Who did the 80s remake of Del Shannon's Runaway?

For the life of me, I cannot figure out who remade Del Shannon's "Runaway." The video was on MTV in the mid-80s. I've done every lyric search possible. It's not Slade's "Run Runaway." Here are the lyrics

"As I walk along I wonder
What went wrong with our love
A love that was so strong
And as I still walk on I think of
The things we've done together
While our hearts were young

I'm a-walking in the rain
Tears are falling and I feel the pain
Wishing you were here by me
To end this misery and I wonder
I wah, wah, wah, wah wonder
Why Why, why, why, why, why she ran away
And I wonder when she will stay
My little runaway a-run, run, run, run, a-runaway

I'm a-walking in the rain
Tears are falling and I feel the pain
Wishing you were here by me
To end this misery and I wonder
I wah, wah, wah, wah wonder
Why Why, why, why, why, why she ran away
And I wonder when she will stay
My little runaway, a-run, run, run, run, a-runaway
Run run run run runaway
Run run run run runaway"

Please help?!?!?! It's killing me.

Thanks

It's yer man Shannon himself. Video's on Launch, was done for Michael Mann's 1986 TV series 'Crime Story' or something like that.

More specifically, it can be found from this page.

And it is ace.

Lots of covers of "Runaway", of course, but it probably is DS's own remake you seek. Bonnie Raitt made it one of her staples for awhile -- slowed down & not as exciting.

RIP, Del Shannon.

That's not the video I remember. It was more of an 80s band that did the remake.

Natasha, Friday, 23 September 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

Err...I think it was more like an 80s hair band that did a remake.

Natasha, Friday, 23 September 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

Allison Krauss did it too, with video of teen country girl, getting real lost in the city (the video was better than the audio)

didn't a just-pre-fame bon jovi cover it and do a crap video with them in a junkyard and there was a monster behind them or something?

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Friday, 23 September 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

Bon Jovi's first hit was "Runaway," their own song.

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 23 September 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

ah, not a cover then.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Friday, 23 September 2005 19:02 (twenty years ago)

i think i remember this song, wasn't the drummer playing behind a monstrously large drum set (in terms of number of different pieces, not scale)? i seem to remember that for some reason, but yeah - total hair metal band.

jonviachicago, Friday, 23 September 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

The band wasn't Bon Jovi. However, there was a dinosaur-type monster in the video. I believe it was in a junkyard though. Gosh, I wish I could remember who did the remake.

Natasha, Friday, 23 September 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

the Shannon remake was for Wiseguy, right?

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Friday, 23 September 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

It was Luis Cardenas, drummer from Renegade.

bonnie raitt's cover of it was her first chart hit, no?

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 24 September 2005 01:28 (twenty years ago)

Was it the Bodeans? I haven't heard it in ages, but I thought their "Runaway" was an original song, not a Del Shannon cover. Memory is vague, however...

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Saturday, 24 September 2005 01:36 (twenty years ago)

BoDeans' "Runaway" is a different song from both the Del Shannon and Bon Jovi songs. And they're all different from the Jefferson Starship "Runaway" that no one's mentioned yet. But the Del Shannon one is the same as the one Tony Orlando & Dawn merged into an incomprehensibly bizarro medley/mashup with "Happy Together" back in '72.

I think I found it with a little help from my coworker. I think it's the remake by ForceField. Unfortunately, I cannot find any clips of the video and song to confirm this. Anyone know where I can listen to it?

Natasha, Saturday, 24 September 2005 02:06 (twenty years ago)

Nevermind, it was Luis Cardenas. Who could forget the darn dinosaurs in that video??!?!?!?! Thanks for the help!

what are you wearing natasha ?

talcum kid, Saturday, 24 September 2005 05:00 (twenty years ago)

xpost Joseph: based on prev xperience, I can well imagine that "my little Runaway" eventually runs into the midst of the mist of the kind of 70s street people who did indeed chant the likes of "So Happy Together, so how is the weather, la-la-la, we're hap-py, to,gethhhhher," and she runs away but then somehow they're all around her again, cos "I can't see me lovin, no BODY butt you!" "Run run, run run" indeed.

I have here a Del version done for "Crime Story," which I guess was a TV show back in the '80s? I never watched it.

And I want to hear "Runaway" with "Happy Together" by Tony Orlando and Dawn, yes I do.

I've seen about half of Crime Story on DVD. It's a pretty good show, an obvious predecessor to a bunch of stuff that's gotten lots of praise since. Also, the version of "Runaway" used for the credits is almost as good as the early 60s original.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Sunday, 25 September 2005 03:52 (twenty years ago)

Didn't watch it til syndicated on USA, but then it was on five nights a week, and I really got caught up in the arc: starts the opposite of Michael Mann's other show, Miami Vice (he was involved early on, left it stank after that). Murky, brown, bodies not only near the Stockyards and under the El (this is late 50s Chicago;I used to visit there as child, and I remember all this).Even down by the nasty, swampy old Chicago River ("Chicago" means "bad smell" according to some scholars of Native American dialects, plain "bog" to others.) Dennis Farina, the lantern-jawed mustache who's been in a million things since, was still an actual Chicago cop then, and this what he did on weekends. Suddenly, all the gangsters on the show moved to Vegas, and the Chitown cops followed, on special assignment, and it exploded into this Pop Art Dick Tracy Atom Cadillac Desert Character Actor Voyage thru the 50s and 60s!(Cops reading A Coney Island Of The Mind, etc, but still *cops*)I don't remember a Runaway, but might've been mocking one of the goodfellas on the lam?
