i know the person who wrote this "lords" review is probably 19 or something, but this is so wrong:
These days the once great divide between musical genres is little more than a crack. There was a time when punk, hardcore, metal, and rock were virtually miles apart. In the 80s, when all of those genres were going strong, the members of each scene treated theirs like a religion, and relating to, borrowing from or, frankly, enjoying any of the others were surefire ways to be subjected to ridicule and scorn.

maybe it's true?

dog latin (dog latin), Saturday, 24 September 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

Ooof, so wrong.

My favorite example to the contrary is that in 1979-1983 NYC's downtown avantgarde scene actively fraternized with BOTH the gay club scene and the Bronx hip-hop scene. In the words of Martin Bisi, "it was completely normal to see Thurston Moore, pre-"Borderline" Madonna and a bunch of rap dudes at an East Village art show."

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Saturday, 24 September 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

I guess he's refering to the 80's that didn't include metallica, bad brains, slayer, venom, motorhead, suicidal tendencies, public enemy, danzig/samhain, agnostic front, the cro-mags, etc etc etc

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Saturday, 24 September 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

I think this sort of separation is always truer for younger people.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 24 September 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

This is why the young must die. I might perhaps be seen as harsh.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 24 September 2005 15:46 (twenty years ago)

Neds can be so cruel.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 24 September 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

Not only must they die, but first they must get old and bitter -- the cruelest blow of all.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Saturday, 24 September 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

You'd think an editor might simply send this back to the writer, accompanied with a brief note saying "Do some research."

It makes the publication look unprofessional.

It makes the publication look unprofessional.

Uhhh...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 24 September 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

the 80s were in the times before a lad named Beck showed us the joy of mixing and matching musical genres

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Saturday, 24 September 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

And I think we know who we have to thank for him.

L Ron?

Who else could give us such a wonderful gift?

I actually think the writer's correct that *as a rule* (as opposed to in particular scenes - like London or NYC late-seventies, fuck, as if *that's* not exceptional) - kids listen to a wider range of music now.

reason = the internet.

kids listen to a wider range of music now.

Standard brainless meme on kids as evolved. Yes, of course, they're broadened and superior because playing computer games and fiddling around on myspace has made them more adept with technology and their genome more DNAstically superior than any which have gone by already. They only beat each other senseless in bars, the moshpit, college football games and soccer matches decades ago. Tilt!

Since I know some of you wacky pitchfork writers lurk here, could you guys please do one a them there "critical reevaluation" thingies of D.R.I./Suicidal Tendencies/CoC/other skate metal? Come on, if you guys can get all up on the Doobie Brothers' bozak there's no excuse. I know it means pushing back that Foghat retrospective y'alls been prepping for weeks, but clearly this is more important. Do it for the kids, so we don't have to read such fatuous bullshit anymore.
