1) debut solo single from Ash girly

2) her voice is quite nice, the song is not bad for this sort of thing (this sort of thing being often quite bad in general ;) halfway through i started imagining Lauren laverne singing it and that was also nice.

3) the video is directed by Edgar 'Spaced, Shaun Of The Dead' Wright and stars David Walliams, Simon Pegg, Julia Davis and others and is predictably fabulous - watch it here: http://www.vitaminic.co.uk/vita/wmv/BASTARDOwindowsbband.wmv or at http://www.charlottehatherley.com/

4) She also has a song called 'Kim Wilde'. me being out of touch lately i had no idea about any of this tho you may well have.

1) No, 4) was.

This looks like a big push. Top ten?

not a chance

Video won't download for me for whatever reason. Strange.

works fine here

Well you're evil.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 21 January 2005 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

first single was playlouder.com's single of the year 2004! not heard a note of her stuff, but word is it's meh. happy to give it a pop, mind, and the video sounds like it'll chivvy it a long nicely.

The album is GREAT (if you like this sort of thing) (though I'm more partial to "Kim Wilde"). SF/J gave her a mention in some Gawker profile, which is where I first heard of all this.

I'm a fan. I still have "Kim Wilde" on my site if you want to hear it. Great 90s-style girl-fronted alt rock, perfect if you still have lingering sentimentality re: 120 Minutes.

They really need to put this album out in the US, I think that it could do reasonably well.

I've not heard anything from her but I do like Ash a lot. Do her songs sound Ash-ish? I appreciate Tim Wheeler basically writes them all but he might have rubbed off on her, so to speak.

Nick H (Nick H), Friday, 21 January 2005 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Her songs seem a lot more agile than Tim's - more changes, more bits, less direct verse-chorus-verse stuff. (Granted, the only Ash album I've heard is the one w/ "Burn Baby Burn".)

"Bastardo" is actually her third single. "Summer" came out a few months after "Kim Wilde".

Grey Will Fade is a good album...nothing really reaches the heights of "Kim Wilde" ("Bastardo" comes closest), but it's still a very fun cd. She's got a great voice.

'Kim Wilde' is great! Charlotte i loooooooooove yow...

Stevem On X (blueski), Monday, 24 January 2005 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

her stuff is really odd. it's got harmonies, hooks and lots of guitars. things that i normally really love, but i haven't been convinced by any of the singles so far.

jellybean (jellybean), Monday, 24 January 2005 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a song on the album called "Stop" which is really weird, it sounds like a cross between Royal Trux and the more rocking stuff by Bardo Pond. Most of the album is pretty straight clean power pop, and that jam comes out of nowhere right after the polished ballad.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Monday, 24 January 2005 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

'Kim Wilde' is magical. Nothing I haven't heard before, mostly, but it has a fucking way.

Captain GRRRios' Giggletits (Barima), Monday, 24 January 2005 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Yup, "Kim Wilde" is really stuck in my head these days. I'm afraid that the album would just be a great disappointment after such a high.

REVIVE DAMMIT

This album is fantastic!!! Would some stateside recording concern release this thing on the $9.99 tip already?

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 13 May 2005 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

and stars David Walliams

And there was me thinking music might be somewhere where I could get away from the god-awful shite that is Little Britain. :(

is the rest of this album as sickly catchy as this song ('bastardo')? also is this/has this gotten a US release yet?

swvl (vozick), Thursday, 15 December 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

I heard it might FINALLY get US distro next year. In the meantime, you can buy the CD for about $13US via CH's website.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 15 December 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

yeah word. itunes has it 4 cheap too. am i out of touch to think this stuff sounds like it would/could get major mtv play?

What happened to my "Charlotte quits Ash" thread?

StanM (StanM), Friday, 20 January 2006 19:43 (twenty years ago)

I got quite enamored of the song "Grey Will Fade" on some Mojo compilation. Very interesting take on powerpop, very cool changes. I have the album on order, should arrive today perhaps.

edd s hurt (ddduncan), Saturday, 21 January 2006 16:15 (twenty years ago)

After 9 years Ash and Charlotte Hatherley have mutually agreed to part company. The decision is completely amicable and they wish each other the very best for the future.
Ash are returning to the studio later this year to make the follow up to 2004's "Meltdown" album.
Charlotte is currently recording tracks for her second solo abum (following "Grey Will Fade") which she plans to release in the Autumn this year.

Press release on both sites. Bummer. I completely ignored this until Matthew put "Stop" on Fluxblog whenever it was.
