I'm blanking here... what NEW(ish) bands feature a guitar player known for his axe-weilding abilities? are guitar gods dead? jack white's the only current high profile guitar guy i can think of off the top of my dome, which is kinda pathetic on my part maybe.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:17 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe neil hagerty, too, but i don't know how "new" he is

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

the new dude in rtx?

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

jaimo welch? does he count?

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:20 (twenty-one years ago)

He should, he's great on that record.

danh (danh), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:20 (twenty-one years ago)

actually, to broaden the question, what other musicians are noted for their "chops" these days?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

funny that royal tru/rtx comes up in this, considering how anti-chops pussy galore was...

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

that is neil hagerty's genius: effortless-looking playing and an aloofness that totally rocks.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, exactly... what's the new rtx dude like?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

dunno about live, but he kicks ass on the record. tho it is a wonderfully great and dizzying pro tools job!

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Drum gods are the new guitar gods.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

such as?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

dude, j. mascis is so '87.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Wassisname, the dude in Hella.

Austin (Austin), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Mick Barr (Orthrelm)

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

If you're looking for mainstream examples, Tool's drummer (Danny Carey?) would seem to be the most obvious one.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

But maybe you're looking for a newer example.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

guitarists!

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Drum gods are the new guitar gods.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, dude, i repeat j. mascis is '87!

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

These guys in Mpls:

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Outside the mainstream, Oneida's Papa Crazy of course. Outside rock music, Oren Ambarchi and Annette Krebs.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 24 January 2005 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

the original guy in deerhoof (who i believe is now in 7 year rabbit cycle now) is pretty shredding.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 24 January 2005 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

john'n'chicago, Monday, 24 January 2005 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha, I was thinking of Danney Carey too. They seem to have set the nu-metal template for a lot of things, including a lack of guitar solos.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 24 January 2005 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Alberto Gonzalez? Condoleeza Rice?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 24 January 2005 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

they don't have to shred anything since they're getting away with it.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 24 January 2005 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Some day!

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 24 January 2005 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

we can only dream.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 24 January 2005 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

some dig on the kaki king thing... shreds tho? depends on your feelinheart.
m.

msp (msp), Monday, 24 January 2005 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually Adam Jones is worth mentioning as a modern-day guitar hero/anti-hero too.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 24 January 2005 22:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Brian Molko?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 24 January 2005 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Andy Cohen of Silkworm is amazing.

so is Nils Cline..just saw him with Wilco on Austin City Limits....twas great.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 24 January 2005 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

i can't stand nels cline.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 24 January 2005 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Robert Johnson

Star Cauliflower (Star Cauliflower), Monday, 24 January 2005 23:01 (twenty-one years ago)

i can't stand nels cline

why?

I remember seeing him with the Geraldine Fibbers and he blew my mind....what don't you like about him....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 24 January 2005 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

i hate his tone (esp. in the geraldine fibbers - yeeech!), i hate his playing, and he can't improvise very well but much like thurston moore will pass himself off as such.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 24 January 2005 23:13 (twenty-one years ago)

this weekend on SNL, Ludacris performed with Sum41 and that Indian dude played a shredding solo

Hella Fitzgerald (JasonD), Monday, 24 January 2005 23:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah Sum-41's definitely got a shredder in the midst

miccio (miccio), Monday, 24 January 2005 23:16 (twenty-one years ago)

kody neilson (mint chicks)
androu wilson (die! die! die!)
ethan miller (comets on fire)

chris andrews (fraew), Monday, 24 January 2005 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

hstencil nels' hate is crazy...

I nominate Kurihara from Ghost, who totally fucking shredded when I saw them live last year (also whoever the lead guitarist is in AMT). Definitely Ethan Miller too.

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 24 January 2005 23:19 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry dude, i think while technically good, he doesn't have what I like. tho he's okay on this old old tim berne record i used to have.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 24 January 2005 23:19 (twenty-one years ago)

kaki king does indeed shred, or at least would if she were so inclined.
her 4 song in-store gig @ amoeba yesterday was jawdropping for the songs alone, nevermind the technique.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Monday, 24 January 2005 23:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Cline was horrible the time I saw him. He kept playing with these *KOOKY* gadgets.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 24 January 2005 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah leave that to voice crack, nels!

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 24 January 2005 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

and keith rowe!

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 24 January 2005 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't defend Cline's solo output (haven't heard it) but his stuff w/the Fibbers and Carla is top notch in my book. And if we're talking just in terms of chops, he's definitely got 'em. Whether or not you like what he does with them is another matter...

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 24 January 2005 23:33 (twenty-one years ago)

so you're defending yngwie too?

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 24 January 2005 23:33 (twenty-one years ago)

While it's certainly not winning him any claims for originality, Nels Cline does that great Beefheart/D.Boon/Pop Group style of guitar playing Very Well IMO.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 24 January 2005 23:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Ynwgie is a technically highly proficient guitarist. He just has absolutely horrible taste in what he chooses to play.

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 24 January 2005 23:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Carrie Brownstein

Jimmy Mod always makes friends with women before bedding them down (ModJ), Monday, 24 January 2005 23:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Ynwgie is a technically highly proficient guitarist. He just has absolutely horrible taste in what he chooses to play.

that's how i feel about nels.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 24 January 2005 23:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Some of these might be in an idiom that doesn't appeal to a lot of readers here but:

On the jazz tip, Rez Abbasi combines graceful virtuosity with intricate compositional ideas and effective cross-cultural fusion, sometimes working with a sitar-guitar.

Nilan Perera manages to add something to every group with whom he plays, although it's usually so subtle and non-egotistical that it can be hard to notice at first. He plays on two radically different releases I liked from 2004: the free improv/noise disc Gathering by Smash & Teeny featuring John Butcher and Warm Belly High Power by trip-hop/South Asian-Canadian fusion group Lal. The audio samples on the Lal page, e.g. "Orange", give good examples of how he intricates his interest in subtleties of guitar timbre into a pop context.

With NOJO, Michael Occhipinti has creatively integrated the electric guitar into the big band. Good examples are "The First Day of School" and "Go Fly a Kite" (too bad the solo is cut off) from High Wire and "The Human Blockhead" from City of Neighbourhoods. There's a certain cheesy quality to it but I can deal with that; it's fun.

"...integrates his interest in subtelties of guitar timbre into a pop context."

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 05:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Whoever plays guitar in Mastodon can really play, I just don't know their name.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 05:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Ryan Fedor.

Brian Pickles, Tuesday, 25 January 2005 06:06 (twenty-one years ago)

somebody upthread mentioned the drummer in Hella, his name is Zach and he shreds like a bastard.

I second Mick Barr of Orthrelm, Octis, etc. as a bonafide shredder.

Do laptop programming chops as manifested in obviously live playing of one's software environment count? If so, I nominate Aelters and Keith Whitman and Richie Devine as chops-heavy dudes.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 06:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Does Markus Popp play guitar on So or is it all samples?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 06:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Drew, laptop programming does not qualify as chops unless you think pool players are athletes.

Luke Doucet is a shredding chop god when he plays with Veal, but his skills are completely hidden in his other projects and he's from Canada so I doubt anyone even knows who he is.

richie divine does shred tho.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 04:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, I meant the gutterist in Hella, but they both have chops pouring out their ears.

Austin (Austin), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 05:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Veal. Chop god.

mmmm.... veal chops...

Pouring out their ears.
