mario - "u should let me love u"

my current obsession, which is weird cause i don't normally go for loverboy soul. produced by scott storch. it has this keening whale noise in it, plus mario's vocal hook is great. really nice, yearning, understated chorus AND a left-turn bridge about 3/4ths in that is really kind of inspired.

anyone else?

(first person to say "no" gets a fucking cookie.)

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

the video looks like Chris Rock's lost New Edition audition video from 1987

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

It is great, I entirely understand why it went to number one. The remix is aite too.

deej., Wednesday, 26 January 2005 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh and Kris Exo mused in his blog that dude might be gay.

deej., Wednesday, 26 January 2005 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

anthony can you just cut to the part where you say this song sucks so that i can be absolutely positive of its greatness?

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

actually I don't think the song is bad at all. Kinda generic and some goofy word choices ("make me your selection") but its pleasant. I'd be surprised its as big as it is if not for Ushermania.

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

we should not let mario release his post new edition, luther vandross wanna-be crap

ghonny jill, Wednesday, 26 January 2005 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Mario is a good singer but there is something about him that makes me want to beat him with bats.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

his Baltimore credentials are suspect (he won't say what school he went to, and he moved to Jersey to record his first album), but I'll rep for him. all the singles on his first album were great.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

It was kind of cute how he resurrected the whole three girls being followed by three guys going "oooh baby baby" G-rated thing in the "Just A Friend" video.

Dude makes Chris Rock faces though. I can't believe he's still getting love.

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 23:10 (twenty-one years ago)

why? it worked for chris rock.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

not as a teen singing sensation!

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 23:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean if some kid came along looking like a young Jerry Seinfeld I wouldn't expect him to be the new Justin Timberlake

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 23:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I think this is CRAZY boring. But then, I think "Burn" is too; go figure.

Mario looks the way Chris Rock looks NOW (post money/fame/exfoliant) as opposed to Chris Rock THEN; that helps a lot.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

just freaks me out. i guess the kids don't mind.

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

his Baltimore credentials are suspect (he won't say what school he went to, and he moved to Jersey to record his first album)

why would he fake being from Baltimore? (not trying to diss yr hometown - go Ottobar! - but I'm just curious)

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

He's really from ST. CROIX!!!!!!!

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 27 January 2005 00:42 (twenty-one years ago)

i wouldn't pay $ for it, but downloaded it and have been repeat playing it. mario, i want you to love me...

Molly, Thursday, 27 January 2005 00:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Mark you must have been reading my mind. The lyrics are dreadful but something about this song is positively addictive.

Wookie Rookie, Thursday, 27 January 2005 04:25 (twenty-one years ago)

You guys want the Bob Dylan of R&B or something?

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Thursday, 27 January 2005 04:26 (twenty-one years ago)

This song is the definition of a #43 single.

What the fuck has it been doing at #1 for the last five weeks?

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 27 January 2005 06:52 (twenty-one years ago)

four years pass...

I know I had heard this song in the past but I just heard it on the radio a few days ago, and now it's on infinite loop. It's not a particularly remarkable song but once I put it on I can't turn it off. There's a special place in my heart for silky smooth r&b jamz that never get old, no matter how much I play them out.

What's D.N.A. like?

One of Ne-Yo's first big songwriting credits.

r|t|c, Thursday, 15 July 2010 16:47 (fifteen years ago)

amazing song.

dammit i've been trying to think of a song that was its close competitor/follow-up... it was a little in the vein of kevin lyttle too, a lite dancehall feel in the rhythm. anyone know what i'm trying to remember here?? i don't even know WHO anymore

ridiculous request i know. i've considered starting a "sunshiney loverman hits of the early 00s" just hoping this mythical object turns up.

ultimate worrier (goole), Thursday, 15 July 2010 16:59 (fifteen years ago)

That "What's Love Got To Do With It" keyboard part is a large part of its charm for me.

I'm never gonna do it without the Lex on (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 15 July 2010 17:02 (fifteen years ago)

such a wonderful song. i secretly liked his flop comeback single "how do i live," too, don't laugh @ me

teledyldonix, Thursday, 15 July 2010 17:14 (fifteen years ago)

ohh i think i remember that one, super obviously similar to 'lmly' right? haha yeah i couldnt resist it either

sadly no! that's good tho, could listen to that sound for basically any length of time.

i'm pretty sure it was an american R&B dude gently riding the end of diwaliish fashionability. i may have to just comb thru the billboard charts for that time period until i find it again...

ultimate worrier (goole), Thursday, 15 July 2010 18:39 (fifteen years ago)

some scandalous dude on xxl...? the hardbody guy?

r|t|c, Thursday, 15 July 2010 19:03 (fifteen years ago)

kris ex was an older rap mag writer who briefly had a batshit blog full of bible verses and pictures of guns.

xpost -- he was on xxl for a minute but i think dallas penn/billy sunday was the one who said 'hardbody' all the time

my nickname on ILX is frapped up shawty (some dude), Thursday, 15 July 2010 19:04 (fifteen years ago)

hardbody was billy sunday -- he was the one who interviewed joell ortiz under some bridge in ny or something

i always confuse kris ex and pete l'official -- one of them wrote a thing in spin about mickey factz last year

^^^^ Truth Forever.

I feel I should know what this mystery song is too.

I'm assuming Chris Brown "Yo (Excuse Me Miss)" is too obvious.

Tim F, Thursday, 15 July 2010 21:28 (fifteen years ago)

at the risk of thread derailment, if goole should like to hear more breathtaking lenky r&b of the era:

Mister AOR (The Reverend), Friday, 16 July 2010 07:17 (fifteen years ago)

i heard "i don't wanna know" on the radio today. it's ok. that "boadicea" sample has gotten around hasn't it? mario winans feat p diddy AND ENYA always made me lol, imagining enya laying a rap over the track after diddy's part.

joe "i wanna know" SO GOOD

teledyldonix, Friday, 16 July 2010 18:29 (fifteen years ago)

ha ok, well...

i am embarrassed and elated to report, the song i had halfway in my head is ne-yo's "sexy love"

all i could remember was that itchy little string line in the chorus, and the handclaps. funny how that works.

ultimate worrier (goole), Monday, 19 July 2010 20:41 (fifteen years ago)

was just about to suggest an alzheimers consultant but listening to it again your brain has correctly drawn a vague caribbean line there i never woulda thought of! a sweeter secret precursor to 'miss independent' anyway.

it still came out 2 years later tho!!
