This thread also makes me think of 'Plug' by Sloy, a French band.

I listened to this record loads while annoying my Shellac loving pals by disingenuously maintaining they were far better, this is an Albini recording and you can hear why they used him, but it's still a fun listen.

Maybe somewhere between Shellac and the Breeders first record.

Huh, I knew a (different) band called Difference Engine back in the '90s.

I'm guessing this is yet another Difference Engine than the one I randomly encountered taking band photos in a laundromat in Rolling Meadows, Illinois back in 2001.

Odd cause discogs doesn't have that many different Difference Engines, and I'm not sure what kind of better, different search engine to rely on to parse the differences in different Difference Engines.

Ha, I'm not sure I can offer much more clarity, these guys walked in to the laundromat, had a guy take a few photos and walk back out. I talked to one guy briefly, who told me their band was called "Difference Engine" but didn't offer up anything further. I searched their name when I got back home later that day, but iirc didn't come up with much.

Speaking of 90s names, I do recall some buzz around Hammerbox, but couldn't keep it straight from the buzz around Clawhammer, Hammerhead, Jawbox, or Jawbreaker so never checked out any of them.
