if we were to take them as being polar opposites of the mainstram-undie divide? what artists help form the bridge, and why?

lil jon - mannie fresh - jay-z - wu tang clan - missy elliot - kanye west - cannibal ox - jurrassic five - buck 65

lil jon --> david banner --> bubba sparxxx --> buck 65

four steps (and the second one might not even be necessary)!

xhuxk, Monday, 9 May 2005 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Second one isn't at all (obv Petey Pablo would be the better step if one WAS necessary.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 9 May 2005 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

or okay, here's seven:

lil jon -> david banner -> bubba sparxxx -> cowboy troy -> roger miller -> tom t. hall --> buck 65

xhuxk, Monday, 9 May 2005 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

1. Lil Jon was on “Let’s Go” with Trick Daddy
2. On the same album Trick Daddy copped a Talking Heads B-side on “Sugar” with Cee-Lo Green
3. Cee-Lo Green was on “What U Sittin On” remix by Danger Mouse And Jemini (and teams with DM this summer as Gnarls Barkley)
4. Danger Mouse does some production on the new album by Sage Francis
5. Sage Francis guest-raps on four tracks on DJ Signify’s goth-hop opus Sleep No More
6. … an album which also features Buck 65

lil jon -> andrew wk -> wolf eyes --> einsturzende neubauten -- > nick cave --> tom waits --> buck 65

xhuxk, Monday, 9 May 2005 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

how close do you really think the connection between cowboy troy and roger miller is? Now the connection between Black Sheep and Roger Miller...

"Engine Engine number nine, on the new york transit line."

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Monday, 9 May 2005 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha ha, probably not very close, but they DID both have country-rap hits about chicken! ("My mother used to love me but she died/Can't eat chicken unless it's chicken good fried," or however it goes.) I was going to say Jerry Reed or Charlie Daniels instead, but I thought Roger Miller was funnier. (Maybe I should've said Commander Cody??)

xhuxk, Monday, 9 May 2005 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh wait, it's my UNCLE used to love me but she died, etc. duh:

My uncle used to love but she died
A chicken ain't chicken 'til he's licken good and fried
Keep on the sunny side
My uncle used to love me but she died

who'll bid me quarter, thirty cents for a ring of keys
three sixty-five for a dollar bill of groceries
I'll have me a car of my own someday but 'til then I need a ride (thanks Steve)
my uncle used to love me but she died

My uncle used to love but she died
A chicken ain't chicken 'til he's licken good and fried
Keep on the sunny side
My uncle used to live me but she died

Hamburger cup of coffee lettuce and tomato
two times a dime to see a man kiss the alligater
one more time around free on the ferris wheel ride
my uncle used to love me but she died

My uncle used to love but she died
A chicken ain't chicken 'til he's licken good and fried
Keep on the sunny side
My uncle used to live me but she died

Apples are for eatin and snakes are for hissin
I've heard about a'huggin and I've heard about kissin
I read about it free in a fifty cent illustrated guide
My uncle used to love me but she died

My uncle used to love but she died
A chicken ain't chicken 'til he's licken good and fried
Keep on the sunny side
My uncle used to live me but she died

Well my uncle used to love but she died
A chicken ain't chicken 'til he's licken good and fried
Keep on the sunny side
My uncle used to live me but she died

No man is Roger Miller, chuck.

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Monday, 9 May 2005 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Well...the Roger Miller in Mission of Burma was Roger Miller! (But he doesn't count, I know.)

xhuxk, Monday, 9 May 2005 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Lil Jon and 50 Cent (Anger Management Tour)
50 Cent and John Travolta (“Disco Inferno”)
John Travolta was also in Carrie
Buck 65 sampled Carrie on “Centaur”

JFish, Monday, 9 May 2005 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Lil Jon (enjoys cake) --> Buck 65 (enjoys cake).

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 9 May 2005 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually taking this seriously now (sorry):

Buck 65 did “Follow Me” with Sage Francis
who did “Orphanage Freestyle Part I” with Aesop Rock
who did “Blacklist” with MF Doom
who (as Zev Love X) did “Nitty Gritty Remix” with Busta Rhymes
who did “Get Low Remix” with Lil’ Jon

JFish, Monday, 9 May 2005 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I always meant to ask this question: if you were doing a hip-hop version of the Kevin Bacon game based on appearing on tracks together, who is the hip-hop Kevin Bacon?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 9 May 2005 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

James Brown, sorta.

Has Lil Jon done something with Andrew WK? If that's the case, oh boy I gotta hear that.

Nick H (Nick H), Monday, 9 May 2005 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Lil John is in To Live and Shave in LA now.

You can skip the Orphanage part, Sage has a track with Doom ("Doomage" on "Sickly Business"). So it's 4 steps.

And I think there's an even shorter way, just can't figure it out right now.

Guy Incognito (Guy Incognito), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 00:37 (twenty-one years ago)

and Buck 65 is really the hardest example since he isn't really big on collabs.
the key to most of the indie-mainstream connections would be Jedi Mind Tricks (who did songs with Ras Kass, GZA, Killah Priest) and El-P (w/Ghostface)... and also Rhymefest writing Kanye's Jesus Walks if that counts, etc.

Guy Incognito (Guy Incognito), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Why would you want to go from Lil Jon to Buck 65.

Zed Szetlian (Finn MacCool), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 01:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Sage has a track with Doom
Not so fast! Doom doesn't rhyme on this track, he just did the beat.

I don't know...maybe for the same reason that I would want to crawl out of a collapsed septic tank and onto the lawn.

So that doesn't count? Dang.
