Button 1: WXPN (College Radio Station with lots of folky stuff. Plus Celtic music and Reggae on Saturdays, and New Age lullaby music from midnight until I fall asleep.)
Button 2: WWFM (Classical. For when all the other stations have commercials or music I;m not interested in)
Button 3: WPTP ("80's" Station. Plays two or three good tunes then decides to ruin the vibe with Reo Stationwagon or Toto or somesuch.)
Button 4: WYSP or WMMR (I switch every couple of weeks between these two "Classic Rock" Stations.)
By combinations of any of these buttons I can quickly reach another College Station (WPRB) which comes in clear when the wind blows from the southeast, and a station that switches back and forth between classical and jazz. (I Don't remember the call letters, they play roughly 45 minutes of music between each break.)

I switch back and forth between the only college radio station in town and NPR.

Jeff, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ha.
1. WPRB (college, sometimes too college, radio)
2. WYSP (that awkward classic rok/gnu metal blend)
3. WMMR (as 2, "without all the rap"[?!])
4. some 'classic hits' station i'm too lazy to replace
5. the station that used to be funk/soul/r&b and is now puss rock like train and matchbox 20.
6. the philadelphia hip-hop station that sadly doesn't play dancehall much anymore.

i wish pirate radio was the phenomenon in the US it is/was in the UK - here people just do it so they can do crazy things like broadcasting IN THE NUDE.

your null fame, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Does ANYONE really want ot think about John Peel in the Nude?
By the way...where are you? You must be in Jersey 'cuz thats the only place I think of where WPRB could come in clear. I suspect their broadcast wattage is something like 9 volts.

Lord Custos, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But I do agree that pirate radio is a really good idea.
Unfortunately, its now illegal in this country.

Lord Custos, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Doesn't stop us, we're crazy lawbreakers.

I dont have a car. Isabel tunes into EAGLE FM 96.4 broadcasting to Guildford and Godalming. ROCK AND ROLL!

Tom, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

1. CBC Radio One 99.1 FM 2. CBC Radio Two 94.1 FM 3. CIUT 89.5 FM

Mostly it stays on Radio One (how BBC), though.

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Studio Brussel. Mix of all genres: From pop to dance and even some Dutch hip hop. Used to be better but alas there's not much else here.

helenfordsdale, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What is this 'car' you speak of?

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think he's talking about Mint Car, Ned. Back to sleep.

Let me see if I can remember all the call signs:

1. WQSX Star 93.7: This is one of Joei's stations. Most of their playlist is eurodance and disco.
2. WJMN Jam'n 94.5: The commercial hip-hop/R&B station.
3. WBOT 97.7: The slightly-less-commercial hip-hop station. (Lack of website greatly enhances street cred.)
4. WFNX 101.7: The first "modern rock" station I discovered out here. Joei won't let me play it when she's in the car. 75% of the time, this is the correct decision.
5. WMJX Magic 106.7: A soft- rock station. This is another one of Joei's. I would like them more if they played America.
6. 107.9 WXKS, aka Kiss 108: Top 40. Relentlessly top 40. Because of the current state of the top 40, has a playlist more diverse than any other station barring a couple of the college stations.

One of these is going get bumped for WERS sometime soon, but I don't know which one yet. Or maybe I'll start using the second bank of FM buttons...

1. FM 104-Dire Dublin radio station presented by annoying 30somethings making shite mother in law jokes and talking about fuck all in the middle of particularly bad pop music. 2. Today FM-Same as above until 7 when good(ish) alternative shows start and go on till 10 or so. Sadly I'm never in the car between 7 and 10 anyway. 3. 98FM-No 30somethings or shit jokes just lots of iffy phone ins and painfully shite music. I'm talking lowest of the low here. I flick around through all the stations but I never ever ever stop here. why the fuck is it even preset in the car? I blame my brother and the lack of choice on Irish radio. 4. 2FM-Middling average pop music all day, the chance of the odd decent pop song. good alternative show from 8pm to 10pm. never listen to it much anymore though. 5. Phantom FM-"indie" pirate radio station based in Dublin. Tries to promote a local scene that is worse than the worst indie bands you can think of. Just like Hot Press, No Disco, every other Irish music programme they build stuff up and fool themselves (and lots of idiots) into thinking it's good because they're patriotic or something, I dunno. Trrrust me, Irish music=complete shite. avoid. In fact this is probably worse than all the other ones because the djs are fucking dorks with fake american accents who make crap indie jokes and AAAAAAAAAAARGH I'm not going to work myself up anymore. They play the odd Pixies or SFA or someone so it can be ok. but grrrrrr.

6. Freedom FM-Pirate pop station, very few ads, djs sound like the sort of people who offer you heroin in Temple Bar except for one who is a friend of mine and the initial reason I started listening to this station. good pop music, good(ish) dance music, takes request, pretty big station, usually the best of the 6.

kxlu 88.9 local college radio station, it's a good one
kcrw 89.9 local NPR yupster "eclectic" adult soft hits, to make me angry, plus Harry Shearer and Joe Frank on Sundays!
klon 88.1 local jass station, not very good
kpwr 106 where hip hop lives, yo
kroq 106.7 alternative hits! modern rock! keeps me in touch w/ the kids!

As someone pointed out on another thread, it would be nice to have a station that played the real top 40--hip hop, Britney, Tool, country, all of it--as determined by science. I'm not holding my breath.

dan, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Which leads me to the discussion: why is radio so rubbish in the UK? I can think of the odd hour here and there I like (e.g. Late Junction on Radio 3, the mellow dance session [the name of which escapes me] on XFM, John Peel, plus Mark and Lard are quite funny) but generally I feel hard pushed to think of a radio station I'm happy to keep tuned to. What went wrong?

Daniel, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I listen to Sara Cox relayed in the mornings by a Dublin pirate station and trust me if you think Radio is bad over with you guys you should come here. There hasn't been a new Irish DJ in years, they all just swap stations every now and again.

Ronan, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Uh, exactly the same as Dan Regan--minus the jazz station--and for all the same reasons. Also, I have 97.1 Talk Radio for Howard Stern, but I haven't been able to listen to him since Sept. 11th. And a classical station, somewhere. And on AM I have Radio Disney and some Superhits of the 30s, 40s and 50s station. I can't remember the call letters, though.

Arthur, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Arthur has lovely taste.

dan, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, likewise, I'm sure, fer shur.

Arthur, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Both of you would *MUCH* rather be listening to KUCI 88.8 FM, though, wouldn't you? Yes you would. Therefore, please break into KXLU one night and force them to broadcast us instead.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

88.9 FM, even. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

well, i actually do a show there, and the wattage is actually 14,000. not bad for a college station - you can pretty much hear it throughout new jersey and into philadelphia on a good day. dammit. heh.
