Did anyone see the Phil Donahue show on the Hardcore Culture in (?) 87 ?

I just remembered seeing it a long time ago. Anyone remember who was on it or know anyone who was on it or in the audience?

As I remember it, it was idiots talking to idiots about idiots. Phil was clueless about irony (see Ironic Songs Often Misinterpretted) and the panel was not interested in saying anything intelligent. It was kind of like the Quincy episode in real life.

was that the one with Jello Biafra and Wendy O. Williams and Luke Campbell? If so, FUCKING UBERCLASSIC.

No but I did see the punk rock episode of The Stanley Siegel Show back in the 70s with one of the guests being Rodney on the Roq.

I actually have this on tape. I should probably consider digitizing it because it is indeed classic.
Let's see... Jimmy Gestapo from Murphy's Law is on the panel. I'm pretty sure there was at least one other musician of note, but I can't quite remember. I shall do my best to watch it this weekend and report back.

xpost: THe one I have is not the Jello / Wendy O. / Luke one.

Mike Dixn (Mike Dixon), Friday, 3 June 2005 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

No, I don't think they were on it (WOW & Jello) ... I would remember that, wouldn't I? It was a bunch of kids from NYC .. I don't think there was anyone famous, but there was a band represented .. I can't remember if they were anyone anyone would know or just some hacks who stole some equipment.

xxpost ... Mike, that may be the one, yeah ....

geyser muffler and a quarter (Dave225), Friday, 3 June 2005 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah now that I think about it, the Jello/Wendy/Luke one was about censorship (natch), it was around the time of "Nasty as They Wanna Be"

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 3 June 2005 17:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Tweo brief mentions of it:

Apparently Cro-Mags were on..? I think I would have remembered that though..

What was the TV talk show where they took a caller on the air who pretended to have a problem of some sort and then it ended up being some guy from Born Against? That was funny.

haha i saw this!

Luke one was about censorship (natch), it was around the time of "Nasty as They Wanna Be"

Then it couldn't have been 87. As Nasty as They Wanna Be was around 89/90.

87 Luke is far more interesting to me.

I would like to see this. Luke and Wendy O Williams on the same show. Sheesh.

Oprah did a show with Jello and Ice T on it. I remeber thinking it great at the time, but can remember barely anything of it now except that I thought Ice T had a weird haircut but it turned out to be a furry cap.

Someone should put all this 80's HC fun and games together in a documentary for those of us in Limey-land who were trying to keep ourselves amused with the 3 Johns and the Membranes at the time. The 70s London scene has been done to death already.

Soukesian, Friday, 3 June 2005 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

"I would like to see this. Luke and Wendy O Williams on the same show. Sheesh"

the one thing I really remember about it was that Donahue was being a real asshole to Wendy O. and asking her how she expected anybody to take her seriously looking the way she did, w/duct tape on nipples, how could she degrade herself like that, etc. It was fuckin ridiculous.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 3 June 2005 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I recall on the Jimmy Gestapo show on Donahue some guy with a Youth of Today t-shirt was asking a question and Donahue stopped him in the middle and said "That's a nice, high-quality t-shirt. How much does it cost to make a shirt like that?"- it was supposed to be a moment of

oooh-I'm-bringing-up-the-economic-base-to-your-rocknroll-lifestyle

kind of comment, but instead it came off as really cruisy. I watched it in 11th grade wtih my friends and we thought it was fucking hilarious. I think the episode was entitled "Why Is My Kid's Hair Green?"

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Saturday, 4 June 2005 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I seem to vaguely remember this....Phil turning a completely deaf ear to any postive aspects of healthy cynicsm and self-reliance in order ton concentrate on the tonsorial and sartorial aspects. What an asshole. And to think he gets to go to bed with Marlo Thomas every night. The world's just not a fair place.

The Born Against phone call can be heard on Patriotic Battle Hymns for Children.

Battle Hymns For The Race War, innit? It's off Jerry Springer and to be quite honest, no-one's ever furnished me with enough context for me to understand it properly

"CHiPs" Online: Episode Guide: Season 5: Battle of the Bands

516 - Battle of the Bands

Original Airdate: 31-Jan-1982

Plot: After slashing some tires, some punks break into the van of the band "Snow Pink". After stealing guitars, they then set the brakes loose on the van and let it roll down the hill. Ponch and Jon chase the punks but they manage to get away. Back at Central, Jon, Getraer, and Harlan give Ponch some ribbing about his singing. Later, they head out to talk to Snow Pink herself. They return a sliced-up microphone but inform her they haven't found her guitars yet. At her club, Duke is screening tapes. He invites the band "Pain" to be in the Battle of the Bands. We soon find out that "Pain" is the punks' band! Later, at Central, Grossie slam dances against the lockers and tells the history of slam dancing. A classic "CHiPs" moment! Shortly thereafter, Ponch and Jon go visit "Pain". Just before they're about to go inside, one of the band members throws a bass guitar off the roof and onto a car causing a multiple-vehicle accident. After making sure a man's okay, they chase the punks who escape on their motorcycles. The punks climb a barb-wire fence and escape. After Ponch leaves to get ready for his performance, Jon goes to try to talk Duke into more security. When Jon and Ponch meet up again, Ponch admits he's happy being a CHP and doesn't want to give it up. That night, at the Battle of the Bands, "Pain" rips up the bathroom while "Snow Pink" performs. Soon enough, "Pain" begins disrupting the audience. When Duke tries to kick them out, they threaten him with a knife. After the commercial, "Pain" performs. Punks in the audience start slam dancing as Snow Pink notices her guitar being used by a member of "Pain". Since "Pain" locked everyone out, Jon breaks a window to get in. He finds Duke tied up in a closet. Jon enters the concert hall and "Pain" runs off as a riot starts. Police officers get the crowd under control with Jon's vocal help. As the leader of "Pain" tries to escape, Ponch rides up causing the punk to spill. The punk threatens to blow them both up by holding a lighter near leaking gas. Ponch blows out the flame and saves the day. Back inside, Ponch performs "Celebration" in front of Grossie, Turner, Baricza, Harlan, Jon, Getraer, and Bonnie. When he finishes, the winner of the Battle of the Bands is announced as "Snow Pink".

Great Quote: "Oh Ponch! You were terrific last night!" -Bonnie to Ponch (regarding his singing)
Great Scene: Ponch singing "Celebration"

Guest Stars: Susan Richardson (as Snow Pink), Bill Forsythe (aka "William Forsythe" as Trasher), Doug McClure (from Out of this World as Duke), Daniel Davies (as Potato Head), James Margolin (as Fido), Lori Street (as Surfer Girl), David Boyle (as Father), Shepherd (as Snow's Band), and Jeff Harlan (as Disc Jockey)
Written by: Larry Mollin
Directed by: Barry Crane

Fun Fact:
This episode has original music and Erik Estrada singing "Celebration"!

Oops:
The punks open Snow Pink's van by wrapping a chain around the door handle. That's a strange technique!
Before the van jumps onto the beach the volleyball players run. How could they be sure the van was going to jump onto the beach?
Ponch and Jon must be psychic. Without seeing the punks set the van in motion down the hill, they chase them.
When the guitar causes an accident, there's nobody in the crashing white car.
After checking one person at that accident, Ponch and Jon leave. They ignore everyone else.

Emily comes to see Quincy about a young 18 year-old boy he has just completed an autopsy on. He died while slamdancing at a punk rock club, killed while dancing to lyrics about death, lack of hope and violence. She had been counseling his girlfriend Abby and is worried about her. Quincy's report declares that the punk music Zack listened to was a part of the cause of his death but the main reason was an ice pick in his back. Punk music and its lyrics come under the spotlight as Quincy tries to find evidence to prove who killed Zack.
