Have you ever forgotten that you owned a particular record or CD and bought the same thing twice?

I haven't, but I fear that I will some day. I think that is the OFFICIAL "you own too much music" moment.

(note, I have downloaded the same thing twice without remembering that I already had it, but I don't think that should count)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 24 January 2005 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Not sure if this counts, but I've bought a compilation to attain one or two tracks that it turned out I'd unwittingly already owned in another format.

Right now, I'm deeply in the throes of owning too much music, and am selling large chunks of my collection off to www.secondspin.com (who actually pay pretty well for some stuff). Moreover, I'm taking great strides to curtail my disc-buying habits.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 24 January 2005 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not sure if that should count either. You're talking about distinct tracks appearing on different formats with different artwork, release date, etc. You're excused. (the different format aspect alone is enough to let you off the hook, we all have bought music on multiple formats and we have the ILM threads to prove it:) )

I should also qualify that my multiple downloading incidents were for live shows, which is also a lesser crime because those are easier to confuse than "proper" album or single releases.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 24 January 2005 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, I bought a Coltrane record about a year ago that I already had. Gave it to a roommate.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 24 January 2005 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Embarrassingly, yes. Swell Maps Collison Time Revisited and No Neck Blues Band's A Tabu Two Vol 2

I've accidentally downloaded the same Corrosion of Conformity song three times, and have about six mp3s of "Live Wire" by Motley Crue on my hard drive.

one never owns too much music.but i only saw this as a sign to stop buying more records and *revisit* my collection. this has not happened (yet). :-)

No Neck Blues Band's A Tabu Two Vol 2

well that looks a lot like vol 1 right? when there's no info on the sleeve, you should give yourself a little slack.

Have yourself a child and re-address that theory.

but i only saw this as a sign to stop buying more records and *revisit* my collection.

Yes, this is more precisely what I meant. By "owning too much musis", I really meant that you're accumulating music faster than you can process ti. Therefore, you need to spend more time catching up.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 24 January 2005 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost

I think Alex's point is a corollary (sp?) of my last point, i.e. "I cannot spend as much time with my music because of the baby".

In any case, the excess of music isn't the problem, it's the lack of available time needed to enjoy it.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 24 January 2005 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Purple Rain.

Had it for years and bought my wife a copy without realizing it. Oh well.

Brett Hickman (Bhickman), Monday, 24 January 2005 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

i just bought Within the Realm of a Dying Sun (Dead Can Dance) last week , got home, and realized I had it. I owned all of these at one point, and sold all of them at one point, and have since been buying them back, but I couldn't remember if I'd picked that one up yet. So if anyone needs it you can have it for $9.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 24 January 2005 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Had a different but similar moment a few weeks ago. A friend was visiting and we got to talking about the Indigo Girls' most recent albums. I mentioned how odd it was that Swamp Ophelia is my favorite album from them, yet I never bothered to upgrade it from cassette to CD. She perused my CD shelf and said, "No, here it is," and showed me the CD. I had no idea I'd ever bought it, and I still have no idea when or where. It was still in the shrinkwrap, as are about 15 other CDs I bought over the past three years. Oy.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

That reminds me of something which happened to me recently ... after reading Ned's "Music For the Masses" essay, I went to listen to my CD copy of the album -- and discovered that I didn't own it. I still had my cassette copy from back in the day but I could have sworn that I'd eventually bought the CD.

Many days later, I was going through some of my vinyl and there it was -- I found it at a used record shop several months ago. So I was correct in remembering that I'd bought the album, but had completely forgotten which format I had bought.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know that I've ever actually bought anything twice without knowing it, but I can certainly recall several instances where I got really excited about the idea of getting something and then realized I already had it. In any case, with the availability of music through internet, I think it's just a given that there will always be far too much music to squeeze into a limited amount of time. I think it's a great thing if people say "right I'm going to stop accumulating so I can catch up", but I live in a perpetual state of feeling like I will NEVER catch up.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I bought Kevin Coyne's "Pointing the Finger" twice by mistake. The two editions had different covers, and in my excitement I neglected to check which album I'd found. I think I assumed it was "Politicz", and I still don't know what the cover of that one looks like. Not quite the same thing - I've forgotten I'd sold a couple of things.

Pangolino again, Monday, 24 January 2005 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

i picked up Minimal Compact's Raging Souls LP twice for a similar reason. at least one was the Polish edition with the "Immigrant Song" 12" as a bonus. otherwise i'd have felt totally foolish about it.

echoinggrove (echoinggrove), Monday, 24 January 2005 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

The last 2 years of university, I didn't have much money, so I mostly stopped buying cds and downloaded instead. After that, when I got a real job and finally had some expendable income, I decided that I should buy the albums I downloaded. Of course, by now I had a list of hundreds of albums to buy, so often I'd go to the used cd store and come across a cd and have no idea if I actually owned a physical copy of this album or not.

this has happened to me more times than I can count.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Monday, 24 January 2005 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

3 copies of Another Green World - Eno on LP... after rebuying it once by accident, found it again for the same amount... had to re-up, now I have 3 copies each with a different price tag of $3.99

art?

autovac (autovac), Monday, 24 January 2005 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I've bought a few things twice. What the hell.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Monday, 24 January 2005 23:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, god I do this all of the time, mostly with LPs. If I buy too many at a time and file them away, it's easy to forget what I have.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Monday, 24 January 2005 23:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Guilty. I think the most horrifying moment was going to shelve the Haysi Fantayzee album I snagged only to find one already grazing amongst my herd. I mean, that's not the kind of thing you'd forget (let alone even admit) to owning!

Also, being a bit of a Pet Shop Boys and Dusty Springfield completist, I think I must own 5,000 copies of "What Have I Done to Deserve This." My hazy fantasy -- ala the Flaming Lips' Zaireeka meets Christian Marclay -- is to get 5,000 separate stereos and play all 5,000 copies of it, starting each one a split second after the other. Bet I could get an NEH grant to do it, too! Twyla Tharp can choreograph some Solid Gold Dancers alumni …. It could be great!

mottdeterre (mottdeterre), Monday, 24 January 2005 23:41 (twenty-one years ago)

i used to buy kylie minogue singles on all formats -7",2'and casingles before cdsingles between 87-90.

camberwell closetboy, Monday, 24 January 2005 23:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I bought Ian Dury's Laughter twice. And I had Robyn Hitchock's Perspex Island in my hand to buy again when I realized I already owned it.

I don't think it would be possible to buy two copies of anything I really liked (not by mistake I mean) .. it would have to be something I never listen to ...

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 00:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Not quite the same thing but maybe worth mentioning:
An album so nice...I bought it twice!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 01:31 (twenty-one years ago)

"yeah, I bought a Coltrane record about a year ago that I already had. Gave it to a roommate. "

I'm surprised you don't have your database of records programmed into your cell phone for quick and easy reference...

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 25 January 2005 01:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Not with a CD but this has happened several times with cheap LPs. Like, I'm always on the lookout for LPs from Bowie or the Dead if I can find them in good shape for little money, and sometimes I buy one I already have.

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

"one never owns too much music"

"Have yourself a child and re-address that theory."

Wait until that child grows up and leaves home then re-address that theory.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 09:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I downloaded Groove Is In The Heart to upload to my iPod rather than go next door and get the CD to rip it from.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 10:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex why don't you put the stuff you're disposing of here? You'd probably get much the same if not more, plus the warm glow of knowing they'll go to warm and loving homes.
