David Garibaldi & Talking Drum

(I was really tired, and it was so soothing and hypnotic)

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 00:31 (twenty-one years ago)

As I never tire of saying: Godspeed You Black Emperor. Six feet from the stage. STANDING UP. Fuck those clowns.

Also, Spiritualized at the height of their Laser Floyd incarnation after Let It Come Down. Thankfully that has since changed.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 00:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Whoever the opening act was for a jam-rock-with-electric-violin band called Zox at the Tribeca Music Hall, about a year ago. I had no business being at the show, I was so exhausted, but someone woke me in time for the main act, which was great.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 00:33 (twenty-one years ago)

low, la salle university with ida & mick turner, circa 1997.

cherry valence, cats cradle, 2003? actually, ive fallen asleep at the cats cradle numerous times.

also, a slew of plain parade shows on slow nights.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 00:35 (twenty-one years ago)

karlheinz stockhausen, ryuichi sakamoto, zoviet france and rapoon all of which had me blissfully dozing off.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 00:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Godspeed You Black Emperor w/ Mogwai in Philadelphia. Went with friends. Left with 4 fewer friends.

tompaulin w/ the great lakes

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 00:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Black Dice

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 00:38 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost hahah. (I mean, I love Mogwai, but I can see how that headliner would be poisonous.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 00:38 (twenty-one years ago)

art of fighting (i was unwell), joe pernice (tremendous lack of sleep) and the go betweens (late late show, they came on at nearly 2am-ish, also lack of sleep)

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 00:42 (twenty-one years ago)

one time jeff mills was dj'ing in edinburgh and was so loud that he literally set the monitors on fire. i couldn't find my then girlfriend all night until the music ended and i noticed something moving amongst all the coats beneath the decks and realised she had slept right through it. that pretty much said all that could be said about her dislike of banging techno.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 00:45 (twenty-one years ago)

My then-girlfriend fell asleep at a DJ Spooky show several years ago. I married her anyway.

space2k (space2k), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 01:00 (twenty-one years ago)

smashing pumpkins (on the mellon collie tour) during simply epic noodlefest. zz.

stet (stet), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 01:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Tortoise (the Millions Now Living tour). Good show, just lack of sleep and a long drive that day. I woke up in time for "Grazin' in the Grass."

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 01:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Art Ensemble of Chicago, Bumbershoot in Seattle, 1997. I enjoyed it, though!

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 01:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Ramones during Escape from New York Tour

they were great, i was exhausted and it sort of became white noise like and helped me drift off

H (Heruy), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 01:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Weezer in '03;
Tenacious D opened up,
that's all we went for

also, Sigur Ros
at the Barrymore that year,
twenty-minute drone

Haikunym (Haikunym), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

pan am/low @ kilby court. it was really crowded and hot and we were all sitting down so it was pretty easy to doze off. low were great that night, though

6335, Wednesday, 11 May 2005 01:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Me three for GYBE -- and I'm a big fan! And I dozed off at *two* of their shows, once on my feet, and once at a sit-down gig they played in a theatre. Generally, sit-down shows + sleep + me are close acquaintances.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 02:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Loop, CBGB's, 1990. Then Jesus Lizard came on and woke me the fuck back up.

Bugskull, Satyricon, Portland OR, 1995. I'd been traveling for 3 days with almost no sleep; they were pleasantly lulling.

mike a, Wednesday, 11 May 2005 02:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd never fallen asleep at a concert until Bridge School Benefit, October 2004...but there were extenuating circumstances. It rained ALL afternoon, and ALL night. Even with garbage bags & wet weather gear, we got wet, cold & miserable very quickly. Husband got in a bad way with some mixed beverages, wound up sleeping it off over at Rock Med. He missed RHCP & Tony Bennett, got back for Neil Young's second set. By then I was even colder, and more miserable than before. We kind of huddled together to stay warm, and before I knew it we were both fast asleep. Woke up at the end of Neil's set, decided it was too fucking cold & miserable to sit out Sir Paul, so we hightailed it home.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 02:26 (twenty-one years ago)

beastie boys/rollins band (? i think)/lench mob, roseland, sometime when i was in high school. fuck but it was boring -- my first taste of completely stultifying testosterone. i was downstairs when it happened, me and my black and magenta rucksack.

also i fell asleep in the kroq couchy area of the first coachella, just as underworld was starting. people gaped at me. not the first time, of course.

oh! and i fell asleep at a show where slant 6 was the headliner. it was at the metro in chicago; i think the smoothies were one of the opening bands, and i have a feeling i fell asleep during their set.

i'm sure there were more. i'm something of a narcoleptic, you see.

maura (maura), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 02:35 (twenty-one years ago)

alan licht! a little beauty sleep right in front of the stage was needed in order for maximum rocking out to the dead c.

etc, Wednesday, 11 May 2005 02:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Richard Buckner, Silk City, Philadelphia, 1997.

At the end of a long-ass day, but dammit, he was boring.

JAS, Wednesday, 11 May 2005 02:59 (twenty-one years ago)

E.A.R. 1993ish (sorry Sonic, you know i lurve you)

Orbit (Orbit), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 03:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Yume Bitsu, various shows in Seattle. For awhile, they'd open for every K show in town. I learned to start arriving late.

mike a, Wednesday, 11 May 2005 03:01 (twenty-one years ago)

wow, where'd you fall asleep at silk city??

maura (maura), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 03:02 (twenty-one years ago)

ahmad jamal, 1998...I was 15, I was really tired, and I was sitting down in a theatre for an hour. sue me, jazzbo.

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 03:11 (twenty-one years ago)

no but i mean ... where in the venue? it's not like there are many places to do that. you know? i am impressed. and so not a jazzbo.

maura (maura), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 03:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i always fall alseep when i go to jazz shows, especially at Fat Cat.. they've got all those pillows.. dangerous.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 03:40 (twenty-one years ago)

the worst part is that for a good 5, 10 minutes before i fell completely asleep in my chair, i was in that pseudo-sleep state where my head just made these horrible, overdramatic swoopes and dips as i faded in and out. the friend who took me with her was incredibly embarrassed, and told me afterwards that many of our fellow concertgoers were staring at me indignantly during this period. WHY DIDN'T SHE WAKE ME UP? Damn it.

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 03:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i fell asleep while watching 'kingdom of heaven' this past weekend. never at a gig. suddenly the leper was dead.

keith m (keithmcl), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 03:47 (twenty-one years ago)

When I was a kid, my dad and uncle used to take me to concerts. John Waite/Scandal and the Joe Perry-less Aerosmith are two I'm sure I didn't make it all the way through.

Mike Dixn (Mike Dixon), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 03:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I feel asleep during a Genesis concert in the late eighties. Also, during Sonic Youth when they opened for the Beastie Boys. (After a long drive, and no sleep, it was all just noise to me).

Bobby Peru (Bobby Peru), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 05:05 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not so much a "gig," but I once fell asleep during the Saturday midnight showing of The Rocky Horror Picture Show in Harvard Square. No explanation whatsoever.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 05:10 (twenty-one years ago)

cat power at the warsaw a few years back. i just sat on the ground, laid against the wall and snoozed. granted I still love her albums ...but I'll never go see her again

breezy, Wednesday, 11 May 2005 05:15 (twenty-one years ago)

this improv group in SF called Mire. when i woke up i actually felt quite refreshed and realized i really enjoyed the show.

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 05:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Echo & The Bunnymen at the London Lyceum, 1980. I woke up again during A Certain Ratio's first number.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 07:11 (twenty-one years ago)

A Coelacanth show (duo of Jim Haynes and Loren Chasse) didnt put me all the way to sleep put brought me in and out of The Zone about 7 times- that sudden swoop into sleep and then headsnapping awakeness- it was incredibly entrancing, subtle music. A great show.

Something a bit like this happened at the Zoviet France show I saw too.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 07:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I fell asleep to that band with the song which sampled the "Countdown Theme" who John Peel liked - they were a "wacky" lo-fi-dance act around about 2000.

Anyone remember the name?

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 08:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I fell asleep during the band that supported JOMF on their European jaunt a couple of years ago. I was snoring quite loudly, apparently, and it was a really small (and not hugely attended) venue.

Also, Dead Meadow at ATP last year.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 08:41 (twenty-one years ago)

motorhead a few years back. my friend was upfront taping so i went to go get a pizza in the lobby and sat on the steps to eat it and fell asleep after consuming. i snuck up to the balcony and watched the rest of the set while getting high

kephm, Wednesday, 11 May 2005 08:51 (twenty-one years ago)

A Primal Scream 'all-nighter' at Brixton Academy, standing up.

Buffalo Stan (Buffalo Stan), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 08:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Oasis at Maine Road, yonks ago. dull dull dull.

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 09:21 (twenty-one years ago)

"As I never tire of saying: Godspeed You Black Emperor. Six feet from the stage. STANDING UP. Fuck those clowns"

Ha! my friend Elisa actually fell asleep during their set.

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 09:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I fell asleep at a RC Mob/ Replacements show... I was dead tired from working on very little sleep, it was really fucking hot in there, and I was with two of the most boring people ever.

diedre mousedropping and a quarter (Dave225), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 10:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Can I just say, that one of my friends fell asleep to ESG when they played the other weekend?

ESG! SLEEP! WTFFFF!

Lucretia My Reflection (Lucretia My Reflection), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 10:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Pretenders, early 80s: Was there to interview the Alarm. They were taping the Pretenders show for HBO (I think), and I'm pretty sure that was me asleep in the front row, off to the side.

The Dbs, also early 80s. Again, was there to interview them. Long day, not a very dynamic band.

peepee (peepee), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 10:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I fell asleep to that band with the song which sampled the "Countdown Theme" who John Peel liked - they were a "wacky" lo-fi-dance act around about 2000.
Anyone remember the name?

You're not thinking of the Cuban Boys are you? 'Hamster Dance' and all that?

I dozed off lying on the floor in front of NNCK and had lots of odd dreams. Everyone there seemed to be in and out of consciousness the whole time anyhow, band included. That was a strange and great and unreal gig, but don't ask me to explain it at all.

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 10:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Sonic Youth (playing under the pseudonym, "Sonic Death") at the old Knitting Factory (E.Houston between Mott & Mulberry). Fell asleep standing up. Lost complete interest in them after that.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 11:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Porcupine Tree at Shepherds Bush, we were supporting I was tired from driving and I went upstairs and fell asleep somewhere in the balcony for 20 mins.

mzui (mzui), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

roger waters
tool

AaronK (AaronK), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Fell asleep in the corner of an Out Hud show at the Knit.

Recently, my band played with Mouthus, a noise band on Thurston Moore's label... They're pretty good, but 3 weeks of touring had left me pretty exhausted. So i pass out on a couch in this big dark warehouse in Oakland, lit by a single lightbulb.

Once they were done, i was still happily dozing in the corner. I woke up to the entire room laughing at me... apparantly it was our turn to play and my bandmates had been screaming and searching for me--my earplugs were in so i couldn't hear them, and the room was so dark, they couldn't see me snoozing on the couch.

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 12:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, and my moms fell asleep at a Joe Cocker concert.

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 12:04 (twenty-one years ago)

maura, silk city's couches are the venus flytraps of show snoozing. i think ive passed out during a dj night or two there. ive definitely falled asleep upstairs at the khyber.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 12:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Tortoise (the Millions Now Living tour). Good show, just lack of sleep and a long drive that day. I woke up in time for "Grazin' in the Grass."

Ha, Tortoise played Grazin'? I'd love to hear that.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 12:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Spiriualized - playing stufff from 'Ladies and Gentlemen... ' at Glastonbury 1998. Standing up that one.

Regular Fries - another festival moment in 1998. I was sitting in the dance tent on a pile of hay at V Festival with some friends. Woke up about an hour later to find all eight of us had burrowed into the hay and fallen asleep like mice in a nest.

Low (was it? No idea really) - All Tomorrows Parties, 2002. Actually maybe this says more about how I take on festivals than the bands themselves?

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 12:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha, Tortoise played Grazin'? I'd love to hear that.

It was fun. Trumpet part on melodica, if I remember correctly. It was near the end of the show, possibly during the encore, and they suddenly switched from stern-dour to hyuk-hyuk-hyuk and wave-your-hands-in-the-air.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 12:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to do this all the time in college. I think I once managed to fall asleep while Fugazi was playing .

Lyra Jane (Lyra Jane), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Just last week I fell asleep at The Books concert - we got there way too early so when 1:30 rolled around and they were still on stage, I pooped out. What I heard was great though.

ève, Wednesday, 11 May 2005 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Ever Fallen Asleep At A Show?

john'n'chicago, Wednesday, 11 May 2005 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Murcof. Last summer. A pleasant little nap.

Kaiser of Köln (Kaiser of Köln), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, yes, The Cuban Boys that was them, cheers Nick.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 12:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Interpol.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 12:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Too lulling.

Years earlier, Rush/REO Speedwagon. Too sucky.

Daniel Peterson (polkaholic), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 13:12 (twenty-one years ago)

wow, where'd you fall asleep at silk city??
-- maura (maur...), May 11th, 2005.

At a table right behind the railing, IIRC.

Now that I think of it, I also got sleepy while seeing the Hang Ups (whom I like) at the same venue, around the same time frame. They weren't the most exciting live band I've ever seen, but then again, that was the only other time I'd ever been in Silk City. Maybe they should've called it Sleep City instead. . .

JAS, Wednesday, 11 May 2005 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I dozed off at a Frank Zappa concert, 1988 (I went through a Zappa phase in early high school). If not for the uncomfortable wooden bleachers where I was sitting, it would have been a full-on snorefest.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Does church count as a gig?

deej., Wednesday, 11 May 2005 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Mogwai, 2001.

Borbetomagus, No Fun Fest this year. It was 3 am and I'd already been at the festival for like 6 hours (and 5 hours the previous day), so I was really exhausted.

+, Wednesday, 11 May 2005 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I fell asleep while Pit er Pat were playing but I had a cold.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Yo La Tengo, Tramps, NYC, about 5 years ago. Those 10-minute songs (there were more than 2) where the bassist plays those slow 3-note progressions, facing his amp, while Ira just noodles on his guitar or piano. I'll never go see them again.

57 7th (calstars), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 13:25 (twenty-one years ago)

The Cure @ Coachella 2004.
Boooooring stuff.

elgolfo (elgolfo), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Excepter

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Ash Ra Tempel, Royal Festival Hall, 2000. They played the spaciest of space rock and projected the stars onto the ceiling. That I was lulled into sleep was a credit to them I think.

Bidfurd, Wednesday, 11 May 2005 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

The Damned, Dundee University 1986, alcohol may have played a part.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I've fallen asleep at every show I've ever been to with lawn seats.

Dozed off seeing Richie Hawtin after the first 3 hours.

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Charlatans at the Showbox in 200? Jesus, they've fallen far since Up to Our Hips...missed the heart of the show snoozing in the booths in the back...didn't go home because i wanted to (and did) catch Sprotson Green. Predictable Encores can be quite pleasing.

biz, Wednesday, 11 May 2005 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

haha ned, i fell asleep at at least five early godspeed loft show gigs!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Jesus and Mary Chain, the Arches, Glasgow 1995. Taking about 24 sleepless hours to hitch up from Glastonbury the day before may have contributed more than a little to this.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Magnetic Fields, Wetlands?, '95, NYC. I went to see Polvo who played last and I could sense that I was getting tired and I definitely didn't want to fall asleep during Polvo so I turned around from my front row, center position and dropped to the floor and fell asleep leaning against the stage. It was actually quite pleasant and I'm *pretty sure* that noone in the band saw me so I don't think anyone felt snubbed.

Superchunk or Sebadoh, '92, CBGBs, NYC. It was during a marathon lineup of Luna, Superchunk, Sebadoh, Polvo and some local band. I was sitting in one of the booths and kept fading in and out of sleep. Very comfortable.

Orchids, '92, some club in London. Again, I was tired and wanted to see the headlining band (heavenly) so I slept through half there set.

EMF, '91, some club in NYC. A friend gave me a free ticket and I went to see the opening bands (cop shoot cop, Carter the unstoppable sex machine). EMF were boring so I slept instead.

Wedding Present, '96, some club in San Francisco. Flew to SF for a long weekend partially so I could see them play as they weren't coming to portland. I foolishly pulled an all-nighter the night before the show since I had a very early flight and what's the point of sleeping at all if you have to get up at 4:30? Then through miscommunication I wasn't able to meet up with the person I was staying with in SF so I had to wander the streets all day until the show rather than go back to his place beforehand to take a nap and recharge. I was front and center at the show and I swear my eyes were open but I was so delirious I barely remember a thing.

ianinportland (ianinportland), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I went under during Low's set opening for Radiohead at Madison Square Garden a couple of years ago. Radiohead must have been under the influence of their openers, because they were as dull as dry dogshit, too. We (my wife and I) left early.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

The Dismemberment Plan at, hmm... Bowery? Their "last show" which was not actually their last, but advertised as such.

Also, (and can anyone blame me for this?) Sigur Ros at Radio City Music Hall. We sat in cushioned chairs and they were playing sleep music.

And Joseph Arthur.

jenn K (satellitesynth), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

A whole slew of hardcore bands (I think B.G.K. was one of them) while waiting for the Dead Kennedys to go on.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 23:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Iron and Wine (almost)

uninteresting circular acoustic guitar riffs + soothing vocals = shut eye

PB, Wednesday, 11 May 2005 23:53 (twenty-one years ago)

vanessa novaeris (novaeris), Thursday, 12 May 2005 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Anthony Braxton. An hour long drone piece. I lasted about twenty minutes. Richard Muhal Abrams woke me up with a brief burst on piano, but then it was back to circular breathing.

Not Thaat Chuck, Thursday, 12 May 2005 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Charalambides @ Terrastock '02.
The very definition of mesmerizing.

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Thursday, 12 May 2005 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)
