Of Montreal POX

So I'm getting ready to buy some random Of Montreal tracks off of a MP3 service thingy and I'd like to make a custom "best of" from my purchases. I already have The Sunlandic Twins, but nothing before that. So what should I get?

"Isn't It Nice," maybe. If just for the "One thing I've learned is that you never by Larry beer, or else he'll bug you every day" line.

Picking songs from Satanic Panic in the Attic is maybe like picking songs off of Rubber Soul or something. Doesn't seem to reflect the scope of the album. I guess my favorite songs on it might be "My British Tour Diary" and "Rapture Rapes the Muses."

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 3 June 2005 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

"Tim I Wish You Were Born a Girl"
"A Collection Of Poems About Water"
"Honeymoon In San Francisco"
"Let's Do Everything For The First Time Forever"
"Dustin Hoffman Wife Makes A Sarcastic Remark, Cuts The Head Off A Duck, Places It Where The Tub Was"
"My British Tour Diary"
"I Felt Like Smashing My Face Through A Plate Glass Window"
"Kissing In The Grass"
"Penelope"
"One Of A Very Few Of A Kind"

Here's a link to a Rhapsody playlist featuring these songs if anyone cares.

hissing fauna towers over them all

flappy bird, Tuesday, 1 November 2016 17:37 (nine years ago)

i would have to go with Sunlandic Twins in the towering above all category.

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 1 November 2016 17:43 (nine years ago)

to be honest I looked at my playlist of everything they've ever done and thought there would be many more songs from the later albums. I played Hissing Fauna to death in 2006/07 and rarely do now, but looking at the songs titles, I couldn't escape the fact it's their best album. I picked nothing from Skeletal Lamping, for example.

As I've probably said elsewhere, I'm mystified that isn't a more commonly held view that Innocence Reaches is their best album in years, but I don't believe there are any top ten songs it.

PaulTMA, Tuesday, 1 November 2016 18:42 (nine years ago)

so begins our alabee

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 1 November 2016 21:54 (nine years ago)

it completely mystifies me how anyone could regard 'innocence reaches' their best album in ages

imago, Tuesday, 1 November 2016 22:28 (nine years ago)

really think history will be kind to 'aureate gloom'

imago, Tuesday, 1 November 2016 22:28 (nine years ago)

k3vin k., Tuesday, 1 November 2016 22:29 (nine years ago)

great song. the last song on Hissing Fauna that I came around on, like five years after it came out. Such a great opening couplet:

She says I'm boring her camera
It takes more to delight the cadaver

Very nice ease out of the record, love the vocal arrangement at the end.

I would only save like 3-4 tracks from the albums between Hissing Fauna and the psych-rock comeback albums (the two before the most recent one)

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Wednesday, 2 November 2016 01:31 (nine years ago)

Hissing Fauna is blates their best album and anyone who says otherwise is a challops. that said, I had a lot of time for Skeletal Lamping at the time. I've not enjoyed a note of what came out after that.

otm, Skeletal Lamping is the last one I liked. Great record, up there with Hissing Fauna.

flappy bird, Wednesday, 2 November 2016 15:12 (nine years ago)

I still think False Priest is their best album. While I get that more people enjoy Hissing Fauna, I continue to be baffled that nobody else thinks as highly of False Priest as I do.
