So the piece of shit free CD burning software totally konked out on me last night (grrr, fuck you Iomega helpdesk) and I'm thinking I should probably find something better. Any suggestions? Does iTunes let you do mp3 discs? Should I upgrade and use MusicMatch's software? I don't want to spend a lot (or preferably any) money.

http://www.burnatonce.com is free and burns data/audio cd, it is great.

http://www.burrrn.net/ is really good for making audio cds from mp3/m4a/ogg/wav etc

Does iTunes let you do mp3 discs

Yes. You just change make a playlist then select 'burn mp3 disc' in Burning settings.

change

Haha I just figured out how to make iTunes make mp3s instead of those stupid mp4s that it defaults to like yesterday. It was a triumph. I should probably make myself more familiar with the software.

http://www.deepburner.com

is free, easy, and great if you're one of the obsessives like me who likes to burn their mp3 discs so that each album is a file folder, making scanning through and finding songs easier.

musicmatch does the same thing, but you have to pay for it.

That's exactly what I wanted hear, Aaron.

iTunes also makes each album a file folder. Organizing is a snap.
Not sure how the other free programs compare, but iTunes' CD cover printing capabilities are way cool.

welcome. if you have any questions about using it, let me know.

Alternatively, iTunes is great if you're one of the obsessives like me who uses tags rather than filenames and folders to find things. Burn an mp3 disc with iTunes and you can then pop it in and instantly organise it by album, artist or whatever else you like, as with any playlist.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 13 May 2005 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

aha!

but I can do the same thing using another, even dorkier program which makes sure all my tags are right!

actually, i should consider DLing itunes. seems like it does everything i want in one spot.

AaronK (AaronK), Friday, 13 May 2005 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

What is this even dorkier program, Aaron?

Lingbertt, Friday, 13 May 2005 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

dorktunes?

You'll probably hate iTunes at first, Aaron. If you're used to organising music in a file and folder structure, to move to what is essentially a flashy relational database is a bit of a shock at first. I'm inconsistent, because I hate iPhoto doing it with pictures, but for music I love it. Of course the files and folders are still sitting there underlying the whole thing (and unlike iPhoto, the folders are actually intuitively organised, by artist and then album), but the iTunes Library hides all that from you.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 13 May 2005 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

eek. i feel exposed.

it's Tagscanner. http://xdev.narod.ru/tagscan_e.htm

it does the normal thing of scanning the internet database to find tags, but usually when you're SLSKing, filenames are so fucked up that you have to massage them a little bit with a program like this.

uh, I have to massage them.....

AaronK (AaronK), Friday, 13 May 2005 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh ok. so it's like shitty windows Media Player where you have to load your library each time you open up the program? you cant just drag and drop from explorer into a playlist?

AaronK (AaronK), Friday, 13 May 2005 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

If you burn a CD with folders, will an mp3-capable portable CD player be able to handle it?

nickn (nickn), Friday, 13 May 2005 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

'Load your library'? I suppose so. That's all automatic. All the files you want indexed by iTunes come up in your Library everytime you open iTunes. By default, if you add to your Library (by dragging and dropping or however) it makes a copy of the mp3 file and puts it in the iTunes folder directory (which as I say, you don't really have to look at). You can change the setting so that it just indexes files spread all over your HD, but I don't really see the point. I just sporadically delete the original files from my Downloads folder.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 13 May 2005 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

(basically there's not much of a reason for every mp3 on my HD to be handled by iTunes, so I'm happy for it to take control of them all)

Alba (Alba), Friday, 13 May 2005 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess this is the reason I don't like the model with iPhoto. I'm often fiddling with photos in Photoshop and don't want to have to use iPhoto's folder structure to find things. With music, the only thing I really do to mp3s other than play them is change the tags, and iTunes is fine for that.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 13 May 2005 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah iTunes works best if you give yourself over to it completely and play by its rules. The first couple months I had an iPod I tried to use a different MP3 player, only add folders I wanted to put on my iPod to the iTunes library, etc. and it was a fucking mess. It's an all-or-nothing sort of thing, I think.

I do have how much time I spend typing in song titles and shit. What a pain in the ass.

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 13 May 2005 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

ok, thanks alba.

nickn - depends on your mp3 player, but i doubt that it doesnt. I do it this way because my car stereo reads mp3 cds with subfolders. my girlfriend's $50 panasonic cd/mp3 player reads them too. you shouldnt have a problem, but i'd double check to be sure.

AaronK (AaronK), Friday, 13 May 2005 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

mark - there are several/many freeware programs, like tagscanner, that do mass renaming and tag editing. saves so much of that time.

AaronK (AaronK), Friday, 13 May 2005 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, man, that's great, I will check that out -- is tagscanner a good one?

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 13 May 2005 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

fuck, i'm organizing a playlist track id RIGHT NOW. It's become a default activity.
That's itunes and a healthy curious streak for you.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 13 May 2005 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

tagscanner is the best one i've found so far. its free, doesnt have spy/adware, and its pretty flexible. it's small, too, which helps. yeah, it's good!

AaronK (AaronK), Friday, 13 May 2005 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks Aaron. I'm going to check Tagscanner out this weekend. Tagging manually can be a huge pain.

Lingbertt, Friday, 13 May 2005 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

TagScanner is good, I find mp3Tag better though, easier interface.

666, Friday, 13 May 2005 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, tagscanner's interface is just a tiny bit tricky, but ive gotten used to it already.
