Becuz I can't post as regularly as I used to, I'm going to post regularly about stuff that elicits a 'holy shit' from me (not on a monthly basis, but we'll call it Roger Fidelity's 'Holy Shit' Of The Month because it sounds nice)

Refer to my recent Brothers of the Occult Sisterhood thread for Volume One.

Volume 2: Pharoah Overlord!!! These Finnish freaks have been around a while but I'm just catching up now on their totally unique, totally fried rock-zonk. Some of the less self-consciously 'heavy' stuff sounds like dance music (well, of the Thomas Brinkman variety) as simulated by guitar and drums. Seek with yr soul. You'll love it.

eight months pass...
So, how's this thread working out for ya?

Edward Bax (EdBax), Sunday, 22 January 2006 05:34 (twenty years ago)

Pharaoh Overlord are great! We already have a thread on em, though.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Sunday, 22 January 2006 06:01 (twenty years ago)

hahaaa sorry dude. forgot all about this. will get back on it soon. i'm bad at searching the archives.

Recent 'holy shit:'

1. How come I never heard of John Hartford before?? Dude RULES!!

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Sunday, 22 January 2006 08:20 (twenty years ago)

OTM about John Hartford.

Run, don't walk to your local record store to score a copy of Aereo-Plain. The best slab of Prog-grass ever!

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Sunday, 22 January 2006 20:45 (twenty years ago)

Now it's funny this should be revived, as guess whose new album I be reviewing right now. (That Daniel Carter feller is a good player; just called up a web page on him.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 22 January 2006 20:48 (twenty years ago)

Brothers of the Occult Sisterhood and Pharaoh Overlord are fantastic.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Sunday, 22 January 2006 20:50 (twenty years ago)

I just got a copy of Pharaoh Overlord's III, and tracks 5 and 6, "Octagon" into "Journey"... talk about taking drugs to make music to take drugs to.

nancyboy (nancyboy), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 12:23 (twenty years ago)

I like the Pharaoh Overlord stuff I've heard, and I like the comparison to Brinkman, Roger. They remind of me early Bowery Electric.

Jeff Sumner (Jeff Sumner), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 21:55 (twenty years ago)

yeah man i'm playing with those guys in march, really excited to meet them.

Holy shit of the day: I'm probbaly not supposed to talk about this yet, but I just heard an unmastered version of the solo album by Ethan Miller (of Comets on Fire) and it's damn near fucking genius. Total Faces style feel good rock with amazing guitar playing. You'll need this when it comes out.

I also really like this new band called Indian Jewelry, who do lots of different kindsa noise rock sorta stuff, the best of which reminds me of prime era Royal Trux!

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 22:33 (twenty years ago)

Indian Jewelry (the former NTX + Electric) are cool, seen them in Detroit a few times and own a few of their recordings. Others have opined they've simply ripped off Royal Trux and Suicide, but I dig 'em.

Jeff Sumner (Jeff Sumner), Thursday, 26 January 2006 18:11 (twenty years ago)

Indian Jewelry, that rings a bell...I think they're playing ArthurBall?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 26 January 2006 18:16 (twenty years ago)

For all Pharaoh Overlord/Circle fans have you heard Tivol? Features ex members of circle.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Thursday, 26 January 2006 18:39 (twenty years ago)

i did. didn't do much for me.

baby, disco is fuck (yournullfame), Friday, 27 January 2006 04:03 (twenty years ago)

Alex Lukashevsky - anyone heard this guy? Really terrific songs - think Caetano Veloso meets Mark Llanegan. Got a nice promo of this a few weeks ago and just got around to listening. It's great!

Mortuary Drape - totally sick Italian black metal in the classic style. They don't bother themselves with silly things like 'props' - they actually dig up real dead bodies for their cover art! Can't beat that.

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 09:55 (twenty years ago)

dude, mortuary drape is the shit. haven't heard anything by them that wasn't great. i wish the double disc collection of their early demos wasn't $40.

you should check out the new lugubrum album heilige dwazen.

baby, disco is fuck (yournullfame), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 10:30 (twenty years ago)

will do, thanks man!

i got those MD demos on slsk, by the way - really shitty sound quality though.

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 11:04 (twenty years ago)

Checked out the Indian Jewelry "Sangles Redux" and it's killer. Big time Suicide influence throughout. Can't wait to see these guys at SXSW.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 15:33 (twenty years ago)

I got an Indian Jewelry single through bizarre coincidences, and it's pretty good. Weird phasing noises over thuddy bass and buried fuzz guitar.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 16:29 (twenty years ago)

I thought the thread title was "'Holy Shit' of the MOUTH".
