'promo cd contains voice overs'

is this always a bad thing ?

i say not. on a fairly normal dance mix the appearance of the vocoder-ised vocal can actually add a little lift to the basic 4/4 beat .. then again .. on hip hop albums it really becomes annoying.

which labels are the worst at this ?

i recall finding a Rawkus promo of tha beatminerz ages ago, and the voiceovers really became intrusive .. whereas with this bedrock mix they actually dont bother me ..

Def Jux seems to be the most adamant proponent of this kind of stuff over here.

if the purpose of the promo cd is to give reviewers a chance to listen to the album before it comes out, promo voice overs are a sure way to piss off said reviewer, who may in fact give it a bad review.

I remember the promo for Kate Bush's "Rubber band girl" single was a CD of someone (not kate) reading the lyrics.

I should have kept all my Jux promos, just because the voice overs are so funny.

The Mr. Lif promo where the Promobot says Beeeeeeeeoooooootch makes me giggle when I think about it.

Didn't SA Smash choke the promobot to death on their promo?

The promo I got for the last Beatnuts album had a voiceover announcing the title and release date every thirty seconds, which is so frequent and intrusive I couldn't pay attention to the music. It was infuriating and I don't think I made it through the second track before I flung the CD across the room.

The promobots make me nuts. They're especially counterproductive in hip-hop, where they end up tramping over 60% of the rhymes. i've yet to hear a defense of them that i find even remotely justifiable.

It took me about four tracks in to realise that it was actually a promobot and not some weird vocal tic on the new Quasimoto album.

If it doesn't have the seal on it...you got fucked.

deej.., Monday, 4 July 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

Oh, is this where you get some jingle and a voice going "underground airplay" or whatever?? (I don't own a lot of promo cds).

thought of def jux as soon as i read the thread title. i actually find it odd to hear the cannibal ox album without the promo warning ...

The worst I've heard was the Madvillain.
I got a promo, it was not listenable honestly.
