More Ebay Madness

So a couple of months ago I bid a couple of $ on a 7" from a seller in the US. I won the item, request total with shipping, as you do. Seller tries to charge me $13 shipping. This is over double the usual amount. I protest, he opens a "Buyer refuses to pay" complaint against me. I point out Ebay rules have a provision against Excessive Shipping Charges, and I think this counts as excessive.

After that, nothing for over a month until a couple of days ago. Now he's gone completely insane and has started accusing me of fraud, and claiming to live in the US when I obviously don't. This is all extremely amusing because at no point did I ever claim any of this! He's going to try and report me to Ebay AND Paypal. I don't really give a shit, I've got no negative feedback before and you're allowed 3 non-payment strikes before you're banned from Ebay, so whatever. This guy had 14 negatives in the last month.

So, this is the thread for your tales of dealing with idiots on Ebay (or other mailorder/auction sites)!

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 22 September 2005 11:16 (twenty years ago)

well, i've bid on a watch some months ago, won the item and got a message from the seller saying he'd send it soon... then nothing. never replied to mails, all of a sudden, all his buyers started to complain while he was like a power seller before, ebay/paypal couldn't reach him (so they refund me), his account was closed. i think the guy may have died or something !

AleXTC (AleXTC), Thursday, 22 September 2005 11:24 (twenty years ago)

This one makes me laugh everytime. It's part of a batshit crazy series of e-mails my wife received when she left negative feedback for someone who misrepresented a poster she purchased:

Dear Madam,
Whatever you tried by returning the item, the lawsuit has started. against eBay and you.
Our Attorneys will sue in Brussels, Belgium it will go all the way to European Court of Human Rights.
It's the feedback who is the point of discussion.
Not the product.
We are constantly in communication with eBay Benelux, about this. And they reply.
You, have used the eBay feedback , as YOU wished,WHEN YOU WISHED, and as a "Terror Weapon", and a Weapon to damage the reputation of a seller who was 100%, on top of his product and the shipping.
I will "NOT" stop the lawsuit.
America who went to war against terrorism, has created a new terror weapon in the form of the eBay feedback system. A Weapon used at random , by an American Citizen, in casu YOU.
You may feel safe now, but the damages are coming your way.
You can't repair the feedback. We can only drag the complete thing to Court, and that is what we WILL do.
eBay is aware of the fact that you abused the feedback system.
If "YOU" want to get out if this High Profile battle, you can always leave a SINCERE remark, that the feedback was a mistake, a misunderstanding.
Your time is limited.
In that case you are OUT of the lawsuit, and it is only between eBay and us.
If you go to site map , you can leave a "follow up" to your remark under the feedback you left.
I suggest for your sake, as time is running out, the following text:
This negative feedback was a mistake from my part, I'm Sorry.
It's better to overwin your ego, than goig the next years of your life through expensive lawsuits.
The apology is 5 minutes of your time and is FREE of charge, and you make yourself UNTOUCHABLE in Court.
And NO claim is possible against your person.
Just go to Site Map on eBay's Home page and click on:
Review feedback you have left about others
Remember , BE CLEAR with what you say. It will save you lots of stress.
This is good advice from a 53 year old/young person, who knows eBay in and out.
Sinderely yours,
Gilbert A. Lambert

I had someone "die" on me once. I bought a couple 16mm films from this guy.. not cheap, maybe $60 total with shipping? Anyway, two months pass and he's got my money. So I e-mail him once or twice, polite, but a little ticked off that he's completely ignoring me. I notice a bunch of negatives come in and figure i've been gypped, no biggie.

So like a year later I get an e-mail from this woman who tells me that she is the wife of the seller and she is sorting through his personal affairs. Turns out he was hit by a car, went into a coma, and she can't find the films. So she paypals me back the $60 odd dollars and apologized profusely. Poor guy. I hope he came out of it.

Mookie Wilson (mookie wilson), Thursday, 22 September 2005 13:55 (twenty years ago)

hum. sad... I think that could be a good idea to develop for a movie !

AleXTC (AleXTC), Thursday, 22 September 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

ng-unit - that IS hilarious. I might post some of my guy's rantings later. He just left me negative feedback, so at least it's over with now.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 22 September 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

Col. Poo, I know this is really obvious, but if they don't have shipping prices listed, you should always ask someone how much shipping will be before bidding. If they can't give you an answer, don't bid. I just got overcharged for shipping. The actual postage price on what I received was much much less than what they charged. I don't mind a dollar or two or three over the actual postage price for handling/packing (I do this. My postage price is about two dollars over actual postage. i sell records and i use good bags and boxes that cost me money, so i work that into the price. I use Global Priority for overseas, and i charge everyone, no matter where they are, 11 dollars. It never costs me less than 8 dollars to send it that way. Sometimes, it costs me 12. Nobody has ever had a problem with it. I have just started charging 3 dollars for media mail in the states instead of priority cuz i figure this will entice people more than paying priority prices.sending one record via media mail usually costs around 2 dollars.) Anyway, the people who overcharged me, i almost didn't bid on their stuff because they had "private feedback" and 3 or 4 negatives. I don't think they should have the private feedback option. it's insane.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 22 September 2005 14:09 (twenty years ago)

Can anyone think of a good reason for private feedback?

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 22 September 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

As I mentioned on another thread, there are people who make ALL their profits from shipping charges. They sell CDs for a penny and charge 4 dollars shipping. They pocket 3 dollars a cd. Most of these people plainly state their shipping costs though. I only really have a problem with people who say something will cost 20 dollars and it actually costs 8 or something, or that they are sending something priority and it comes parcel post. that is a crime.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 22 September 2005 14:15 (twenty years ago)

Private feedback says to me I'm a dodgy git, don't trust me coz I'll stiff you as soon as look at you and don't expect me to give you a refund you gullible wanker. So I suppose in that respect it's quite useful.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 22 September 2005 14:16 (twenty years ago)

"Can anyone think of a good reason for private feedback?"

NO!!! There is none!! It's someone who doesn't want to start over from scratch and some people said really horrible stuff about them.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 22 September 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

I'll never buy from someone with private feedback again. I got my records, finally, but i was anxious the whole time.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 22 September 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

Well yeah, Scott, I've learnt a lesson here, but I've made hundreds of purchases from the USA before and never had a problem like this. Every other seller charges between $4.50 and $6 for a 7" and $9-12 for an LP. I have no problem paying those prices. I stupidly assumed this arsehole would be the same.

This is his last email to me (the pipe he is referring to is the crack pipe I told him to put down since he was convinced I was falsely claiming to reside in the US):

With respect to this pipe with which you seem so familiar, I'm afraid that 29 year old attorneys who went to Harvard undergrad, Cornell Law, finished top 5%, clerked for federal judges at both the district and appellate levels, and now is working at a top ten firm glabally, with 1300+ attorneys in over 30 offices throughout the globe, earning about $250,000.00 Depending on bonuses), and is dating a strinkingly beautiful attorney with whom I went to law school----well, I guess I'm saying that, unlike the filthy limey middle manager of the taco bell (just the The Office!! Ha, Ha, Ha!!)--that's you--I don't have the time or the need to deal with pipes.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 22 September 2005 14:18 (twenty years ago)

I would never deal with anyone with private feedback. Or a large amount of negatives after this guy. If he's such a big shot lawyer why is he wasting his time overcharging people for $3 garage punk singles anyway?

AleXTC (AleXTC), Thursday, 22 September 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

My only problem was when I bought the Liliput 2CD comp on KillRockStars for about £7. It was described as in 'like new' condition, yet both CDs looked as if they had been mounted onto a Black and Decker sander and used to flatten a pebbledash wall. Needless to say, they hardly played so I asked for my money back. Basically the stance was 'they played fine in my CD player' (impossible!) and you're on your own. I threatened negative feedback, they wrote a rude e-mail. Basically for the sake of £7, I didn't take it any further to protect my 100% positive feedback, but I did consider sending the disks back along with a dog turd for accompaniment. Maybe I still will.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 22 September 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

that sucks about the Liliput. my eBay addiction waned long ago, but every now and then I'll splurge on some vinyl from Japan (Super Roots!) or something I can't get in NYC..

anyhow, this negative feedback warfare you wisely decided to avoid, I've always wondered if you were real geeked out, couldn't one put in an Outlook reminder or mark one's calendar to neg someone the day before the 90 day feedback expiration point? as to avoid retaliatory feedback?

Mookie Wilson (mookie wilson), Thursday, 22 September 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

There was some guy about a year ago in the uk who was selling some recording gear, w/private feedback, and the reason he gave was kind of convincing.

Unfortunately I can't remember what it was exactly.

AleXTC (AleXTC), Thursday, 22 September 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

you know, you can also request phone numbers to call sellers/buyers and sort out the ordeals. it's so weird, though, when someone calls you from an ebay auction. once a guy called me just to ask if i was indeed telling the truth about a mint cond. boxed set. he's like, "hey, it's mike from the ebay auction." kinda weird... i'm used to talking to people on keyboards, like you all.

i finally put up sound samples of a soul single i was selling, just so i wouldn't have rabid northern soul fans calling my house to listen to it. "Oi, turn it up, i can't hear the horns" "you call that a dancer, you bloody cunt??" (thank you, i will be here all week with my bad impressions of former wigan casino devotees.)

well all this is why eBay shelled out the big bux to buy Skype. (an internet telephony company). pretty soon everyone will be yelling at each other through headsets.

Mookie Wilson (mookie wilson), Thursday, 22 September 2005 20:09 (twenty years ago)

are there any G3MM horror-stories out there?
my only problem thus far has been with grading. i ordered a MINT record that was barely playable because of copius scratches.

i've used gemm probably two dozen times, and i've been stooged only the once. the most irritating thing of all is that i've just been stooged on ebay for exactly the same three cd's each time (argh!!)

one year passes...
Here's my exchange with this guy who wants to buy a SW Radio from me

Bidder

Hello. I am a very avid SWL and I have been curious about that particular unit, as well as the super 909 sold by radiolabs.com.

Is it really that good? Is it really super sensitive? Could you do me a favor and turn it on at night and let me know how well it picks up in the 5 mhz range and going up?

I know I don't need that unit to listen to the underground political programming that I listen to, but I have been curious about this model but I cannot afford it. I just want to know how good it is.

Kevin

Me

Kevin, I'm really not that knowledgeable about sw radio, all I know is that it's a great appliance in fine working condition.

Bidder

Well I can tell you that it is one of the coolest things I have discovered in all my life.

It actually beats cable TV if you ask me.

You can listen to broadcasts from overseas and worldwide for free as well as many stations from here at home that feature much in the way of underground political programming of all types.

If you aren't into shortwave you don't know what you are missing.

The mainstream media will mention the corporate and controlled satellite radio and hd radio but there is a concerted effort to hide the existance of shortwave from the public at large.

okay man

G3mm: I've encountered a couple of sellers that have items listed as "in stock" but they mean "we'll send you a reply in, oh, half a year's time to tell you that it's out of print and we can't order it anywhere" (which is why I looked on G3MM in the first place, duh)

StanM (StanM), Monday, 29 January 2007 06:19 (nineteen years ago)

(half a year's vs. a half year's time? Suddenly unsure)

StanM (StanM), Monday, 29 January 2007 06:21 (nineteen years ago)

(no apostrophe, apart from that; what you said.)

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 29 January 2007 09:25 (nineteen years ago)

Bought an expensive Lp in Ex. condition. It was like it was rubbed in gravel. It was silly. The seller offered to repay 2 euros. 2 eur! Couldnt even leave negative feedback. Classic Ebay.

jon person (jon person), Monday, 29 January 2007 09:36 (nineteen years ago)

Never leave feedback until you've checked it.

I also got an album like that. I immediately complained and the seller immediately offered moneyback on return. I promptly sent it, they said they never had it. So I raised it as a 'dissatisfaction' with e-bay, and I did get my refund.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 29 January 2007 09:51 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...

Just added a 7" to my watch list. Then noticed the seller is charging $57.40 to ship to the UK! Er, don't think so mate.

Colonel Poo, Friday, 4 July 2008 16:31 (seventeen years ago)

eBay sucks. The new page layout sucks, the fact that seller's can no longer leave negative feedback sucks, and the rising ebay fees suck. Fuck a eBay.

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Friday, 4 July 2008 16:48 (seventeen years ago)

seven months pass...

^^ roger otm. I DESPISE the new item page design with every fiber of my being.

However, here is the weird thing: On my work computer, listings still display in the "old" format. On my home computer, it's the new, despised, piece of crap design.

Anybody have any ideas why that would be? I don't see a setting anywhere where we can choose which design we prefer, so I can't account for the discrepancy.

I use Firefox in both locations.

Stylez G. White (Stormy Davis), Saturday, 7 February 2009 18:42 (seventeen years ago)

fifteen years pass...

I looked up one of John Zorn's Film Works collections on eBay, and you know how if you look at a listing that's been closed, eBay will try to match you with another that's active?

This is what they took me to.

(And for confirmation, if you click on "View original listing" on the upper right, you'll see it was indeed that John Zorn title.)

They're both from NYC and they're both Jewish...is that what the algorithm's looking at?

birdistheword, Sunday, 2 June 2024 00:49 (two years ago)

Nothing so peculiar as far as I can see. It's just incorrect text contained in the so-called 'Item specifics', and also the 'Item description'. Both mention the Neil Diamond Greatest Hits album. I would guess the seller edited another listing to create the Zorn listing, but failed to remove or change the incorrect text.
