In a career spanning 40 years, I don't think David Bowie has ever released an album that didn't have his face on the cover, has he?

Can anyone else beat this record of total narcissism?

Fred Pierreafeu, Monday, 24 January 2005 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

He's on there but no face.

The original version of Man Who Sold the World didn't, i don't think.

Don't forget: preening narcissists wouldn't have it any other way.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 24 January 2005 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, it's almost like he KNOWS that his personal sex appeal is responsible for a big chunk of his record sales!

Who'da thunked it?

Austin (Austin), Monday, 24 January 2005 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

prince has him beat.

Wha'bbout?

ah, but those ARE his hands!
no, to be fair, there's quite a few non prince prince covers.
Chaos and Disorder, around the world in a day (cartoon form!), the symbol album (he's barely there!)

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 24 January 2005 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

The original version of Man Who Sold the World didn't, i don't think.

But that's not the original version, it's the weird censored US version. The original has a photo of him lounging around in a dress.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Monday, 24 January 2005 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not sure of the chronology, actually. The first cover I ever remember of Man Who Sold.. had David doing a big rock pose ala Ace Frehley on the cover. Then, I discovered that bizarre cartoony rendition at my college radio station and verily proclaimed aloud: "WHAT THE FUCK>?".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 24 January 2005 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

The first version I remember...

I find this this idea that Bowie has sex appeal very odd.

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 24 January 2005 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

In addition to those being his hands, you can also see a tiny Prince drawn into the "P" of 1999, plus a lot of Prince's weirdness is just a diversion from his secret life as a crime-fighting bat.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 24 January 2005 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought this was the original...

walter kranz (walterkranz), Monday, 24 January 2005 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it was the original, Walter, which was swiftly replaced by either the weird rifle-toting cartoon cowboy cover and the big rock kick pose cover. I just remember seeing the big rock kick pose cover first (when I started paying attention, in other words).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 24 January 2005 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Bowie isn't on The Buddha of Suburbia or Christian F., but I'm too lazy to hunt down the images from AMG.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yes he is.

Austin (Austin), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex - thanks for the correction. My memory sucks sometimes.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:40 (twenty-one years ago)

tin machine was a BAND. hahaha.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

x-post

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

wha'bout Dylan?

sexyDancer, Monday, 24 January 2005 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh Mercy comes to mind - but it's true - he is on a lot of those covers.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

miccio (miccio), Monday, 24 January 2005 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

a bit ot, but nothing beats naming a magazine after yourself then appearing on its cover each month a la Oprah

mookieproof (mookieproof), Monday, 24 January 2005 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

muppet magazine did that shit all the time

miccio (miccio), Monday, 24 January 2005 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I would expect that Diana Ross's face is on every one of her albums. Not that I'm in a hurry to go check.
