Did the Wedding Present cover Pavement or vice versa?

MickJ, Sunday, 25 September 2005 21:21 (twenty years ago)

pavement = original

Presumably the confusion arises because the first version most people heard was the WP version as opposed to the (then virtually unknown) Pavement - 'Bizarro' was 1989 and 'Westing...' 1992 wasn't it?

The Wedding Present covered Pavement, but called it "Box Elder Mo" for some reason.

That's what I thought, but now I'm wondering is how the hell Wedding Present knew about Pavement in early 1989.

MickJ, Sunday, 25 September 2005 22:06 (twenty years ago)

They were cool. Cooler than Pavement.

From an old Weddoes FAQ:

Q5.2 Did TWP cover a Pavement song? Where can I find the original?

A5.2 David Gedge: "Keith returned from a holiday in America in 1989 with a cassette of ["Box Elder"] which we all liked and decided to cover on the Brassneck E.P. "

It can also be found on the American version of Bizarro, as well as Hit Parade 3.

The original version by Pavement can be found on the Slay Tracks record, as well as their Westing (By Musket & Sextant) compilation.

This question comes up because Pavement were not credited on the US version, though they were on the UK version. Also the copyright date on Westing is later than that of Bizarro, leading people to believe that Pavement covered TWP.

According to Perfect Sound Forever, it was Mark Ibold (not yet bassist for Pavement) who recommended the Slay Tracks EP to Keith Gregory on that holiday.

And the "Mo" in the title, if anyone cares, is the postal abbreviation for Missouri, which Box Elder is presumably located somewhere within.

there is no box elder in missouri. there's one in montana (postal code: MT). maybe that's what he meant to say.

On the other hand, a lot of what Stephen Malkmus sings seems to make very little sense. I myself was surprised to discover via the expanded edition of "Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain" that "Stop Breathin'" is about tennis.

There is a Box Elder, Mo. It's located on the Missouri/Arkansas stateline on the far eastern side of both states, in the bootheel. It's not really an incorporated municipality, no zip code of its own or anything, but it is a community. Drove up there one day to take a picture and damned if my camera's batteries had run out of juice.

It doesn't say it here, but this is where Box Elder, Mo. is located. I've got a DeLorme Atlas that does denote the community.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Monday, 26 September 2005 06:17 (twenty years ago)

Well, I didn't think it was possible for me to have any more respect for Pavement than I already have, but, um, I guess it was possible.

WP also covered Pell Mell too. (Then again, Steve Fisk recorded them)
