Sugababes - "Push The Button"/"Ugly"

They're out there now. Let's talk about them!

"Push The Button" is great! Naggingly annoying verses that are miles better than the not-bad-at-all chorus. Much better lead-off single than "Hole In The Head" anyway.

"Ugly" is also very good.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 11 August 2005 07:44 (twenty years ago)

YSI! YSI!

carson dial (carson dial), Thursday, 11 August 2005 08:05 (twenty years ago)

Naggingly annoying? NAGGINGLY CATCHY. Tch, Edward, learn to type.

Ugly:
http://s18.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1QD83ZWUPA1FK2OW410WSHI9UF

(has cunts talking over the end of it. The "huge mistake" is probably that they meant to play a different song, meaning the likely second single is now all over the net. However, the sampler will leak any day now, so who cares)

A bit "Unpretty"-esque in theme, BUT! there's this amazing bit from 2:40-2:55 that's straight out of something else and is really wonderful and such! The piano, particularly. Could someone please identify it?

Push The Button later, my bandwidth a tad precious at the moment, it's all over file-sharers, it should be 3:34-ish in length.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 11 August 2005 08:23 (twenty years ago)

Edward, you make the world go round, again.

This is fantastic and surprising, I was expecting something very gleaming and hyper-cyber-metallic, but, "Unpretty", yes. It's almost like a really really really good Texas single. But with their voices. A really good one, though.

The way the drum bit snakes up halfway through the first verse reminds me a LOT of something else too, I'm thinking the end of "Life Goes Off" by Jim O'Rourke, but that is mental, and not right.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Thursday, 11 August 2005 09:49 (twenty years ago)

which one is the Animotion robber?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 11 August 2005 09:57 (twenty years ago)

I miss the days of sonically weird shiny cyberpop :(

'Ugly' is OK but kind of hard to take when EVERY pop act is taking the guitar road. When is pop going to start taking its cues from cutting edge dance rather than boring rock again?

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 11 August 2005 10:00 (twenty years ago)

(if the whole album is in this vein I may revise my opinion a bit, but in isolation it is delicious, if not very single-y)

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Thursday, 11 August 2005 10:03 (twenty years ago)

These are both (I think) Dallas Austin tracks. There's some Xenomania on there, tho.

Oh, heeeeere's Push The Button. I wuv it. I think it's their best single since "Round Round". It's so... simplistic in a way, much the way "Overload" was basically the same thing over and over again texturally, and is great.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 11 August 2005 10:12 (twenty years ago)

It is purest froth and it is the most colourful thing they have ever done, and the least self-consciously 'classy'. It might be my single-of-year, I will give it 42 plays and then see.

If "Milkshake" was all attack then this is the sustain/release chunk, and you could slot them together and have one fantastic full-bodied track, but in isolation from one another they are both doubly unusual and extraordinary. Especially this. You can hear them SMILING.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Thursday, 11 August 2005 10:53 (twenty years ago)

it sounds quite old fashioned

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 11 August 2005 10:58 (twenty years ago)

'Push The Button' is more like it!

'Milkshake' is a good reference point. So is the DJ Koze remix of 'Hot Love', in a tangential rhythm/froth kind of way.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 11 August 2005 11:18 (twenty years ago)

!!!!!!!!!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 11 August 2005 11:31 (twenty years ago)

Daver OTM. Probably.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 11 August 2005 11:35 (twenty years ago)

There's a bit in "Push the Button" (the bit starting from the line "I've been waiting patiently...") that sort of makes me want to burst into a verse of Tina Turner's "The Best."

I'm not sure how I feel about that.

brittle-lemon (brittle-lemon), Thursday, 11 August 2005 12:50 (twenty years ago)

Also before the first chorus they say something like "...cash this opportunity so you and me Caerphilly" and my friend Vicky is from Caerphilly, and is the SPIT of Heidi, this is no coincidence.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Thursday, 11 August 2005 12:53 (twenty years ago)

Basically, it's all about:

MY SEXY ASS HAS GOT HIM IN A NEW DIMENSION.

Best lyric of 2005.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 11 August 2005 12:54 (twenty years ago)

it sounds quite old fashioned
It sounds like a lot of what was playing in the US in the immediate post-grunge years. I haven't had enough coffee yet to figure out exactly what songs it reminds me of, but the sound is very 1998 guitar pop.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 11 August 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

"Push My Button" is baby-"Lose My Breath"! even. This record has made my week.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Thursday, 11 August 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

My banging is all anticipatory, BTW.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 11 August 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

I hope they're paying Missing Persons for that ascending chorus buildup in "Push My Button".

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 11 August 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

Oh hell, I gotta get home and download, like, NOW NOW NOW.

BARMS, Thursday, 11 August 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

So is the DJ Koze remix of 'Hot Love', in a tangential rhythm/froth kind of way.

good call!

i've only heard te first minute, on crappy laptop speakers, but it sounds pretty good.

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 11 August 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

Oh. My. God.

There is a song on the Sugababes album called "Joy Division".

JOY DIVISION. I feel like I just had a little mental orgasm in anticipation.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 11 August 2005 23:33 (twenty years ago)

"Push the Button" is excellent.. way better than that shitty Girls Aloud single.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 19:25 (twenty years ago)

...that shitty Girls Aloud single

urge to kill... RISING!!!

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

Could someone please YSI both tracks again? I missed them the first time around...

a. begrand (a begrand), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, reup please?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

I think the topic has been revived because "Push the button" is on Fluxblog, so check there.

brittle-lemon (brittle-lemon), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 22:03 (twenty years ago)

so did Emma from the Delgados work on these tracks, or is that still forthcoming?

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 22:07 (twenty years ago)

I think that, sadly, was either a Popbitch fabrication, or maybe she said no. She's signed with (o no!) 4AD, anyway.

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 22:49 (twenty years ago)

"Push the Button" is excellent.. way better than that shitty Girls Aloud single.
-- The Brainwasher (teignmout...), August 24th, 2005.

Urge to say "OTM"...RISING!!

BARMS, Thursday, 25 August 2005 10:55 (twenty years ago)

Barima, you HURT ME IN MY HEART over and over again :(

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 25 August 2005 10:59 (twenty years ago)

i was way disppointed. by both.

piscesboy, Thursday, 25 August 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

I'm tired of having to listen to shitty rips of pop singles for months before I hear them properly. Next time one of these leaks as a radio rip can we just ignore it please?

In the new singles pop-off, Rachel Stevens > Tatu > Girls Aloud and Sugababes, can't tell because the Sugababes one hasn't leaked properly.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 25 August 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

The version of "Push the button" on Fluxblog seems non radio-rip to me.

Push the Button slightly > Long Hot Summer > I Said Never Again > All About Us

brittle-lemon (brittle-lemon), Friday, 26 August 2005 00:23 (twenty years ago)

I can't seem to complete a listen of 'All About Us', but it's probably in 3rd for me. Rachel's single is very good, but treads the walk of the derivative and unimaginative a little (in which I find myself agreeing with Marcello). 'Push The Button' just got listened to twice today and I love its coquettish 'All I Want For Christmas'/'Simply The Best' teen-pop electro ways.

BARMS, Friday, 26 August 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

At first I thought 'Push The Button' was too Atomic Kitten but after living with it for a week I think it's a 00s 'Frankie' or 'Morning Train (Nine To Five)'. Jolly good. And they've never looked hotttter than in the PTB video. Is Mutya actually wearing hotpants are they just hot pants?!

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 10:25 (twenty years ago)

keisha is so hot .
there could be a dvd soon.

sugababy, Wednesday, 31 August 2005 11:02 (twenty years ago)

OK I'm getting a bit concerned about how 'Push The Button' hasn't left my head all day now.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 11:49 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
i love 'push the button'. heidi has the right kind of taste in men.

N_RQ, Thursday, 15 September 2005 13:54 (twenty years ago)

i think heidi had a wardrobe malfunction in that vid, as usual.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 15 September 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

why does it remind me of 'last christmas' by wham?

N_RQ, Thursday, 15 September 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

I said that, too!

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 15 September 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

TS: Reminders of 'Last Christmas' vs reminders of 'All I Want For Christmas'.

BARMS, Thursday, 15 September 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

is it just me or can you almost sing private dancer to push the button ?

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Friday, 23 September 2005 23:36 (twenty years ago)

I love this song!

I've heard half of the tracks from 'Taller In More Ways' and there isn't a single one I don't like!

This CD had better do well! We need more Sugababes!

Dan_89, Thursday, 29 September 2005 12:51 (twenty years ago)

Aside from the fact that it makes me dance in an embarrassing way, it (would) totally deserve(s) to be #1.

brittle-lemon (brittle-lemon), Thursday, 29 September 2005 12:55 (twenty years ago)

anyone heard the single b-sides "Favourite Song" & "Like the Weather"? is the latter the 10,000 Maniacs song?

zebedee (zebedee), Thursday, 29 September 2005 13:08 (twenty years ago)

Apparently not. In fact it seems to be cowritten with Cathy Dennis and Guy Sigsworth.

But the 'Babes do cover Animotion's "Obsession" for the album, though.

brittle-lemon (brittle-lemon), Thursday, 29 September 2005 14:23 (twenty years ago)

the album is pretty good. much better when it grows on you rather than on initial listen, which seems to be how the 'babes operate these days.

'bruised' = one of the best pop songs ever ever ever for me right now.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 29 September 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

You'll be able to read my Sugababes album review in Time Out next week (if you live in London, that is). Suffice to say for now that it's a corker.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 30 September 2005 07:03 (twenty years ago)

sexy girls , hot song , racy video.

-- brittle-lemon (brittlelemo...), September 29th, 2005.
i hope this becomes a single with a raunchy video.
"what do you want me to be to make you sleep with me "

mr buchanan, Friday, 30 September 2005 08:03 (twenty years ago)

I've only heard a clip of "Obsession," but it's not as great as I imagine. It has acidesque squelchy nosies in the background, which are great, but somehow it feels to me like the girls' voices are too low for the song.

Plus, after you have a line like "my ass has got him in a new dimension," the Animotion lyric is a children's fairtyale in comparison.

brittle-lemon (brittle-lemon), Friday, 30 September 2005 12:50 (twenty years ago)

My SEXY ass has got him in a new dimension.

Flyboy (Flyboy), Friday, 30 September 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

snowballing (snowballing), Thursday, 6 October 2005 15:26 (twenty years ago)

and there's a track called Joy Division.

snowballing (snowballing), Thursday, 6 October 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

My Time Out review is reassuringly much better than the dreaded/dreadful one in today's Grauniad by guess who?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 7 October 2005 07:02 (twenty years ago)

'Red Dress' is sort of their 'The Show', I think, re. artful slippery elaborate non-structure (and being pretty awesomely flawless, obv).

I have only four tracks and think perhaps I will wait until Monday for the rest, so I can 'do' this album properly (as albums were 'done' in olden daye thymes)

Alex in Sheffield (Alex in Doncaster), Friday, 7 October 2005 07:23 (twenty years ago)

Ah, you don't get Time Out in Sheffield, so you won't get to read my summary of "Red Dress" as a marriage between 23 Skidoo and the Sooty/Braden Showband...

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 7 October 2005 07:25 (twenty years ago)

They stock London Time Out in WHSmith in Doncaster, for reasons that I have never fully understood, so, wizzzzard.

Alex in Sheffield (Alex in Doncaster), Friday, 7 October 2005 07:36 (twenty years ago)

Um, David Davis? Really tho', if you ever wrote something worse than Petridish's miserable efforts, you'd have to cut off your hands to prevent you from typing ever again.

baboon2004 (baboon2004), Friday, 7 October 2005 13:55 (twenty years ago)

"obsession" is an original song, unfortunately...:(

william, it was really nothing (superpopelectro), Friday, 7 October 2005 15:51 (twenty years ago)

push the button
no button is bad

firstworldman (firstworldman), Friday, 7 October 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)

My main problem with "Push the Button" is every time the "I've been waiting patiently for him to come and get it." bit comes on, I keep singing "On the prairie pavement, losing proposition. Quittin' school and going to work and never goin' fishing." and then I want to hear that song instead.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Friday, 7 October 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

haven't seen this mentioned anywhere but "Red Dress" quotes the horn riff from Tony Clarke's Northern classic "Landslide"

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

""obsession" is an original song, unfortunately...:(

??? It is a cover of Animotion.

brittle-lemon (brittle-lemon), Thursday, 13 October 2005 00:03 (twenty years ago)

Yes, the one really duff track on the album. Animotion's original was a classic example of someone trying to do someone else (i.e. the Human League) and making a complete hash of it but accidentally inventing something new in the process. I love the stupid genius of the original version, but the Sugababes version is ironed out a little too blandly.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 13 October 2005 06:30 (twenty years ago)

'better' is also a dud, surely?

has no one else noticed that 'it ain't easy' = 'personal jesus'?

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 13 October 2005 08:35 (twenty years ago)

You're about the 208th person to notice that.

"Better" isn't a dud, it's great! Frank Ifield sings Samuel Beckett! "This is the sound of falling apart" with yodelling!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 13 October 2005 08:40 (twenty years ago)

well i've not seen anyone else post it on the internet!

i don't remember any yodelling on 'better', but than i don't remember anything about 'better'. maybe another listen is called for, but i find that between 'follow me home' and '2 hearts' i have all the lush ballad action i need from the sugababes: they're better at the swooning, post-babyface ballads than the acoustic stuff, i find.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 13 October 2005 08:48 (twenty years ago)

I'll have to agree that the acoustic stuff isn't a strong point - luckily, they don't really do many acoustic songs in the first place.

I am totally loving 'Obsession' and don't care if I'm the only one who does.

Is this gonna be the album thread, then? It needs feeding.

BARMS, Thursday, 13 October 2005 18:50 (twenty years ago)

i was all 'what is this animotion people speak of, is it well known?', then i overheard the sugababes version and realised it was on that richard x thing and i'd played it 20 times (sez itunes).

N_RQ, Monday, 17 October 2005 08:19 (twenty years ago)

three weeks pass...
So while my friends were standing around on Bonfire Night, complaining about the "radio music" that was accompanying the Musselburgh fireworks (and to be honest it was a pretty shine accompaniment), I was busy trying to remember the lyrics to the song that was playing so that I could get home, google and download it. And it was "Push the Button". It is exceedingly awesome!
