john'n'chicago, Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Oscar never gets this category even half-right.

Brett Hickman (Bhickman), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

what notable original songs from movies last year should've been nominated?

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

...The Chorus?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Sleepy Brown featuring OutKast - "I Can't Wait (from BarberShop 2)
Massive Attack - "I Am Home" (from Danny the Dog)

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

"Accidentally In Love" fucking rules. Haven't heard any of the others, but I'm against Phantom Of The Opera and "BELIEVE" on principle. Here's hoping they trudge that goofy Rowlf lookalike on stage! woot!

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

literally the first thing i thought about was miccio running around in circles and leaping leprechaun stylee at this.

xpost

john'n'chicago, Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Ché loved singing banal love songs as he fomented world revolution.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

....oh Anthony.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

anthony, how the fuck can you like this song? i think it was my most hated single of last year. granted, the video had a lot to do with that.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

"Believe" would totally have my support if it was the Cher song.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

The video is stupid, but once I heard the song without it I liked it a lot. And I really hate saying that, because saying "I liked that Counting Crows song" makes me feel kinda like George Bailey in It's a Wonderful Life when he says "You've got a deal, Mr. Potter!" and shakes his hand and then gets this sick "what have I just said?" look on his face. But dammit I like it.

Rick Massimo (Rick Massimo), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

the video is like, satan bad, but on the radio its like a more ecstatic "You Make Lovin' Fun" with Adam Duritz doing his ramble-mamble hoppin' thing which I can handle when its up tempo and he doesn't end the track by yelling "YEAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH"

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Now you've given me visions of Adam Duritz doing crunk and I hate you.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

plus I try to be sympathetic to guys like Rob Thomas and Adam Duritz as I bet I sound equally awkward and goofy when trying to profess romantic affection

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

i admit to liking about a half-dozen counting crows songs. this, however, is not one of them.

i wonder if they'd used that pixies song instead, as discussed on another thread, would they have been nominated?

john'n'chicago, Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a Motorhead song on the soundtrack to the Spongebob Squarepants movie. If that isn't a sign of impending apocalypse, I certainly don't know what is.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

No doubt you have better hair than either Adam or Rob, Anthony.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

They have more to work with, so its only because they make such bad choices.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

actually, I hear Duritz wears extensions. If I was allowed to wear my hipster shag wig all the time I'd be the best of the three.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex, the track on the Spongebob soundtrack by Tweedy's kid is the sign of the apocalypse. Or maybe we have the Twin Horsemen.

Duritz doesn't wear extensions anymore. But he did when he initially became famous i.e. when he was boning Jennifer Antiston and Courtney Cox.

I like "Accidentally In Love"--it's a great song. And that's even after my son playing it 12,480 times or so.

don weiner, Tuesday, 25 January 2005 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

This song is nothing but green fields, blue skies, puffy white clouds, pretty flowers, rainbows, unicorns, suns with little smiley faces in them, etc. Disliking this song = disliking happiness.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

crazy in love

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I was waiting for that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Jon Brion deserved some recognition for his "Eternal Sunshine" and "Huckabees" soundtracks.

darin (darin), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

-- Alex in NYC (vassife...), January 25th, 2005.

There was an entire episode that had music provided by Pantera. The voice of Spongebob is done by Tom Kinney (I believe that's his name) from the Mr. Show. Any sort of hip thing they do doesn't surprise me one bit.

David Allen (David Allen), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

At the same time?

That is a perfect Akbar & Jeff cartoon you've made there.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 04:02 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
The Oscar went to: "Al Otro Lado Del Rio" from "The Motorcycle Diaries"

i've never heard it. any good?

sorry, miccio.

john'n'chicago, Monday, 28 February 2005 04:29 (twenty-one years ago)

The song is beautiful - Antonio Banderas & Carlos Santana performed it at the show, Prince presented the award, and Jorge Drexler (songwriter) sang
part of it a capella as his acceptance speech. It was one the best moments in the show.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 28 February 2005 04:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Eh, not going by Antonio Banderas' rendition.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Monday, 28 February 2005 04:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw Leo Sidran play the other night, opening for Shivaree. He told the story of how "El Otro Lado" was recorded here in Madison...but it wasn't very interesting. Just that they admired each other's work, blah blah blah. But they'll all have hangovers tomorrow!

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Monday, 28 February 2005 05:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I still think that it was the most compelling performance, even with Antonio Banderas's wet hair -- better than Beyonce and fuckin' Josh Groban.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 28 February 2005 05:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Beyonce would have sang Yo Yo Ma's cello solo, had she been allowed. Antonio's presence was a blessing, comparatively.

subgenius (subgenius), Monday, 28 February 2005 05:31 (twenty-one years ago)

That was some good shit.

subgenius (subgenius), Monday, 28 February 2005 05:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Adam Duritz or Sideshow Bob? You decide.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 28 February 2005 05:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the fact that he's hanging onto a hairstyle that even Chris Kirkpatrick from N Sync was too embarrassed to keep up with for long.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 28 February 2005 05:48 (twenty-one years ago)

is the song that won the song Antonio Banderas covered (I dunno I was at work and only know what the ILE thread tells me)? Cuz if it was I'm totally OK with it, cuz as much as I enjoy "Accidentally In Love" I sure as fuck think Antonio Banderas is cooler than Adam Duritz. God that pic is disgusting.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 28 February 2005 07:28 (twenty-one years ago)

you can totally see how balding he is. Those dreads might as well be photoshopped he looks like that gay dude who used to rate movies on the daily show (p.s. I'm drunk). SAD SAD ADAM DURITZ.

The song is still awesome, though.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 28 February 2005 07:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Antonio Banderas & Carlos Santana performed it at the show

just saw this upthread!

so yes I am quite fine with this upset.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 28 February 2005 07:31 (twenty-one years ago)

banderas sang it well but santana's performance was awful, he was just spraying his trademark licks all over the song with absolutely no regard for the mood or even rhythm.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Monday, 28 February 2005 07:51 (twenty-one years ago)

"Accidentally in Love" seems like a pretty good song, if it was performed by another band. Like, I don't know, Beulah? Matthew Sweet? The Ramones?

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 28 February 2005 08:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I love the subject line of this thread because it makes me picture Anthony as the dreadlocked animated bunny from the video leaping for joy.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 28 February 2005 08:11 (twenty-one years ago)

that video is so disgusting I'll totally forgive people for hating on the song if that's the only place they've heard it.

http://andrejkoymasky.com/liv/fam/biod1/deca1.jpg

Frank DeCaro. That's who Duritz looks like in that pic.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 28 February 2005 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

no way, the video is great. like when the girl is in her underwear and the Duritz-bunny is looking at her ass.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 28 February 2005 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

This song is like a rancid meat sunflower puking up blood and rotten two-week old splooge and rainbows and cartoon vaginas and ice-cream sprinkles all over the ancient, respectable, hand-woven quilt that used to be "love". All accusations that anti-appreciation for this song have anything to do with one's levels of fun acceptance are monstrously off-base. I don't like this song =\= I hate fun, I don't like this song = I don't like to be reminded of what it feels like to puke whole candy canes out of my anus.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 28 February 2005 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I take it your offspring owns the Shrek 2 DVD and/or soundtrack?

Al (sitcom), Monday, 28 February 2005 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, for fuck's sake, why is Adam Duritz? WHY!?!?!?!?!?!?!? God, if you are real, you are the evilest fucker ever.

x-post haha thank goodness not!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 28 February 2005 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I take it your offspring owns the Shrek 2 DVD and/or soundtrack?

Hahahahahahahaaaa.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Monday, 28 February 2005 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I would rather listen to the sound of my own vital organs exiting my body violently by means of sulfuric acid than hear this fucking song again.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 28 February 2005 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

See, now i HAVE to hear this...

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 28 February 2005 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I sub for Leo (who produced the Motorcycle Diaries song) on drums a lot. Haven't heard the tune/seen the movie yet, though.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 28 February 2005 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

nickalicious otm. also, that picture is appalling, it looks like he's being hoisted off the ground by a giant pube spider.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 28 February 2005 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I'd be able to show more mercy for this song if it wasn't such a blatant paint-by-numbers WE'RE GONNA DO A SONG THAT WILL BE A BIG HIT LOVE SONG BECAUSE EVERYONE LOVES "FUN" BIG HIT LOVE SONGS thing, like, if it didn't feel so much a product of a marketing decision rather than just another earnest, inspired-by-something-banal piece of shit.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 28 February 2005 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

"Oopsydoodle, It Seems Like I'm About To Be Falling In Luh-diddly-URV!" by Ned Flanders

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 28 February 2005 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

actually I think the hit by numbers aspect is part of the charm. CC have said that they were like the Shrek people's 3rd choice for the big soundtrack song, and that they felt like the absolute wrong people to call for a fun upbeat love song but they pulled one out of their ass anyway.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 28 February 2005 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

that song was fucking awful. out of their ass is right.
