Has anybody seen that Thrill Jockey DVD, Looking For A Thrill?

Looks cool, may be an endurance test though - isn't it like 7 hours long? Anyway, has anybody seen it? Can anyone give me a complete list of who's on it? Can't seem to find the info anywhere...

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Thursday, 12 May 2005 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

is lonesome organist on it?

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 12 May 2005 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow! I really was just gonna post this.

I haven't seen most of it, but I skimmed through it the other night when I had some friends over. The Mouse on Mars guys were funny, and yes, Jeremy (lonesomeorganist) is on (talking about Bach's organ pieces, I believe). Some were pretty good, especially the more sincere ones, like Mike Watt. I think there's over five hours worth.

peepee (peepee), Friday, 13 May 2005 00:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I have not seen it all. Highlights though, that totally make it worth it, are Thurston Moore's story about his first time at CBGB's, seeing Suicide as a high school kid. He tells a story so well I gotta think he could have been an artist in any medium. The other one I really liked is Gene Booth's. It's hilarious, from the garden setting, to how he acts out the guy dancing on acid.

steve hise, Friday, 13 May 2005 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

It took a little while but i watched the whole thing, lots of little standouts. But then i'm a sucker to hear people rave about music too. You don't have to watch it all in one sitting remember!

Phil Dokes (sunny), Friday, 13 May 2005 01:13 (twenty-one years ago)

oh man, can SOMEBODY please post the complete list of interviewees?? Totally dumb that it's not even on the Thrill Jockey website. I'm pretty much sold on it because of Chesnutt, Thurston and Hamid Drake, but want to know it's more than just Chicago wanksters after that.

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Friday, 13 May 2005 01:40 (twenty-one years ago)

"The interviews on the DVD include recollections by Mike Watt, Thurston Moore, Hamid Drake, Bjork, Yo La Tengo, Tortoise, the Butchies, Jon Spencer, Vic Chesnutt, Kurt Wagner, Fred Anderson, and Giant Sand - as well as members of the Urinals, Califone, Jesus Lizard, the Boredoms, Mekons, Slint, the Sea and Cake, and Calexico".

Bobby Peru (Bobby Peru), Friday, 13 May 2005 01:48 (twenty-one years ago)

That's it? For some reason I thought, in five hours, there'd be more. And for some reason i thought i remembered Rollins being involved, for better or worse.

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Friday, 13 May 2005 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I went ahead and scanned in my booklet, the translation came across a bit wobbly, but this is better than nothing (Thrill Jockey really should have a listing SOMEwhere of this you'd think!)

…and the SNL guy isn’t on it, just for the record…

steve hise, do you own the dvd? if so, do you think i could borrow it next time you're in town?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 13 May 2005 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

i've been borrowing it indefinitely from a friend. if i still have it, i'll bring it. since it's opp, i'd feel shitty letting you borrow it, so you'll have to watch it with me. them's the breaks. i think your singer would like to see it too. maybe we'll do a screening at his or your place.

steve hise, Friday, 13 May 2005 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Thank you Phil! That's much better. You mean I get to hear Hamid Drake talk about music that's influenced him AND ogle Janet Beveridge Bean? I don't deserve so much bliss.

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Friday, 13 May 2005 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

no way rollins would be on it, howard gr3ynolds sent him a note making fun of his misfits tattoos a few years ago when asked for a promo of the first tortoise record, hee hee.

i'd like to see that but i sure don't wanna buy it.

hstencil (hstencil), Saturday, 14 May 2005 02:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I enjoyed a lot of these interviews. Thurston Moore's is awesome, as is James McNew. I don't get how it's five hours long, though. Can DVDs hold that much?

Mark (MarkR), Saturday, 14 May 2005 03:24 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
I just picked this up..

The idea is great.. but the execution is painful, mainly because the director/technical folks went WAAAAAAY too far in the "look at us use this awesome Jitter plugin with our hot state-of-the-art digital video software" department. I wish most of the interviews were just straight interviews, with the residual editing for momentum... I really did want to hear/see David Yow's story but he kept time warping in and out of his car thanks to "arty digital video effects!". Same thing with Dan Peters, but he kept stuttering into an Alternate Universe Where His Doppelgänger Was Drinking A Beer. Yeah, it sounds funny in print, but it's annoying as fuck when you watch it. It's my major point of contention with the DVD.. well, that, and Ian Williams' piece. His "moment" was interesting and a departure, but why do we have to get a closeup of his saliva and zits, and see him with a prop Fisher price brand headphone/mic set channeling an 8-year-old? I was this close to throwing all my Don Cab and Storm&Stress CDs in a bag, chucking it across the lake to land in front of the neighborhood record storefront attached with a sign saying "FAH THE CHIL'RUN!"... Or maybe Ian made his piece that deliberately annoying..haha.

So yeah: high points.. Thurston and Watt, definitely. Mark Arm and Dan Peters were great.. Bettina, the "fans", the Butchies, Yo La Tengo, Mouse On Mars, Ian Mackaye Eye and Yoshimi of The Boredoms. I forget who else. Spotty, but worth it.

The best part is realizing how many musicians interviewed were really into Ted Nugent before their "moment".

That said, I'm looking forward to a sequel.. and I hope they don't digitally fuck with the interviewees next time, as mentioned/complained about above.

donuty! donuti! donuté! (donut), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

the highlight was definitely thurston moore on his first suicide concert. alan vega was vile. the best memories were the once where people got scared to death. mackaye and big black was another great love in awe story. and the trembling visual effects where really crap, as you said donut. in the beginning i thought the dvd was broken. but i got used to it after a while.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:08 (twenty years ago)

From the mid 90s and on, I REALLY wish Thurston Moore had a regular column somewhere where he talks about moments from his past. He's the best storyteller ever. His story about he and his friend's first foray into Max's Kansas City deserves to be a scene in a movie. The description of the Suicide show alone.. I can just imagine the cinematography already. It also makes me realize how inferior studio Suicide was to live Suicide based on the story... sigh, another show I would have loved to attend if I had a time machine.

The thread title is funny if you don't know "Looking For A Thrill" is the title.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

Amiccio, $$$... did you know t0rt01se takes it in all ways?

donuty! donuti! donuté! (donut), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

I can think of two things wrong with this 'Thrill Jockey' DVD.

Nelson Muntz (miccio), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

obviously mackaye talked about bad brains (and ted nugent and the cramps), not big black.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 04:46 (twenty years ago)

#2: That POSEUR Mike McGonigal is in it!

(HI MIKE! ;-) )
