seven-minute version of "ann"!! sensibly pared-down outtakes from the complete fun house sessions box!!

I will buy both, because I am a sucker.

haitch has some respect for artists (haitch), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

Since I've been sleeping on owning any Stooges stuff outside Raw Power for way too long, why not?

donut ferry (donut), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 00:33 (twenty years ago)

I hope they're not in those packages were you can't fit them in the CD holder, then you have to put them in the pile of Box Sets and weird Digi-Packs. That would suck.

Voodoo Child, Tuesday, 16 August 2005 00:36 (twenty years ago)

If it's like the other official Deluxe Edition 2CDs, then don't worry.

donut ferry (donut), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 00:49 (twenty years ago)

I have ordered mine, but I asked for the new Bjork disc in the same order, so they're holding 'em for a week and shipping it all at once.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 01:03 (twenty years ago)

I don't want a pared down version of the Fun House box, I want an expanded one. 20 CDs plz.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 01:21 (twenty years ago)

i'm so fucking on the s/t reissue.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 02:12 (twenty years ago)

Doesn't it seem silly for there to be a "Deluxe Edition" of a punk rock album?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 03:10 (twenty years ago)

No.

Voodoo Child, Tuesday, 16 August 2005 03:24 (twenty years ago)

So not punk.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 03:27 (twenty years ago)

Really and truely, it isn't really punk. They wanted to be big fuckin' rock stars. If you have ever read "Please Kill Me" then you would know.

Voodoo Child, Tuesday, 16 August 2005 03:30 (twenty years ago)

That doesn't excuse putting out a "Deluxe Edition" of your album like you're Fleetwood Mac, though.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 03:38 (twenty years ago)

But does that allow DJ Shadow to deluxe his album? It doesn't matter what genre, I want more of an album that's fuckin good.

Voodoo Child, Tuesday, 16 August 2005 03:39 (twenty years ago)

Part of what I don't like about it is that an album is conceived as a particular thing. Putting out "Deluxe Editions" of things treats albums like they're just a bunch of data to which they've added a bunch more data.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 03:45 (twenty years ago)

I've always thought of it as more akin to critical editions of books- the original text/album, a bunch of stuff to give you some context and hopefully a deeper understanding of the original, and in the case of remastering, maybe re-set in a better typeface or something, I don't know, the analogy kind of breaks down there.

Telephonething (Telephonething), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 03:50 (twenty years ago)

They're easy as much (more actually) a metal as a punk band anyways

A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 03:52 (twenty years ago)

Well I always think Bonus Tracks or Alternate Studio Outtakes are good. It make you think.

Voodoo Child, Tuesday, 16 August 2005 03:55 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, but there's a difference between Proust's Rememberance of Things Past and a Stooges album.

2x-post

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 03:56 (twenty years ago)

cue "yeah, the Stooges don't SUCK" response

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 04:00 (twenty years ago)

You could say anythingyou want, and I do sort of agree that it's not a Punk thing to Deluxe your album, but The Stooges is one of my favorite albums and I'm sure a lot of people would agree that they'd like to hear bonus tracks from an amazing, groundbreaking album.

Let's hope Raw Power's next.

Voodoo Child, Tuesday, 16 August 2005 04:02 (twenty years ago)

For your twenty bucks with the first album, you get:

Five alternate mixes of tracks from the album
Three tracks with different vocal takes (how different can they be?)
Two "full versions" ("Ann" and "No Fun")

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 04:15 (twenty years ago)

Trust me, if you were brainwashed by Iggy Pop, you'd pay $50.

Voodoo Child, Tuesday, 16 August 2005 04:16 (twenty years ago)

hmmmm...I just listened to Fun House the other day and thought "I wish these grooves went on for a lot longer..." Maybe the remaster will satisfy the urge?

Scott CE (Scott CE), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 04:52 (twenty years ago)

Jesus Christ, how long ago did Iggy Pop stop being "punk" anyway? This thread turn is just fucking ridiculous.

donut ferry (donut), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 05:39 (twenty years ago)

I guess that makes the Beatles more punk than anybody else! Since they didn't even remaster their catalog since 1987... "THE GREATEST BAND EVER" too.

donut ferry (donut), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 05:40 (twenty years ago)

Given that "punk" originally meant "a guy who takes it up the ass in prison", you can project that analogy onto the Deluxe Edition of these album in various ways... Case closed.

donut ferry (donut), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 05:42 (twenty years ago)

Oh, go listen to your Fleetwood Mac gold plated quadrophonic compact disques, muso! (Joke.)

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 05:49 (twenty years ago)

heh, I actually don't own any Mac..

But is there anything less punk about Deluxe Editions vs. 7-CD Box set releases?

donut ferry (donut), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 05:55 (twenty years ago)

(you claiming you desired a 20 CD box set above and all)

donut ferry (donut), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 05:56 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, I was joking there, too.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 06:00 (twenty years ago)

Alternate takes of "We Will Fall"? OH JOY!

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 06:22 (twenty years ago)

That one isn't happening... (is it?)

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 06:41 (twenty years ago)

Heh heh...

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 06:42 (twenty years ago)

(just saw them this lunchtime. It's not.)

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 12:21 (twenty years ago)

(going to pick these up at $15.99 each very soon)

donut ferry (donut), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

The Cale mixes on the debut's bonus disc are friggin' WEIRD.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 01:43 (twenty years ago)

I'm kind of interested now!

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 02:13 (twenty years ago)

I am in the middle of downloading the normal versions - that's not very punk either.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 07:18 (twenty years ago)

The Cale mixes on the debut's bonus disc are friggin' WEIRD

I thought they were just a little more defined. Handclaps louder, some Iggy imprecations that weren't in the originals, a guitar mixed uncommercially louder or without as much reverb that moved it back in the mix on a solo. The booklet described these as rejected because they were too "arty" which they weren't at all. I felt they were pretty conservative.

George the Animal Steele, Wednesday, 17 August 2005 07:21 (twenty years ago)

still no studio versions of "Dogfood" huh?

how bout a live DVD bootleg of the nationally televised Stooges performance at the 1970 Cincinnati Pop Festival w/Grand Funk Alice Cooper (wrapped in a bedsheet) & Traffic, hosted by Jack Lescoulie ? blew my tender 12 year old mind. there really needs to be a Stooges documentary history a la the MC5 movie

if nothing else Ron & Scott Asheton could probably use a few buckx.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 12:05 (twenty years ago)

So could Iggy!

Diddyismus (Dada), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 12:10 (twenty years ago)

"That's peanut butter!"

k/l (Ken L), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 12:58 (twenty years ago)

classic. that video gives me goosebumps every time i see it, that moment iggy climbs on top of the crowd and does this little bodybuilder routine followed by 'the pose': whoa. thanks to whoever posted that link on the fun house thread.

willem (willem), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

U fuXX0Rs got me again!

k/l (Ken L), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

I'm [listening to the fourth alternate take of] loose!

k/l (Ken L), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

Have any of you Fun House box set owners disovered the hidden eye, by the way?

get all the CD's out of the box, push out the little flap on the "Style
No: 74071 / Color: Aliminum / ..." side, look at it from the outside.

Is that an easter eye?

The remasters rule (the second Fun House disc won't replace the full box set, but the Stooges bonus disc is very nice)!
