The Brainwasher (Twilight), Monday, 9 May 2005 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

They are certainly one of the greatest bands ever.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 May 2005 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Much as I disagree with the notion of a G.O.A.T., they are one of the very few I could make a serious argument for.

brianiac (briania), Monday, 9 May 2005 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

DENY NOT THE GOAT!

minimalandcynicaland, Monday, 9 May 2005 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Can't decide if I was relieved or disappointed at not finding Mr. Goatse upon clicking that link.

brianiac (briania), Monday, 9 May 2005 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

imma call bullshit on GOAT, but they are definitely in the top echelon.

peter smith (plsmith), Monday, 9 May 2005 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

this gives me an idea!

peter smith (plsmith), Monday, 9 May 2005 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't get the Buzzcocks so much. I only ever had the Singles Going Steady comp, but I sold it a long time ago! I suppose I'd keep it now if I had it. I think "Ever Fallen in Love" is a really good song, but something like "Orgasm Addict" just kind of sounds like a little bit better tham mediocre punk rock novelty song to me.

There were so many good English bands from this period. I can't imagine that I'd take any of the songs on Singles Going Steady over, say, "Alternative Ulster" by Stiff Little Fingers, just to name the first thing that comes to mind.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 9 May 2005 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

You're dead to me now, Tim Ellison. Take your Ringo Starr solo records and go.

Ken L (Ken L), Monday, 9 May 2005 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Buzzocks are great, but it was just like Roky E: as much as I like their records, they'll never be *my* band, the one that defines my taste/me or whatever. That doesn't make sense, I know, but I just love other bands more. Singles Going Steady should be in everyone's record collection though, what a great record.

nathalie in a bar under the sea (stevie nixed), Monday, 9 May 2005 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sorry, Ken. I wouldn't mind hearing that album again. Maybe there are some other great ones on it that I am forgetting. Don't think "Orgasm Addict" is one of them, though, personally.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 9 May 2005 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Not sure if ever but SGS is my favourite album of the 70s.

Nick H (Nick H), Monday, 9 May 2005 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, Tim, If all you ever had was singles going steady then you missed when they started dropping acid and got weird! For real!

But, anyway, yeah, one of my all-time faves.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 9 May 2005 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

They're great of course, but I'll take Wire over the Buzzcocks any day.

Sasha (sgh), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 02:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Y'know "Alternative Ulster"'s better than any Buzzcocks song I know (except "Why Can't I Touch It" maybe)

A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 02:26 (twenty-one years ago)

"Alternative Ulster" and "Suspect Device" are about as good as anything on Singles Going Steady - but SGS has 16 tracks of that goodness vs. only those two.

I don't think there's a mediocre track on the original SGS (the Euro remaster CD has eight bonus tracks that I haven't really listened to).

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 02:35 (twenty-one years ago)

this gives me an idea!

-- peter smith (reesewitherspoo...), May 9th, 2005 4:05 PM. (plsmith)

yes, go on

Amon (eman), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 02:36 (twenty-one years ago)

If I wanted to collect the original 45s collected on SGS would it cost me an ungodly fortune? Reissues would be fine if they exist.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 02:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah SLFingers pretty much blow otherwise

A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 05:12 (twenty-one years ago)

They're great of course, but I'll take Wire over the Buzzcocks any day.

The Buzzcocks are *one of* the greatest ever, that's obvious. Reasons for greatness :

1) at least 3 eras of absolute brilliance : a) Devoto-era sarcastic youthclub punk racket b)the pop era from 'What Do I Get' until 'Harmony In Your Head'. b) the short experimental era including (parts of) A Different Kind Of Tension and the 3 post-ADKOT singles

2) the run of 7 singles from WDIG to HIMH is as good as any 7 by The Beatles, The Kinks, The Pet Shop Boys, The Supremes, The Smiths...

3) like all great singles bands they didn't sound quite like anyone else, and were instantly recognizable on the radio. Great singles bands need at least one visual and one sonic trademark hook (e.g The Beatles head-shaking 'yeeeahs'). The 'Cocks had the 'oh-o-o-o-h' backing vocals and Pete's sideways glances away from the mike on TV)

4) Pete Shelley's camp wail.

5) John Maher's drumming.

6)The weren't afraid to experiment and deviate from a winning formula. This made for great B-sides (Something's Gone Wrong Again, Why Can't I Touch It, Autonomy) and album tracks (..Pulsebeat, Late For The Train, Love is Lies)

7) Shelley's ability to mate buzzsaw punk propulsion with classic unrequieted love/loss/lust themes. Just listen to 'I Don't Mind' - it could have been written by Smokey Robinson or Holland Dozier Holland.

8)Even their comeback era is good - alright the classics are harder to find, but they're there - 369, Crystal Night, Your Love, Jerk, Soul On A Rock.

To compare them to SLF is insane - SLF are halfway decent second gen punk chancers who had 2 and a bit decent songs. They were redundant after the first album.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 07:49 (twenty-one years ago)

And got a journalist, who was the same age then as I am now, to write their lyrics for them.

The Buzzcocks with Devoto have a great claim to be the greatest band ever. But then, so do Magazine.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 07:59 (twenty-one years ago)

But even Shelley's Buzzcocks were a thing of wonder - three immaculate albums, three straight years of faultless singles. I remember when Tony Parsons made "What Do I Get?" his single of the week in NME and called it the greatest love song written since the days of Smokey Robinson. Then I heard Paul Burnett play it on Radio 1 at lunchtime on the same day and I thought YES HE'S RIGHT!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 08:01 (twenty-one years ago)

What the Doc and Marcello said.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 08:27 (twenty-one years ago)

When the product box came out, it was a "CD or LP" debate. Plumped for the LP set.

To which I added 12" versions of Spiral Scratch and the 'hits' EP, and now it looks and feels like a paving slab.

I never heared "Org Ad" at the time, so never felt it as keenly as 'you lot' but the rest (singles) were the ones I grew up with.

I had "kitchen", the version without "I need", so that too.

I 'discovered' the wonders of "Love Bites" and "tension" from this box.

Oh look, I'm going "Classic" wahay...

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 08:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Tension might be my favourite record. Side 2 is definitely my favourite side 2.

There was a version of Kitchen without 'I Need'???

I am now listening to 'Chronology' - some wonderful unreleased stuff on there - Running Away From Home, Jesus Made Me Feel Guilty and No Friend Of Mine (actually the latter is Steve Garvey and Karl Burns only).

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 08:55 (twenty-one years ago)

i made this post so i agree.

blahbarian, Tuesday, 10 May 2005 10:48 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost except for M of T

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 11:58 (twenty-one years ago)

whenever i pull out the vinyl box-set i end up playing the whole thing. i can't stop myself. those drums and guitars are, and always have been, really really addictive to me. i confess that i haven't really payed that much attention to the revival/reunion records.
