Looks fucking brilliant!!!

dmun drive-in (dmun), Friday, 3 June 2005 09:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmm... Another mediocre ATP beckons.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 3 June 2005 09:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I'm not overly thrilled. The last few have all been pretty rock(ist... kidding!), would be good to have another more dance oriented one. Autechre was definitely the best of the three I've been to.

ledge (ledge), Friday, 3 June 2005 10:20 (twenty-one years ago)

The Autechre one was a step in the right direction, but less 'I' and more 'D' would be better.

Ellen Allien to curate please.

ATP UK 2005 - Curated by Mars Volta

RS (Catalino) LaRue (RSLaRue), Friday, 3 June 2005 10:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmm. Don't suppose that's the same 400 Blows that I'm thinking of.

NickB (NickB), Friday, 3 June 2005 10:39 (twenty-one years ago)

but less 'I' and more 'D' would be better.

Wouldn't er Homelands be the place for that kinda thing?

ledge (ledge), Friday, 3 June 2005 10:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't suppose that's the same 400 Blows that I'm thinking of.

No, this is a LA artpunk band who use lots of metal percussion and really should have spent 30 seconds on a search engine before settling on a name.

You can kill this thread if you want by the way - didn't see that one way down there

DJ Mencap0))), Friday, 3 June 2005 11:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Are they any good? Your description makes me think of Savage Republic.

NickB (NickB), Friday, 3 June 2005 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Wouldn't er Homelands be the place for that kinda thing?

That;s like telling a rock fan why go to ATP when you can go to The Reading Festival?

Homelands is a homogenised, all-bases covered, lowest commom denominator packaged festival - whereas ATP is a single-artist, single-vision-focused event relating to one person's interests.

I don't see why Ellen Allien couldn't put together an immense line up of variety, depth and fun which would appeal to an ATP crowd - have you heard any of her mixes?

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 3 June 2005 12:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Fairy nuff. Haven't heard any Ellen Allien, will try and d/l some. Am a newcomer to this 'less I more D' stuff though, only just started getting into Kompakt.

ledge (ledge), Friday, 3 June 2005 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha. I seem to have inadvertantly created a new term.

Check out her 'Weiss Mix' and 'My Parade' mixes for starters - and also take time to listen to her albums: 'Berlinette' is probably my favourite, but she also has a new one out. All these are on Bpitch Control which is her own label.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 3 June 2005 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Dance music genre names have always been my achilles heel... I was gutted when Jeremy Paxman was interrupted before he could read out a definition of 'house' for a University Challenge Question. I think microhouse is my favourite genre name though. Does exactly what it says on the tin.

ledge (ledge), Friday, 3 June 2005 13:37 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost - Has Ellen Allien got the name recognition to even be asked yet?

I think even M.I.A. & Diplo would be more likely to get the call right now!

To explain, I lurk a bit on littledetroit & other forums and I hear even less talk about her on there (more strictly 'techno' places than here), than in other forums that may have heard of her from the crossover attention 'Berlinette' got (blame Thom Yorke).

I guess what I'm saying is I don't get out dancing enough as it is, and live much too far away from where 'it' may be 'at' to have any idea how popular she really is right now. Or exactly what demographic is picking up on her (and Bpitch Control!) generally.

Suggestion totally seconded btw :-)

fandango (fandango), Friday, 3 June 2005 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Cheers. I know what you mean... but... who would have thought Vincent Gallo would have sold it out? I think the ATP "brand" is probably the most important part, rather than who creates - plus, having it at a decent time of year when you're not freezing your arse off in a cardbaord box.

I think that for all the (self-mythologising?) talk of ATP being forward-thinking and different, The Mars Volta (for all their charms) are a bit of a safe choice, and the other acts seem safe too.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 3 June 2005 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Ellen's line up I could imagine being something like this, it we're going to carry on speculating...

AGF Laptop set
Barbara Morgenstern Live
Sahko label DJ set
Nina Hagen Band
Andrea Parker DJ
Björk
David Bowie/Mouse On Mars* perform the Berlin Trilogy remixed live.

& any BPitch acts available

+ electro DJ's
+ Booty Bass
+ Underground Resistance DJ's

*that last one.. I don't know if she likes MoM actually but she's a big Bowie fan & has namedropped him in many an interview. But Dave is a big MoM fan ;)

fandango (fandango), Friday, 3 June 2005 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Sounds good - why don't we arange it ourselves? All Techno's Parties.

All you Plaid-haters beware, she would probably get them in too.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 3 June 2005 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Vincent Gallo has a 'name' in films though... and inevitably in soundtrack curation by extension. And having his album released on Warp probably helped.

I agree though, they should avoid tying the brand to a particular style before it gets too rigid. Or maybe it already has now :-/

xpost - haha All Techno's Parties sounds great!

fandango (fandango), Friday, 3 June 2005 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Thinking about ATP I think the most fun I ever had was some guy from 'Rough Trade' spinning contemporary R'n'B acapellas over various dancehall riddims - during the Shellac curated festival - in the Queen Vic. I saw more people going crazy to that than anything else over the entire weekend. More things like that please ATP.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 3 June 2005 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, the sideshow type events always have potential for fun.

I'm still wondering if there are any artists (as curators) who could genuinely overcome the rock/dance dichotomy though.

The DFA?

fandango (fandango), Friday, 3 June 2005 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

an even lamer suggestion - The Prodigy!

fandango (fandango), Friday, 3 June 2005 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Mike Patton is my stock answer for this loose subject and will continue to be so

DJ Mencap0))), Friday, 3 June 2005 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

BOC?
