Sounds like Nicolette's "Dove Song" and Soho (aka Pal Joey)'s "Hot Music"

not even really sure what genre either of these would be filed in. they're early - mid 90s electronic, sample based music but both have really strange rhythms, not really house nor jungle.

i know nicolette was produced by Shut Up & Dance, but i don't know much about them besides what i've read on ILM and AMG.

and don't know much about Pal Joey. the "Hot Music" track is easily recognizable as the loop in that one K-os track.

are there good albums/comps i can find a bunch of this stuff on? other good singles like this.

file them under dance.

A Homeboy, A Hippie & A Funki Dredd - 'Total Confusion (Confusion Mix)' (1990)

Eon - 'Basket Case (Black Coat Mix)' / 'Spice' (1992)

Depth Charge - 'Shaolin Buddha Finger' (1994)

I guess a lot of this stuff is just called breakbeat?

Here's a yousendit of the 'Basket Case' so you can see if I'm on the right tracks:

Also, the B-side of 'Hot Music' was Earth People's 'Dance', which is fantastic, though not really in the same style. Their 'Reach Up To Mars' maybe is more, but it's still house.

Okay, I need to know more about Pal Joey. Classic or Dud? I just picked up a copy of Mothers Day/Fathers Day, I lovin' it. Very Nu Groove.

what sounds like "hot music", specifically? so jazzy and snazzy yet kinda ruff and rugged

"Hot Music" is 1989, and "Dove Song" is 1992, not mid-90s. Both predate jungle.

Other jazz-break electronic stuff from that era that could fit off the top of my head:

Innerzone Orchestra (Carl Craig) - Bug in the Bassbin (1992)

Nuyorican Soul (Masters At Work) - The Nervous Track (1993)

Other dope Pal Joey stuff:

Runaway (1990) featuring the same Roy Ayers loop A Tribe Called Quest had recently used for "Description of a Fool"

Spend the Night (1991)
