I'm going to make a compilation. I have to go with "Be My Baby." I would love suggestions.

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Monday, 11 July 2005 13:52 (twenty years ago)

I might have to go with "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow." "Be My Baby" #2, "I Hear a Symphony" #3.

Lyra Jane (Lyra Jane), Monday, 11 July 2005 13:56 (twenty years ago)

Dude, he hit me and it felt like a kiss. An angry, knuckly kiss.

matlewis (matlewis), Monday, 11 July 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

"Her Head's Revolving" - The Three O'Clock

...What?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 11 July 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

every song by the crystals. "please hurt me" if you're feeling masochistic ("he hit me" is the more obvious choice); "in the morning" if you want a really good one-night stand; "another country, another world" if long-distance luv is your thing. for the paranoid: "girls can tell" and "are you trying to get rid of me baby."

(My serious answer is "Nightmare".)

Crystals: Then He Kissed Me

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Monday, 11 July 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

I love them all, so don't make me choose, but 'Give Him A Great Big Kiss' is my fave right now (w /Be My Baby as the all time champion...)

When I say I'm in love you best believe I'm in LOVE - L-U-V.

hold tight the private caller (mwah), Monday, 11 July 2005 14:51 (twenty years ago)

My first instinct is to say "Sweet Talkin' Guy."

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Monday, 11 July 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

the murmaids' "popsicles and icicles"!

president carter loves repetition (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 11 July 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

Jimmy Mod Is Sick of Being The Best At Everything (ModJ), Monday, 11 July 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

basically any girl group song about kissing and/or domestic abuse

matlewis (matlewis), Monday, 11 July 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

Which one is "Sally, Go 'Round the Roses" about?

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Monday, 11 July 2005 15:21 (twenty years ago)

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Monday, 11 July 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

"The Shoop Shoop Song"--does that count? It's on Rhino's girl group comp even though it's a solo cut. Anyway, it owns.

The Shangri-Las - Past, Present and Future

ana (ana), Monday, 11 July 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

I don't think I can avoid picking "Be My Baby" or "Will You Love Me Tomorrow".

Sleeper pick: Ronettes, "I Wonder".

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 11 July 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

The Toys - A Lovers' Concerto (essential imo!)

The Butterflies - Goodnight Baby

Marvelettes - When you're young and in love

PP Arnold - Everything's gonna be alright (okay, it's not a group, but it blends in perfectly ... plus it's a KILLER song)

Jez (Jez), Monday, 11 July 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

'My Boyfriend's Back' by the Angels

'He's So Fine' by the Chiffons

'Hate To Say I Told You So' by the Shangri Las

koogs (koogs), Monday, 11 July 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

So the big takeaway from this thread is that people in the UK don't know how to count to one.

Alex is OTM (Alex in SF), Monday, 11 July 2005 17:00 (twenty years ago)

"Past, Present & Future" seconded.

I'd like to hear this compilation. I'd also like to know if I'm right that once you have the Shangri-La's best of, nothing in the girl group genre will match it. I have the Spector box set, and that's great, but what else should we be buying?

Billy Pilgrim (Billy Pilgrim), Monday, 11 July 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

The Exciters-"Tell Him" (or to be obscure, their "Blowing Up My Mind" which has some great, great lyrics)

Marxism Goes Better With Coke (Charles McCain), Monday, 11 July 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

"Love Machine"

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 11 July 2005 17:27 (twenty years ago)

Shangri-Las, "Heaven Only Knows"

mike a, Monday, 11 July 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

i hear a symphony seconded! or my world is empty without you.

and who sang that song with a chorus like "gonna walk right up to him and give him a great big kiss, mwuh"

b b, Monday, 11 July 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

Shangri-La's! Shamelessly dropped by yrs truly upthread

Jimmy Mod Is Sick of Being The Best At Everything (ModJ), Monday, 11 July 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

Oh, I love "Tell Him" and "A Lover's Concerto" by the Toys. I'm planning to buy the Spector set, too.

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Monday, 11 July 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

an email requesting the spector box be burnt and sent and plans to pick up the best of the shangri-las are now in place...

i have "tell him" on some random mix cd that somehow ended up in my kitchen like 3 yrs ago and consitstantly forget to figure out who it is, despite a bad sonic youth habit and hearing the NY Dolls cover on a regular basis in a certain bar on Ave. B.

thanks

b b, Monday, 11 July 2005 19:32 (twenty years ago)

Then He Kissed me is my all time fave, but you know what's really awesome? Fallin in Love by American Spring. It's the Honey's i.e. Brian Wilson's wife and cousin or her sister I forget, and it's amazing.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 11 July 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

OPF: the Baby Dolls' "Don't Rush Me," Margaret Mandolph's "I Wanna Make You Happy," Shirley Matthews' "Big Town Boy," the Royalettes' "It's Gonna Taka a Miracle."

merritt ranew (merritt), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

Shangri-Las, "Heaven Only Knows"

that's a great one, but it's better if you're in love when you hear it.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Monday, 11 July 2005 22:14 (twenty years ago)

'My Boyfriend's Back'

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 02:09 (twenty years ago)

Martha and the Vandellas - "A Love Like Your's Don't Come Knocking Every Day"

Burr (Burr), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 02:26 (twenty years ago)

Remember Walking on the Sand?

My Boyfriend's Back (vocal performance especially)

My first CD I wanted was some compilation of chart hits from Fall 1962-63

Motown: Heat Wave, Back in my Arms Again (which is probably a copy of This Old Heart of Mine)

Cunga (Cunga), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 02:32 (twenty years ago)

Do I have to only pick one?
Because the Supreme's Love Child is right up there too
This is too hard.

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 02:36 (twenty years ago)

"The Shoop Shoop Song"--does that count? It's on Rhino's girl group comp even though it's a solo cut. Anyway, it owns.
-- Keith C

Exactly what I was gonna say! Including the "does it count?" proviso.

If it doesn't count, then "Lover's Concerto". (I heart Bach-rock.) A choice made easier by my refusal to nominate any Motown performers, because...well, just because.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 03:15 (twenty years ago)

Just for Tonight - The Chiffons

I had never even heard this until I bought a comp a few months ago.

jim wentworth (wench), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 03:20 (twenty years ago)

"lover's concerto" is wonderful.

president carter loves repetition (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 03:28 (twenty years ago)

"maybe" by the chantels: arguably the first girl group song, and possibly also the LOUDEST.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 03:54 (twenty years ago)

Shangri-Las-"Give Him a Great Big Kiss"

C0L1N B... (C0L1N B...), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 03:55 (twenty years ago)

Hanson - "mmmbob"
omg see what i did there?!

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 03:59 (twenty years ago)

Get the song title wrong?

BARMS, Tuesday, 12 July 2005 09:26 (twenty years ago)

Shangri-Las, "Heaven Only Knows"
that's a great one, but it's better if you're in love when you hear it.

True enough. I would pick "Right Now and Not Later" or "It's Easier To Cry" (amazing drumming on that one) from the Shangri-Las catalog for those times when you're not in love.

Just remembered "Nowhere to Run" by Martha Reeves & The Vandellas. And "Love Is Like An Itching In My Heart" by the Supremes - it's got amazing production.

mike a, Tuesday, 12 July 2005 12:08 (twenty years ago)

Sugababes - 'Soul Sound'

BARMS, Tuesday, 12 July 2005 13:45 (twenty years ago)

Honey Cone - "Stick Up" is my pick

"But he'll return to
The scene of the crime
I'll set a tender trap
He'll be unaware
I'll wear a smile down the aisle
Cause he's the father of my child"

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 17:39 (twenty years ago)

Thought someone would have mentioned "When Will I See You Again" by now.

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/01/arts/music/shes-got-the-power-at-lincoln-center-review.html?ref=arts

On Saturday afternoon the rock archivists of the Ponderosa Stomp and Lincoln Center Out of Doors presented a fond four-hour marathon of girl-group songs from the early 1960s, sung by the women who made them.

Headlined by Ronnie Spector, Lesley Gore and LaLa Brooks (of the Crystals), the concert also brought back names that drift by on oldies stations: the Exciters, the Jaynetts, the Angels, the Cookies, the Toys, the Chantels, Reparata and the Delrons, Maxine Brown, Baby Washington, Beverly Warren.

curmudgeon, Monday, 1 August 2011 14:44 (fourteen years ago)

Like M&Ms, impossible to pick just one. Several favorites already mentioned - the Exciters "Tell Him" and the Dixie Cups "People Say." Didn't see enough love for the Marvelettes. I'd go with "Danger Heartbreak Dead Ahead."

that's not my post, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 05:54 (fourteen years ago)

up down sue

Who? Well, I've never heard of Mogwai. (electricsound), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 05:57 (fourteen years ago)
