TS: "I Should Coco" Vs. "Life On Other Planet"

I have never understood those who claim that Supergrass were better early on than later on in their career. For me, they got better, more melodic and more sophisticated as they slowed down the speed of their music. Their two last albums are true pop gems, with "Life..." being the better of the two, crowded with great tunes and great sophisticated and detailed arrangements. "I Should Coco", however, I still consider one of the most overrated albums of the Britpop era. Way too fast and furious.

they peaked with #2. I don't like I should coco all that much either save for the singles.

Life is actually their first album that made me think, "Oh, I might want to listen to this again." Logically, I haven't, but the thought counts.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 2 June 2005 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Geir, I agree with some of what you say. Life on Other Planets is definitely my favorite of their albums. It's jsut flat out great, every song sounds inspired. And they seem to know it, too. The lyrics on "Grace" just, I don't know, swagger or something. Don't know why you need to slag off their other stuff, though.

""I Should Coco", however, I still consider one of the most overrated albums of the Britpop era." That's just ott. You've heard "Feel Alright," right?

beta ray bill, Thursday, 2 June 2005 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I still reckon Supergrass is the best example we've come up with so far of Acts whose entire album output has always been on the decline, with no exception

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 2 June 2005 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

You've heard "Feel Alright," right?

That is one song. Certainly one of the best on the album, but a good single doesn't make a great album.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 2 June 2005 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I Should Coco is one of my favorite albums of the '90s. Quite honestly, I'm finding the replies in this thread surprising.

Their last two albums are pretty good, but they don't measure up to their first two.

fancielad, Thursday, 2 June 2005 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

And that song is called "Alright".

I think the opening track is one of the most infectious openers of all time.

fancielad, Thursday, 2 June 2005 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I Should Coco is great

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Thursday, 2 June 2005 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I Should Coco>In It For The Money>Supergrass>Life On Other Planets.....The earlier stuff has the timeless melodies, the boundless momentum, IIFTM signifying the peak of their sophistication and songcraft...recently, they've been putting on more of a front, more of a product of their influences

Space Is the Place (Space Is the Place), Thursday, 2 June 2005 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Their influences are good (Beatles etc.) so it's just a good thing they are more obvious.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 2 June 2005 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

they peaked with #2.

Clearly. In It For The Money IS their most consistant record in terms of everything that it seems Supergrass is shooting for - it's the perfect combination of the mod/rocking-out early material and the more melodic and supposedly "mature" material, although personally I don't think it's the slightest bit more mature. They're still kids at heart. I think LOOP better than the self-titled though.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Thursday, 2 June 2005 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I hate that I agree with Geir here, but no Supergrass album is better front to back than Life On Other Planets.

Supergrass's career more closely follows the fabled Star Trek syndrome, where the even numbered releases far outweigh the quality of the odd numbered ones.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 2 June 2005 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

somehow i've ended up with all four supergrass albums. i haven't listened to coco since the year of its release. i probably like the last two best, "grace" being my favourite song of theirs since, well, "mansize rooster" probably.

In It For The Money > Supergrass > I Should Coco > Life On Other Planets.

In It For The Money is one of those albums where if I didn't know, I wouldn't have guessed which songs were the singles, it's that solid. "Cheapskate" probably the pick, but also "You Can't See Me". Oh, and theremin, brilliance. Supergrass is a lot more tired and intricate and more leaden, but it works because they're still pop songs - and even when it gets a bit strange, like "Mary" it works because it's also the poppiest thing on there. Pop + creepy organ = good.

LOOP... some good things on there, definitely, like "Grace" and "Rush Hour Soul", but "Seen The Light" is plodding, "Za" is pastiche without a really good hook, "Never Done Nothing".. let's not even go there. I still like the first album a lot, but "Alright" never did it for me. "Mansize Rooster" really was much, much better.

In It For The Money > I Should Coco > Supergrass > Life On Other Planets

That would be my order but truth be told I love all of them. The last one was really good but will admit that I didn't play it nearly as much as I have done for the three before that.

I even remember when they were called the Jennifers.

BeeOK (boo radley), Friday, 3 June 2005 05:46 (twenty-one years ago)

How did Supergrass so blatantly rip off T Rex for Life On Other Planets and get away with it?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 3 June 2005 05:49 (twenty-one years ago)

They didn't get away with it. Nobody bought it, at least not compared to the ones before it.

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 3 June 2005 05:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I considered "In It For The Money" a huge improvement at the time. Still not too keen on a couple of the faster singles, but "Sky Hits The Sun" and "Late In The Day" were the first couple of Supergrass singles that I really loved.

But I still think the improvement continued with their two next albums anyway.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 3 June 2005 06:57 (twenty-one years ago)

That is "Sun Hits The Sky" obv :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 3 June 2005 06:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Geir, just when I think I have you figured out, you surprise. How can you rate the last album when you're such a stickler for melody? There are songs on that album that aren't even songs so much as repetitive T-Rex pastiches.

The middle two have the best melodies, and the first is energetic and infectious. The last one - dull on both counts, and it shows all the more so when they try to go back to what worked in the past.

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 3 June 2005 07:13 (twenty-one years ago)

yaa, by saying that LOOP was a product of their influences, I meant specifically T Rex, in that they were unable to make the sound their own...whereas, w/ the first two The Beatles + Stones influence is evident, but the sound is still unmistakenly Supergrass

Space Is the Place (Space Is the Place), Friday, 3 June 2005 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Does anyone else think "Evening Of The Day" is the best song on LOOP??

And when is their next album coming out anyway?

billstevejim (billstevejim), Friday, 3 June 2005 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

eleven months pass...
"In It For The Money" is mostly great, but it contains a little too much of that fast and furious rock'n'roll stuff that was so typical of the debut.

'Caught by the Fuzz' remains their finest moment, IMO.
Never forget the time Danny was on some lame Radio 1 quiz, and he paused momentarily.
DJ: Hey, are you smoking a fag or something?
Danny: Er...might be

dr x o'skeleton, Tuesday, 30 May 2006 15:00 (twenty years ago)

I loved the pep and rush of the first album. Especially what with it feeling like an entire LP inspired almost solely by the Buzzcocks' "Everybody's Happy Nowadays."
