I love the sound of those two bands. Spacemen 3 as well... I'm guessing they're in the "shoegazer" genre or something? Psychedelia? Fuck it I don't know ... but what bands/artists influenced this fuzzy sounding layered sonic madness?

erehwon (greentypewriter), Friday, 23 September 2005 21:00 (twenty years ago)

LSD

Old School (sexyDancer), Friday, 23 September 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

Electric Prunes, Hawkwind, Misunderstood, Velvets, tons of krautrock. Plus yeah drugs.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 23 September 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

Kevin Shields admits being influenced by Sonic Youth.

donut Get Behind Me Carbon Dioxide (donut), Friday, 23 September 2005 21:08 (twenty years ago)

Stooges, MC5, Sonic Youth, Jesus and Mary Chain

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 23 September 2005 21:08 (twenty years ago)

Transitively, Glenn Branca is worth mentioning here too.

Eno

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Friday, 23 September 2005 21:09 (twenty years ago)

As for FSA: Wire, Syd Barrett/early Floyd, Pearls Before Swine

Not an influence as much as a GROSSLY underrated peer, but Supercollider, Bugskull, Supreme Dicks.

...

Eno is a GREAT call for both.

donut Get Behind Me Carbon Dioxide (donut), Friday, 23 September 2005 21:10 (twenty years ago)

Pink Floyd
Dr. Mix and the ReMix (Is that the right name?)
AMM
Television Personalities (The Mummy You're Not Watching Me LP)

Justin Farrar (Justin Farrar), Friday, 23 September 2005 21:11 (twenty years ago)

I guess Wire goes for both too, since both bands have covered them.

The Byrds (especially "Eight Miles High" for Kevin Shields).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 23 September 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

Kevin Shields became a huge Dinosaur Jr. fan in the mid-80s.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 23 September 2005 21:16 (twenty years ago)

also Husker Du...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 23 September 2005 21:16 (twenty years ago)

yeah, Dino Jr, Red Krayola, Husker du, 13th-Floor Elevators, Stooges, MC5, Suicide, VU, Krautrock, Spacemen 3, and drugs

heh. i would go so far as to say both versions of "Eight Miles High:" the Byrds and Husker Du.

I vaguely remember Shields talking about the Birthday Party or something. HAPPY B-DAY TO NICK CAVE BTW WE LOVE YOU NICK WOOOOOOOOWOOOOOOO!

*Sorry, I just wish ILM could be more like TRL.

Cunga (Cunga), Friday, 23 September 2005 22:20 (twenty years ago)

MBV used to be very much in the vein of The Birthday Party (pre Bilinda).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 23 September 2005 22:22 (twenty years ago)

it's just Dr. Mix and the Remix, no need to capitalize the second M.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 23 September 2005 22:35 (twenty years ago)

Everything on this compilation CD

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Friday, 23 September 2005 22:46 (twenty years ago)

I influenced both of them by existing. It's a retroactive influence I admit.

All answers above apply. Do not however forget Dusty Springfield. More here.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 23 September 2005 22:53 (twenty years ago)

BAND OF SUSANS

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Friday, 23 September 2005 23:55 (twenty years ago)

Popol Vuh

Jacobs (LolVStein), Saturday, 24 September 2005 01:21 (twenty years ago)

At least FSA, they even titled a few songs popol vuh

Jacobs (LolVStein), Saturday, 24 September 2005 01:28 (twenty years ago)

No one has mentioned The Cocteau Twins influence on MBV. Along with Dinosaur Jr and Sonic Youth, that's MBV circa Say Anything. By Loveless, Shields had developed his own sound, the antecedents becoming much less discernable.

FSA is trickier. I'd say they had a lot of the influences listed above, but developed a lot of their sound through the limitation of their recording gear.

Everyone who has had a four-track and a bag of weed can relate. Overload the pre-amps/input jacks, signal in the red, delay pedal and your off!

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Saturday, 24 September 2005 02:18 (twenty years ago)

Um. Maybe I'm just stupid, but I hear a fair amount of the Jesus and Mary Chain in the Valentines. I always took it a bit for granted that the 'Chain were a major influence on MBV and the scene that sprang up in their wake.

owen moorhead (i heart daniel miller), Saturday, 24 September 2005 03:29 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, for me, I' usually think of The Jesus and Mary Chain in this category.

Tokyo Ghost Stories (Tokyo Ghost Stories), Saturday, 24 September 2005 04:07 (twenty years ago)

wasn't sheilds a big jungle fan? didn't he make a shelved d'n'b record?

immersiveness was the ol' 90's (revived) catch phrase. terry reilly/drone/lamont young to thread etc.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Saturday, 24 September 2005 05:55 (twenty years ago)

fuck actually i just listened to TEF InVersion disc - jungle trax therein.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Saturday, 24 September 2005 05:56 (twenty years ago)

that's MBV circa Say Anything

I know you meant Isn't Anything but I want to thank you for giving me the hilarious mental image of John Cusack holding a boom-box over his head with Only Shallow playing.

Cunga (Cunga), Saturday, 24 September 2005 06:20 (twenty years ago)

arthur russell - you can make me feel bad (when was this composed, actually?)

jermaine (jnoble), Saturday, 24 September 2005 10:26 (twenty years ago)

Say Anything. I really need to read my posts before I hit submit.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Saturday, 24 September 2005 13:25 (twenty years ago)

I remember reading in that AOL interview with Kevin Shields when asked what he was listening to he said something to the likes of "I've been listening to a lot of jungle music"

A kevin Shields Jungle production. Curiosity most certainly has been born out of this. I can't help but think of Graham Sutton and his Boymerang stuff, but Kevin Shields hmmmm. I guess I'll just keep listening to the beinning of Sometimes and be satisfied with that.

Tokyo Ghost Stories (Tokyo Ghost Stories), Sunday, 25 September 2005 03:32 (twenty years ago)

Try Semtex by Third Eye Foundation if you can find it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 25 September 2005 03:41 (twenty years ago)

Another early influence were The Cramps

antonio navarro, Sunday, 25 September 2005 06:45 (twenty years ago)
