Based on this bit of "wisdom" from the mind of Kris P.:

- Indie rock is perhaps the only genre with a higher rating on the gay-o-meter than electronica. No talent, emaciated little queers who hack away at their instruments in a half-assed fashion and write songs that are either about "feelings" or...well...nothing at all really.

For decades, music discussions have always involved The Gay-o-Meter. It's time that we pull the Gay-o-Meter out of the darkness of its closet and discuss this mysterious (device|mental construct|set of rules) directly.
So, ILM, where does different genres fit in the Gay-o-Meter heirarchy?
Is heavy metal automatically less "gay" than classic rock, even with Rob Halford's Leatherman costume?
Is folk "gayer" than disco or vice versa.

I deejayed a queer college party last weekend, and it was funny. The actual gay people were into my selections of M.I.A., The Blow, Le Tigre, !!!, Soft Pink Truth, alongside the standard chart pop ("Toxic" etc) and had some interesting, relatively obscure requests (electric six, gravy train). Meanwhile the annoying straight sorority girls who showed up wanted to hear stupid campy "gay" music ("I will survive", "it's raining men") and dismissed the Outhud track i played as "weird trance".

The Gay-o-Meter probably wouldn't work here in Miami, which probably ranks with San Francisco or NYC as gay friendliest city. At the local indie club, frequented more often these days by Abercrombie South Beach club types, the straight boys dance (sometimes quite fetchingly) with their gay pals to Electric Six without any self-consciousness. It's like the Franz Ferdinand song "Michael' without the drama.

I always think of really boring, tasteful stuff as the "gayest." Coldplay, Lucinda Williams, etc. Anything that's a musical version of NPR. That's where I think you'll find the highest proportion of actual gay listeners.

This doesn't factor in that most of the male goths I've met are bolthead harley bikers during the daytime. And what about the suave, charming Andrew Eldridge wannabes who always leave the gig with a chica on each arm?
