 00:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks, Matthew. (djdee, it's http://jaymc.blogspot.com)

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 21 January 2005 00:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm still kinda surprised to see either of our names in print, to be honest...

that's not an actual kid posting, is it? that post has record company written all over it.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Friday, 21 January 2005 01:02 (twenty-one years ago)

who wrote that and where? that sounds bogus to me indeed. what band is "kat" so hyped on

owen reading, Friday, 21 January 2005 01:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Though MFR has a history of record companies spamming them, I don't think that one is fake. A lot of kids talk that way now - that kind of language is all over reality tv, etc. PR language has infiltrated pop culture in a big way.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Friday, 21 January 2005 01:14 (twenty-one years ago)

if an actual kid wrote that, i no longer feel good about this generation.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Friday, 21 January 2005 01:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno, seems like someone could have scrawled that somewhere in 1985 just as easily, if they were 15 and all.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 21 January 2005 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno, seems like someone could have scrawled that somewhere in 1985 just as easily, if they were 15 and all.

and now they're 35 and all and they're STILL WRITING THE EXACT SAME THING, and they're getting paid for it now.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Friday, 21 January 2005 01:25 (twenty-one years ago)

WE ARE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS, PEOPLE! WHITE IS BLACK! BLACK IS WHITE!

miccio (miccio), Friday, 21 January 2005 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Congrats Matthew!

So thats why my hit rate has been spiking like crazy, I figured you must have got a major name-drop. What's the damage: 10-20% traffic increase, or more?

Abby (abby mcdonald), Friday, 21 January 2005 02:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't get the video player to work. But being involved in something that gets even a tangential mention from MTV has me flipping out here.

On the other hand, my hits are still at a steady 130 a day. So... um.

(yr no prize yourself, Miccio)

I found that I could only view the video if I used my Explorer browser. I normally use Firefox, and it just would not cooperate.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Friday, 21 January 2005 02:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, man. This is ill. I ARE FAMOUS

Eppy (Eppy), Friday, 21 January 2005 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I have no video at work, so could someone try to answer some of the following questions:

1. Who are Music for Robots?
2. Who are the Hysterics?
3. Which one has 15 year olds in it?
4. Where does Alex in NYC work? For MTV?

David Allen (David Allen), Friday, 21 January 2005 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

4. Where does Alex in NYC work? For MTV?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 21 January 2005 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

4. Where does Alex in NYC work? For MTV?

No, but if anyone from MTV is reading this, please give him a job at your station and produce a reality TV show about it. I'd watch in an instant.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 21 January 2005 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Music For Robots = popular MP3 blog ran by a group of ten friends.

The Hysterics are a band of 15 year olds from Brooklyn. One of the Music For Robots guys works as a science teacher, and one of the kids in his band is one of his students.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Friday, 21 January 2005 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Of course all this information was READily available upthread...
