An anthology of all the shit ILM's been hyping for the past 6 months

For one week I get a computer with unlimited downloading and burning capabilities, and then I'm back to the domain of the luddites. What's all this shit you guys have been going apeshit for?

I like rap that's catchy and weird mainsteam and undie (but not undie if it's too wordy), super duper extreme death metal, left field "what the hell is this?" stuff, and then most of the ilx touchstones, old post punk, prog, psych, rockabilly, blue eyed soul, hall and oates, y'know. Actually I should just clarify that I don't really like anything that sounds like Shania Twain or Jet, but other than that I'm open.

Restless detached arm, Tuesday, 10 May 2005 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Funnily enough we've been raving about the Shania/Jet collaboration "Rock Me Like a Man, Woman."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned and I have been going round and round about this. It's actually called 'Rock Your Baby in the Rocking Chair'. And it's a dud, no matter what the others say.

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Devin The Dude - To Tha X-Treme

if you didn't get that already. Super laid back summer hiphop album. Really catchy.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think this is specifically limited to ILM, but I have seen things about Edan "Beauty and the Beat" (sounds like really cool hip hop, from what I've heard), of course the M.I.A. album "Arular," and the new Spoon is very good, too - "Gimme Fiction."

Dave M (Dave M), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

someone make that happen!

(the bun b & a.c.)

b b, Tuesday, 10 May 2005 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Shania Twain's 'I'm Gonna Get Ya Good', unless it is called 'I'm Gonna Getcha Good', in which case I like that.

ILM seems queer to me these days. It seems focused on things to do with computers, as well as (as always) taking place on computers (I do not mean the two to be confounded).

the bellefox, Tuesday, 10 May 2005 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

rolls eyes comically

Norsist.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I don’t think anyone else has mentioned it, but I really really like Fog’s new album 10th Avenue Freakout.

Orange, Tuesday, 10 May 2005 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Edan "Beauty and the Beat"

Yeah, I saw this on pfork, not so much on ILM. I like it.

sleep (sleep), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I guss I have no idea what non-wordy rap is supposed to mean.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Open Hand - You & Me. It's like Failure: The Wonder Years.

Restless detached arm, am I to understand you like everything but country and teenie pop? I am afraid I don't have any recommendations for you in that case, unless it's techno you're after.

I have been listening to my old Heiko Laux records. A LOT.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 01:35 (twenty-one years ago)

las escarlatinas, but you should buy it because the cover is pretty.

keith m (keithmcl), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 02:32 (twenty-one years ago)

ONE THING

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 02:34 (twenty-one years ago)

D/L Tory Alamaze "Don't Cha".
Listen repeatedly.
Swoon.

Baaderonixxxorzh (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 06:43 (twenty-one years ago)

-- sleep (enemy.airshi...), May 10th, 2005.

I saw it on cokemachineglow too. Not that it is ILM. They always seem to be one step ahead of pitchfork though, and they always hype the stuff I really want hyped and self-consciously, which is nice.

x-post: Is it just me or does that song sound like The Go! Team. It's awesome. I was sampling the album at Virgin and it sounds pretty good across the board. Is it?

No, by Shania I meant roughly commercial country of the past whatever years, and by Jet I meant basically whatever mainstream (and for the most part indie) rock has been doing for the past say 5 to 10 years.

I have nothing against teenie pop.

Relentless detached arm, Wednesday, 11 May 2005 12:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha I read that as "The Jets"!

I think the ILM "consensus," if it could be distilled, is that commercial country has IN GENERAL been kicking "indie" country's ass by a country mile for the past, well, whatever years. Although generality is the enemy of art. Which actually has something to do with why alt.country has sucked so direly. But I could get, and we have gotten, specific about this.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 13 May 2005 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

D/L Tory Alamaze "Don't Cha".

->only if you're willing to stay in your room and listen to this on repeat for three days straight. it's that good.

nathalie's baby (stevie nixed), Friday, 13 May 2005 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I dont like indie country either, for the record. Does it blow your mind that I could possibly just NOT like the sound of mainstream country? Dont like the production values, dont like the lyrics, dont like any of it?

restless detached god, Tuesday, 17 May 2005 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

>I don't really like anything that sounds like Shania Twain or Jet<

Then DEFINITELY do not buy any albums by Def Leppard, for God's sake!
