Dave Navarro's puttin' money in Lois Maffeo's pocket

In Dave Navarro's recent iTunes celebrity playlist, he includes a song by Courtney Love (the band) and says, "Nice to hear Courtney doing something different in this acoustic artsy jam". I don't think he knows that Courtney has nothing to do with that song (who's gonna tell him?). This song and another from a K comp. are currently listed as two of the most popular downloads for Courtney Love (the woman). That makes me smile to think that all these years later, Lois Maffeo is probably getting a nice little check every month from iTunes because people are mistakenly downloading her music instead of Courtney's. Not doing a cease and desist on Lois for using that name was the coolest thing that Courtney Love (the woman) ever did.

I wouldn't be surprised if Love tried, but can you successfully cease and desist a band for just using a first and last name for their band name? I think not. "Courtney" and "Love" aren't exactly very uncommon first and last names, respectively.

Besides, Lois dropped the moniker, and went by her her name soon after. How can you cease and desist something that's now no longer in print?

I don't really know how the iTunes system works - is Lois getting money out of this deal? And if so, can anyone give a ballpark figure as to how much she is bringing in from these two songs each month?

Well, the song chosen is from the Kill Rock Stars compilation, on the label of the same name of course, which Slim must have put on iTunes.

Courtney threatened legal action against Slim regarding that comp many many years ago, because there's a Nirvana song on the comp, and Slim splits the profits of the comp equally amongst all the artists. Courtney argued that people only bought the comp for the Nirvana song (this was post Kurt's death) and so wanted the royalties to weight FAR more heavily in Nirvana's favor than the other bands.. translation: she wanted more royalties, since she's a benefactor. I'm sure Nirvana/Kurt just wanted to help Slim out at the time the comp came out (1992) and contributed the song to the comp to help out the other bands, since Nirvana had just exploded in popularity.

But I think that Love lawsuit never came to be, or it was dismissed.

So, YEAH! If Slim is sticking to his word to this day, Lois WILL get royalties from sales from that Dave Navarro Mix! Although nothing substantial.

courtney the person would totally have a case against courtney the band. you can take pretty much any first and last name that you want, common or uncomon, for your own name, but when you try to take that name for your company or your band or any other such pursuit, that's a whole different story.

"Also, you should check out this song by this SUPER old guy who has been around since, like, before World War 1, Franz Ferdinand. Nice to see Franz making the transition from Archduking to hot dance-rawk."

"if he keeps it up, franz could have even more hits after being murdered than tupac did!"

Courtney did pursue the case and she did get Lois to cease and desist. That's why she dropped the moniker. I think it was just prior to the release of Pretty on the Inside.

Is Courtney Love even her real name, though? I thought it was changed.
