even though i've been doing for my site for 3 years, i still fell very young as a 'reviewer'. here is my review of the new L'altra album and i'd really appreciate your feedback on it. feel free to criticize, helpful tips are always welcomed.----------------------------------------------------

nothing?

deadair (deadair), Monday, 24 January 2005 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm no critic myself, but it seems like a decent review, although it seems like there might be a way to make it a little more concise..

anyway, your review makes it sound like you might like azure ray - have you heard them?

the leglo (the leglo), Monday, 24 January 2005 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah i have. i didn't like there new one that much (a little boring), but i do enjoy their stuff.

I've got a couple minor suggestions that might be useful. I might use fewer parentheticals, and also, whenever I write something like, "When all I want is some sad but beautiful (and interesting) songs ... " I check myself and go with only one or two adjectives - trying to cram in three is like hedging your bets, and can be less effective.

I enjoyed the review. BTW, I also liked the Dean Roberts review today, though it could use some proofreading.

Chris Dahlen (Chris Dahlen), Monday, 24 January 2005 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks chris.

yeah, i normally don't get so crazy with parentheticals. even this morning i thought it was a bit much and i should have fixed it.

and thanks for the heads up on the Dean Roberts review. it's fixed now. my wife (yes, i run the site with my wife) usually catches all that stuff before it goes live, but she said she got busy and forgot to check that one.

Ha ha, I write for the web a lot, so believe me I know what that's like ... that's really cool that you run the site with your wife! I like the site, I read the Aloha and Dalek interviews recently and they were really good.

Chris Dahlen (Chris Dahlen), Monday, 24 January 2005 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks for the kind words chris.

actually, running it with my wife has been a blast. she keeps shit straight and keeps the whole thing moving.

hey chris, judging by your little blurb in the Found Sound article yesterday. you might like this interview too - Kayo Dot

Oh cool!

Nice to see thse guys getting press.

The design + content of this site is awfully good.

ng, Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks for the nice words NG. actually, we are launching a new site in a few weeks. i'll let you know when it's up. we actually used COLOR this time!

chris - that band is amazing. Toby (the leader of the bunch) has a solo album that he is putting the finishing touches on. i can't wait to hear it... i guess it's nothing like Kayo Dot.

deadair (deadair), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Jake, I hope you didn't over-do it on the color. The more a site looks like a newspaper or a magazine, the better.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 00:58 (twenty-one years ago)

no, it's not strong color. we just wanted to help make the redesign really look different.

i think too many sites talk "redesign" but nothing really happens.

deadair (deadair), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

It's nicely written. I'm not a fan of the "music as competition" thing at all, cf the first paragraph where you mention "the door is open" for someone to be the most popular band of this sort.

Didn't hugely rate the album either, for what it's worth; I love In The Afternoon but this one seems kinda sterile

DJ Mencap0))), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 11:55 (twenty-one years ago)

i understand what you are saying about the "music as competition" thing. but i think i just wrote that out of reaction to people i know and people i've read just backing the mainstays because they are the mainstays. it's not the best way to think about reviewing, i know, but it just came out.

deadair (deadair), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 12:57 (twenty-one years ago)

i like the review. the site is really looking good.
