Damn, I don't know how to post a link...

Here's the site though: www.ambitious-outsiders.com

kickitcricket (kickitcricket), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Now here's hoping they don't sell out beforehand this time.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Portishead have risen from the grave.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

You can get tickets now.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait, where? The official page:

http://www.coachella.com/

...lists the dates (April 30, May 1) but the ticket section doesn't indicate they're on sale yet.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Ticketmaster link:

http://www.ticketmaster.com/artist/954606

...also indicates not on sale.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Link for 2-day pass, also not on sale yet:

kickitcricket (kickitcricket), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm, my friend said he bought his already. I will check.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

FUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCK

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

DAMN, that's a hot lineup.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, that could be how! I note presale has ended, alas. But I'd guess tickets will go on sale this weekend coming up. HMMM.

*prepares water balloons full of rotting fish guts for the Killers*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh wait, I see formal lineup announced the 31st. Hm and hm again.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Ill only go if

a. new order are confirmed

b. new order are confirmed and will DEFINATELY not tour the US

Juan, the Magic Don (jingleberries), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

This year, I'm just going to buy tickets as soon as they go on sale, even though I'm not sure if I'll go or not yet. Just judging by the experience of my 11th hour ticket acquisition last year, I think they would be VERY easy to unload if necessary.

kickitcricket (kickitcricket), Monday, 24 January 2005 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

every year i see the line-up and sigh longingly

Stevem On X (blueski), Monday, 24 January 2005 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Matmos is going to play it too, we're on May 1st.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Monday, 24 January 2005 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

SteveM, aren't you going to be in the US during this time?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 24 January 2005 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh nice, Drew. Are you folks playing anywhere else near here around that time?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 January 2005 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

a nice little line up. fiery furnaces should die, though. god, they suck.

Brad Seethe, Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Drew, I got into the 2003 Coachella thanks to you. Our mutual friends Keith and Kenny told me that you were putting everyone you knew who couldn't get on your guest list for the ritzier opera house Bjork shows on the Coachella guest list. And I was their LA contact/driver/plus one. So, thanks! I had a swell time.

Hot Bitch with an Elecric Guitarthur (Arthur), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 06:59 (twenty-one years ago)

holy shit. i don't know if i've recovered from coachella 2004 yet. guess i'll start saving up... and what happened? I heard Bowie was headlining.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 07:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Nine Inch Nails and Coldplay have been confirmed. I guess we know the headliner for at least 1 day now.

kickitcricket (kickitcricket), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

And from the same website...

"Just to clarify a couple of things. I just got off the phone with a person of Higher Power (and by that I hope you know who I'm referring to). The said person just wanted to clarify a couple of our posts. Portishead/Massive Attack are not expected to play this year. Although they do have hopes for them for future Coachella's. We jumped the gun on those two but the rest are legit."

kickitcricket (kickitcricket), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

BAH. How obnoxious, I was really looking forward to Portishead in particular, as both times I've seen them they were simply fantastic live. NIN, yay, but Coldplay, good lord.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I've read three completely different lineups.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Well here's what that ambitious-outsiders.com place was claiming in terms of specific confirmation info:

» Nine Inch Nails (by reps at William Morriss Agency)
» Coldplay (by reps at William Morriss Agency)
» New Order (by repst)
» Gang of Four (by the NY Times)
» Rilo Kiley (by Jenny Lewis)
» the Futureheads (by Dave Hyde)
» the Doves (by Billboard.com)
» Autolux (by their email newsletter)
» M83 (by their new promo sticker put out by the label)
» the Bravery (by their manager Pete Galli)
» Radio 4 (by their manager Brian Long)
» Fiery Furnaces (by Billboard.com)
» the Killers (by the NME)
» Wolf Eyes (by SubPop)
» the Arcade Fire (by many emails I've received)
» Boom Bip (by the Windish Agency)
» Four Tet (by the Windish Agency)
» Diplo (by the Windish Agency)
» Matthew Dear (by the Windish Agency)
» Miss Kittin (by the Windish Agency)
» Sixtoo (by the Windish Agency)
» the Perceptionists (by the Windish Agency)
» Subtle (by their booking agency - KORK)

The rumor that is amusing me greatly is a Pulp appearance. I have my doubts.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Spencer, you're right but i'll be in NY and a return flight from there to LA plus ticket just for a couple of days is stretching it for me!

Stevem On X (blueski), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

exceedingly tempting tho.

Stevem On X (blueski), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

i went last year & its a grand time but if you're going to do the two day onsite camping thing-make sure to get there hours early on saturday- or else you will wait in your car for hours to get in. the security is much less tight on sunday by the way. if i go again i am going to camp offsite.

come on sock it to me, Wednesday, 26 January 2005 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

mayahee, mayahoo, mayaha, mayahaha (deangulberry), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

oh and the schedule changes, like the pixies were scheduled to headline saturday but they went on before sunset and before radiohead and kraftwerk.

NIN does a separate tour, New Order does a different tour as well, M83 does another swingthrough = based on the rest of this lineup so far, now I'm not as interested.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

i went last year and it's slightly less hideous than you'd expect an outdoor festival in the desert to be, but only slightly. kraftwerk made it worth it.

dan (dan), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

day 1 yes. day 2 no.

owen reading, Wednesday, 26 January 2005 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

camping offsite is pretty fun. I'd recommend it. I cant remember where I stayed a couple years ago, but its a cheap alternative to much bullshit.

however, waking up at 7am because youre being slow roasted kinda sucks.

Juan, the Magic Don (jingleberries), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

lake cahuilla

mayahee, mayahoo, mayaha, mayahaha (deangulberry), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

whoa I just saw portishead. NO WAY!!! i love them. can't wait for them to finally release something new

NEW ORDER AND GANG OF FOUR!

Okay, okay, so I shouldn't get excited until I have a ticket first. But my plan is to fly down.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Thursday, 27 January 2005 07:07 (twenty-one years ago)

lots of montreal rep!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 27 January 2005 07:15 (twenty-one years ago)

yea, kraftwerk was one of the best performances, along with radiohead, pixies, flaming lips, broken social scene, and (surprisingly) Air. I think the highlight of the whole shebang was put on by The Rapture, though. I still think it was the best live show i've ever seen... And Beck filled in for Wilco and tried to play a song using a mended gameboy. didn't work out. pretty anti-climactic.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Thursday, 27 January 2005 07:22 (twenty-one years ago)

it was hot as fuck last year, but yeah, kraftwerk made it worth it. and lcd soundsystem!

?!?!?

Huh. Well, I've seen them before and all, so I think I'll just wait on the Dead Can Dance tour instead. Still...this is WEIRD news.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 31 January 2005 07:10 (twenty-one years ago)

"As of press time Sunday, Tollett was still wrestling with adding another major American rock act to the bill before today's announcement. He also has to try to find a solution to the horrific traffic congestion that has plagued past Coachella events."

Amen to that.

i'd sworn it off after last year-- having inhaled so much dust i had to go to the medic tent and get an albuterol treatment during basement jaxx's set (which sounded absolutely exquisite in the distance). but looks like i'll have to be going again. i'll be the one who looks like he doesn't want to get SARS.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Monday, 31 January 2005 10:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahah, not-attending-Coachella LA FAP!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 31 January 2005 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I'm buying a NYC ticket instead. Isn't Stevem going to be visiting?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 31 January 2005 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Does anyone see getting tickets for this as being an extremely difficult feat to accomplish? What's the consensus here? Was it bad for Coachellas in the past? I still have horrible horrible memories of coming THAT close to getting Radiohead tix online for the Hollywood Bowl in 2001. Later I ended up using my "Bush tax cut" check to get tickets on ebay at a much higher price. I don't want to go through that kind of emotional meat grinder again, if I can help it.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Going to Coachella was fine until Radiohead played there.

Site Admistrator (deangulberry), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 00:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I think you should be able to get tickets, just check the site periodically.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 00:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Dean's onto something: you should have no trouble getting tickets this year because theres no radiohead. Hotels and shit is another problem.

Dude, are you a 15 year old asian chick? (jingleberries), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Is that when Stevem is visiting? Darn, my NYC trip is going to be late March.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 00:52 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
This was posted on the Coachella site:

It is with regret that Cocteau Twins announce they will not be performing at the Coachella Valley Music Festival on April 30th as had been planned. Due to personal reasons, member Elizabeth Fraser has decided that she is unable to participate in the reunion, and apologies for any inconvenience that this has caused.

Hooky getting down, from tonight's show:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/lukas/11919355/

Bernard was a bit hobbled, sadly.

Lukas (lukas), Monday, 2 May 2005 06:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Why? What do you mean hobbled? DETAILS PLEASE.

The Silent Disco of Glastonbury (Bimble...), Monday, 2 May 2005 06:57 (twenty-one years ago)

WOW, I actually had fun! More tomorrow.

Barney was wincing from some torn ligament injury. That said, he's really found his own voice singing the Joy Division songs - "Transmission" was overwhelming.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 2 May 2005 07:38 (twenty-one years ago)

The weather was great. The music was great. The festival was great.

New Order were kind of lame (though would have been great if they stuck to their hits; also, they kind-of played the mash-up of "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" and "Blue Monday," which delighted me to no end). Weezer and Wilco were boring.

Bauhaus fucking blew my mind. They were phenomenal.

Also great:
British Sea Power
The Fiery Furnaces
The Faint
Autolux
Zap Mama
Chemical Brothers (I was on E, though)

and The Kills were tough as hell and definitely THE most unheralded act of the entire show. Brilliant stuff.

Eric Seguy, Monday, 2 May 2005 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Bauhaus fucking blew my mind. They were phenomenal.

Ah, good to hear. Personally nothing could have topped the reunion shows in 1998 in my brain just for the sheer pleasure of seeing them again at all, so this had less appeal for me on that front, but it's nice to hear that they brought it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 May 2005 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, good to hear. Personally nothing could have topped the reunion shows in 1998 in my brain just for the sheer pleasure of seeing them again at all, so this had less appeal for me on that front, but it's nice to hear that they brought it.

Dude came onstage hanging from the rafters from his ankles, singing "Bela Lugosi Is Dead." It only got better from there. As a sidenote that could either totally discredit my opinion of the performance, or just reinstate how amazing it was, I'd never cared much for Bauhaus before last night. Actually I'd never really heard much outside of "She's In Parties," "Kick In The Eye," and "Bela Lugosi's Dead." After that performance, I went out and bought three Bauhaus CDs. I'm not fucking around anymore.

Eric Seguy, Monday, 2 May 2005 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

:-D No discrediting there at all, m'friend -- it is better to come to something cool late than not at all. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 May 2005 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Pretty fun. Never though I'd hear New Order playing "Love Will Tear Us Apart" through the walls of a Port-o-Let. The Kills were great, Arcade Fire drew this massive spillover crowd, as did MIA and Bloc Party. During MIA's set this clowd of bees (!) flew right through the crowd, and almost no one noticed!

Bauhaus pretty cool. Snow Patrol/Keane very boring (the latter sounds like Air Supply!). Wilco was fine. Coldplay drew a big crowd but offered no surprises. Nine Inch Nails tore it up, etc. Fiery Furnaces pretty good, too. Alas, virtually nil surprises across the board, come to think about it, but one of the nicest things about Coachella is how well everything is run. I guess that means surprises must be kept to a minimum.

I really would have liked to see Doves and Cocteau Twins.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 2 May 2005 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, yeah: best things overheard.

1) "This is the Kills. Not the Killers, not the Distillers, no the Thrills. Just the Kills."

2) Some guy asking me "Is this Bloc Party?" during Mercury Rev's set.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 2 May 2005 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

2) Some guy asking me "Is this Bloc Party?" during Mercury Rev's set.

COGNITIVE DISSONANCE.

(One of my greatest regrets in life, because the opportunity never arose -- never being able to see the David Baker-led version of the Rev.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 May 2005 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

During MIA's set this clowd of bees (!) flew right through the crowd

that's amazing. she probably summoned them.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Monday, 2 May 2005 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

How was the Arcade Fire? I purposely avoided them because I was certain they'd have the most obnoxious crowd ever, plus I don't really like them anyway. I saw the tall guy with the red hair in the VIP lounge, though. Also Chris Kattan who my friend purposely humiliated--his girlfriends proceeded to freak out at my friend, it was fucking hilarious. Oh, and I saw the Bloc Party guys everywhere but did my best to ignore them because they had this very "look at me, milling with the common people" look on their faces.

Eric Seguy, Monday, 2 May 2005 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

"look at me, milling with the common people"

Did they sing along with them?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 May 2005 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Lukas (lukas), Monday, 2 May 2005 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought more people would have been excited about going/how things went. I guess the lack of enthusiasm amongst my circle of friends wasnt an isolated thing. I wonder how well they did business wise?

Actor Sizemore fails drug test with fake penis (jingleberries), Monday, 2 May 2005 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

This is the only year I even considered going (and did). There was no Radiohead which for me is basically a good thing - not that I hate them so much, but mainly because there wasn't this huge crush of people to see them (don't know if that hurt their sales. There were a lot of great performances: Bloc Party, The Arcade Fire (who I like more now), Futureheads, Gang of Four (really great, and I found one fan's unfurling of the Soviet flag to be quite endearing), MIA, Bauhaus, even Coldplay - and of course NEW ORDER. We left right after New Order and there was a massive surge of people to see Nine Inch Nails. Still the whole thing was kind of mellow and despite the tesla coil there was a lack of electricity in the air (sorry).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 2 May 2005 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I was kinda sad when the good weather was the only thing that made me really want to go earlier in the week. that and New Order, obv...

Actor Sizemore fails drug test with fake penis (jingleberries), Monday, 2 May 2005 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

i can't believe bauhaus didn't cram a stop in SF in there before coachella. bastards

The Bravery were not very good. My friend wanted to see them because she's liked a couple songs from the radio, but even she said "that sucked".

The weather was really nice. Slightly too hot on Sunday, but I didn't even go til 4 anyway, so it was perfect.

Oh and Spoon sounded great - loved the guitar sounds - too bad I still can't ever recall a single one of their songs.

How hot was it by the time of New Order's set? Dealable?

All reports I've read so far of the Gang of Four set say it was really something. This is good to hear as I'll be seeing them soon and have been kindof worried about how the whole reunion thing might be going for them.

WTF Peter Murphy hanging upside down?!?! Hahaha. Man, never put anything past THAT man on a stage! What's next, turning into a bat and flying away?

Weather was great all weekend. After 5pm it was nice and cool - the weather was perfect for New Order.

Ah, a bright spot in the muck for Barney then. Good. It's nice to know at least the weather cooperated.

I'm regretting not going to it this year. :(

I'm pondering if I should go and see Gang of Four this weekend. That is if there are tickets still available.

The Gang of Four set I heard sounded great. But I was whizzing by on a golfcart on the way to setting up gear and didn't actually see them except through dense foliage and chainlink fences (nice). The only people I actually saw perform at Coachella: M.I.A. and Wolf Eyes. Fun fun fun. It wasn't as hellishly sweaty and baking as the last time I was at this thing. I sort of had forgotten about the whole backstage competitive band trailer first day of highschool coolness competition vibe (paranoia under the sun).

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 02:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Heavens, Drew, you mean everyone was trying to outdo each other with the 'I am an artist' vibe? Please, surely Mr. P. Murphy owned you all there (and I mean that not as criticism but appreciation, he just walks tall and sinuously is all I mean).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 02:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I wasn't on site the night Bauhaus played (tho I did run into Dav1d J the year we played there before and he was really nice and not snobby at all, very friendly chap). No, it's more the "I'm up and coming and who are you?" kinda vibe that goes around, and that's not something that people who have been at it for a long time tend to dish out.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 03:18 (twenty-one years ago)

ugh, i wish i could have gone. maybe lollapalooza can almost maybe tiny bit make up for it.

did anyone go to the filter mag party?

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 03:38 (twenty-one years ago)

x-post yeah, I saw the Bloc Party guys and the (shirtless) Razorlight singer everywhere.

Arcade Fire drew what seemed to me the largest non-main stage crowd. M.I.A. did a short set, then came out for an encore. New Order seemed disappointed with their short slot - no "True Faith," no "Temptation," etc, and Barney ended by saying "We don't have any more time, but that's life." I didn't realize they were only doing 4 US dates, and am happy to be seeing them again tonight.

The weather was great, no higher than 90 during the day and much cooler at night. I heard last year it was still in the upper 80s when the sun went down.

Did anyone see the Cocteaus? (Did they even play after all?) I'd like to hear a report, if so.
