Once I heard Green Day, I remembered how much better Stiff Little Fingers were at doing the same damn thing.

You may have lifted that bit of misinformation from "High Fidelity," but as completely devoid of originality though they may certainly be -- Green Day don't sound like the Stiff Little Fingers. Billie Joe's voice sounds nothing like Jake Burns' implausibly gruff bark, and Green Day has never sounded as savage as the SLF. Green Day sound like THE DICKIES, not the Stiff Little Fingers.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 28 January 2005 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

No, I don't think Green Day sound like an exact Stiff Little Fingers clone. I just think they were trying to do a very similar thing early on and not doing as good a job of it.

I remember that being in High Fidelity, but I also remember agreeing with it.

I never much thought about Green Day sounding like The Dickies, but then I haven't listened to Green Day in years, and I listened to the Dickies a few days ago. So hey, what do I know?

(Come to think of it, "Suspect Device" is also featured in the soundtrack of the Playstation game I've been playing lately, so I've listened to those guys recently as well. Maybe I should pull out Dookie or Kerplunk and get my girlfriend to help me out with a blind comparison test.)

Once I heard Screeching Weasel.... and then10 years later the entire pop-punk ripped them off exploding with Green Day whose bass player actually played on one SW album.

Woops! Broke format.

"Suspect Device" is in a video game? You're shittin' me! What game? Grand Theft Auto: `77 Portobello Road or something?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 28 January 2005 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I was surprised as well. It's in the first Tony Hawk's Underground. Then again, it's in decent company on that soundtrack, and the games in the series preceding it have also had some interestingly good choices as well.

martin m. (mushrush), Friday, 28 January 2005 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually there's a GBH song in there too ("Crush 'Em").

Of course, one of the secrets unlocked by beating the game is the ability to skate as Gene Simmons, so...
