Don't really know the backstory on this, but it seems worth a thread. What is going on? What's the story with the disastrous performances? Why did I not go and see them when I had the chance? Answers, rumours, medical reports much appreciated.

Saw Love three times in recent years; it was amazing. But in the back of my mind I asked myself, "What's a hardcore motherfucker like Arthur Lee doing with these kids?" You knew it wasn't gonna last unless he got some pirates in the band.

Outsider Enter Port City (sexyDancer), Thursday, 11 August 2005 13:41 (twenty years ago)

I don't know when he started working with Arther Lee again, but John Echols was actually in the band that recorded Love, Da Capo and Forever Changes.

Nevertheless, does he really believe that anyone's actually going to be any more interested in him now than they have been at any other time since Arther Lee dumped him and the rest of the original Love in 1968?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 11 August 2005 13:54 (twenty years ago)

I doubt he's doing much of anything other than shitting his pants and trying to fufill obligations.

Outsider Enter Port City (sexyDancer), Thursday, 11 August 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

If Johnny Echols is making some money at last then that's fine by me

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Dada), Thursday, 11 August 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

I don't disagree at all - I just think that (certainly while Arthur Lee's still about) he's far more likely to find himself operating at the nostalgia / tribute band end of the market than (to pick an example entirely at random, obv.) he is to emulate the (I think) extraordinary and (afaik) unprecedented levels of success that The Magic Band are currently enjoying without Don.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 11 August 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

I think Arthur had just about milked that particular cash cow to death - Christ, he was almost playing London as often as Brian Wilson!

(I still can't help but wish Bill Harkleroad had stuck with the programme and ended up enjoying that success instead of Gary Lucas 'tho')

(xx-post)

"I think Arthur had just about milked that particular cash cow to death - Christ, he was almost playing London as often as Brian Wilson!"

Exactly - so how much meat does John Echols think is left to pick off that particular carcass?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 11 August 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

Magic Band really doing *that* well without thee other Don, Stewart? I wish them well, but the album recorded during rehearsals ( a preview of their act) was pretty good, as an intro, but pointless enough otherwise that I don't know that I'd go see 'em. Although it would be hotter live--okay I'd go (once).

don, Thursday, 11 August 2005 20:24 (twenty years ago)

No seriously, go. I was hardly expecting much when I went to see them last month, and I came away more elated than I've felt after a show for a while. 'Kandy Korn'! Really, then into 'Hair Pie'! Drumbo's drumming! It was absolutely stunning. There is very little music that can be stripped of its most vital, unifying element and yet still have a life of its own. It's a weird thing that can't really be compared to the above situation with Love. But I'm very happy it exists.

myopic_void (myopic_void), Thursday, 11 August 2005 22:39 (twenty years ago)

Yeah? They *have* playing live for a while now, haven't they?Must be tight. What the heck, i'd go see Leeless "The Love Band" too. But xpost is the Magic Band really making that much money? Hope so.

don, Friday, 12 August 2005 02:58 (twenty years ago)

Hell yeah, I'd go. I still say they should get Mark E. Smith as their new singer and start working on new material.

"David Chapple: Bass Guitar / Harmonica"

So THAT's where he's been!!!

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 12 August 2005 05:02 (twenty years ago)

You haven't lived until you've had Arthur Lee pull a knife on you, and once you have...

Ian Christe (Ian Christe), Friday, 12 August 2005 05:37 (twenty years ago)

Well, he's the only important one on that stage...

How long before the Wondermints sack Brian?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 12 August 2005 06:02 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, but I empathize with the guys in that band. They've been playing that music for a long time (since the early '90s, I believe) and if people perceive them as a valid incarnation of Love still putting on shows doing Love music than so be it.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 12 August 2005 06:08 (twenty years ago)

Like Mike Love and the "Beach Boys."

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 12 August 2005 06:18 (twenty years ago)

Like Mike Love and the "Beach Boys."

Perhaps Mike Love should join Love and do some creative rewriting of Forever Changes, perhaps retitling it Pantie Changes.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 12 August 2005 06:19 (twenty years ago)

"Magic Band really doing *that* well without thee other Don, Stewart?"

Well, they all say they've been absolutely overwhelmed by the response to what actually started off pretty much as a one-off, and have been gigging away pretty consistently ever since.

"I wish them well, but the album recorded during rehearsals ( a preview of their act) was pretty good, as an intro, but pointless enough otherwise that I don't know that I'd go see 'em."

They obviously haven't been doing that well then - at least, not on the marketing side anyway - 'cos they've actually released

"Although it would be hotter live--okay I'd go (once)."

Oh you really should, they're genuinely great - I've been (three times).

As an extra special unadvertised bonus, you can actually see me, my gf and my mate Ben in the video.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 12 August 2005 07:44 (twenty years ago)

ha ha people have known Arthur was a psycho for 40 years! what did they expect?

I saw Arthur Lee /Baby Lemonade in London in 2002(?) and they were great, but y'know how many times can you play those 23 old songs without getting totally and utterly sick of them?

It's sad that the guitarist is saying that Arthur's new songs are awful. Also sad that they are calling themselves 'the love band', kind of hard to sympathise with their plight considering they are making a living playing arthur's songs... they should call themselves 'baby lemonade with johnny echols'

grosvenor lucrece, Friday, 12 August 2005 09:05 (twenty years ago)

They should be restricted to playing the songs Johnny Echols co-wrote - but would anyone pay to see a two-song set?!?!?!!

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Dada), Friday, 12 August 2005 09:07 (twenty years ago)

would anyone pay to see love without arthur lee? (considering arthur's voice is still strong and clear and doesn't need backing up with 18 part harmonies like brian wilson's?) not much point IMO

they should bite the bullet and play the two echols songs, recruit tijay canterelli, rehearse a baby lemonade set and play upstairs at pubs. get over themselves.

grosvenor lucrece, Friday, 12 August 2005 09:10 (twenty years ago)

What's Snoopy up to these days? Any chance of getting that harpsichord out of hock?

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Dada), Friday, 12 August 2005 09:13 (twenty years ago)

two months pass...
Tjay Cantrelli is dead.

Love = Most ironic band name of all time. They could easily have called themselves Hate.

Marty Balin said that very thing, ("...'cause they're nasty and beat people up") way back in the day, as reported by R. Meltzer in "The Aesthetics Of Rock".

As I say, I saw a webcast of the Benicassim appearance.

Very sad.

Nothing like the "Forever Changes" DVD which is wonderful.
