electrohouse producers/labels who need to have a re-think

Dirt Crew-usually cheap sounding rip offs of other peoples sound, like mylo pre-fame. alternatively, really tacky "old school" noises usually found in bad nu-breaks.

Zoo Brazil-just for their non stop release schedule, how many 12s have they had in the last 3 months? At least 4. How many have been any good? erm.....

Phonique-See Zoo Brazil, endless stream of releases, all rubbish. Also gives his tracks annoying names like "The Weapon", because apparently it's his key track he plays when out, or "Deep Tool #1". PS: Both "The Weapon" and "Deep Tool #1" are crap! do

Others?

(I'm waiting for someone to say ALL OF THEM or whatever)

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 26 September 2005 08:20 (twenty years ago)

ignore the superficial "do" there aswell

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 26 September 2005 08:20 (twenty years ago)

labelwise I have to say Déssous, are their own artists ever any good without remixes? they are like Pokerflat's deprived little brother. also do they ever release anything except phonique tracks which are buoyed by great remixes?

Crosstown Rebels I would ordinarily say too, but they may be changing their fortunes a bit.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 26 September 2005 08:22 (twenty years ago)

Hah I thought Dessous WAS phonique, I've never heard anything from it not by them.

I don't pay enough attention to electro-house to join in the hatery on anything specific. A lot of it doesn't agree with me somehow but I'm not sure who in particular it is.

"Crosstown Rebels I would ordinarily say too, but they may be changing their fortunes a bit. "

I've only been following Crosstown Rebels recently (so maybe I unwittingly agree with you), but WTF Ronan, the "Safari" remixes, the Pier Bucci EP, "The Crocodile", Silversurfer's "Parisis"... Great stuff!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 26 September 2005 12:22 (twenty years ago)

isn't that do more superfluous than superficial?

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Monday, 26 September 2005 12:42 (twenty years ago)

The upcoming Pier Bucci CD on Crosstown Rebels is a gem too.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 26 September 2005 12:44 (twenty years ago)

Parisis is recent isn't it? Plus not amazing I don't think, just quite functionally good. As is "The Horn", Safari remixes are recent enough too aren't they?

If you look at a list of the releases on CTR there are some really boring crap ones at the start, a good few, which out of only 24 or so releases is not so impressive, particularly not when you think that CTR is a definite hype label!

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 26 September 2005 13:22 (twenty years ago)

"do they ever release anything except phonique tracks which are buoyed by great remixes?"

Glowing Glisses - On The Bridge (Larry Heard's House Remixes)

Guido Schenider + Larry Heard ....= a classic!!!

nocure, Monday, 26 September 2005 13:24 (twenty years ago)

But it's not as good as the original (on Poker Flat)!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 26 September 2005 13:37 (twenty years ago)

All of them: Less big big analogue bassline/synth parts that sound like farts. More swing.

Overall they're all doing pretty damn good though! :)

tylero (tylero), Monday, 26 September 2005 13:41 (twenty years ago)

ok ... what about Gamat 3000, then?

I woulnd't be that tough on Dessous ... I know they are not hip a the moment, I know "deep house" is a dirty worde these days, but ...come on: I had a lot of fun with their erotic house series ... they are more decent than many other house compilations of their time ...

nocure, Monday, 26 September 2005 13:46 (twenty years ago)

To me: electrohouse producers/labels who need to have a re-think

Mylo
Alter Ego
Roman Flügel

nocure, Monday, 26 September 2005 13:56 (twenty years ago)

yeah I actually would be into early Dessous I think, I always liked the look of those Vincenzo comps.

I don't think deep house is a dirty word as such, just that there's an awful lot of quite boring electronic deep house that is just bland.

See also, alot of Mood Music's releases.

x-post agree on Alter Ego, just so boring, all this new stuff!

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 26 September 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, Mood Music is a quite inconsistent, isn't it?

nocure, Monday, 26 September 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it's weird. The Star You Star Me thing recently was amazing, just a lovely record, but I nearly missed it cos I barely bothered to listen after being disappointed by a good few Mood releases.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 26 September 2005 14:44 (twenty years ago)

Star You Star Me is pretty special. 2 Dawgs - It's A Dawgs Life is great too. Same goes for Sasse's Soul Sounds.
However Syntho's Concept EP is very formulaic. Didn't have the time to dig into the Unreleased series, but they do not look very appealing to me ...

nocure, Monday, 26 September 2005 15:13 (twenty years ago)

Roman Flügel

roman flugel has made so many great records in so many different styles over the years that i'm sure he'll reinvent himself soon.

there is one amazing zoo brazil track (can't remember it's name just now). it was so good that i have checked out all their other releases and come to the conclusion it must be a different act with the same name as their stuff is sooo bad.

i think there is currently a glut of copycat producers who need to re-think their entire reason for producing to begin with.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Monday, 26 September 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

I agree with everything you just said actually, nocure, it seems our Mood Music timeline is in sync.

stirmonster is the one you mean called "Elastic Face" or something? There is a good one on Get Physical (blatant Hardfloor rip but so are ten of their other releases!) but I think maybe the one you mean might be on a more obscure label, forget the name. Sounds very authentically Chicago? As far as I recall the vocal mix is shit but
the dub of it is really nice. Don't know if that's the one.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 26 September 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

that sounds like the one.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Monday, 26 September 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

i like the track "work together" by phonique (on dessous). it's not really electro-house though. it's more like a slick euro take on om records.

i also like some dirt crew stuff, but i think that it's time to move on from the aping of classic chicago house. there are some good singles on the dirt crew label. the old school sounds are what i like the best actually.

i think the electro-house style in general needs a re-think, but there are always gems to be found that adhere to some kind of standard formula as well as producers willing to take risks to take the genre elsewhere.

tricky (disco stu), Monday, 26 September 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

I agree there have been a few sub-par Zoo Brazil releases, which none of us have to buy. However, just this year, there's been "Express Yourself" (on Cartridge) and "Infinity" (B1 of "Crash", on the revived Harthouse), two tracks that made me very happy. Which is more than you can say for most records in the shop.

My fellow Dutchman Break 3000 of Dirt Crew has made the most epic record of the year in "Flash 1", so let's leave him alone, he has already done enough.

Never been a Phonique fan, so I'm not that bothered about him. Except for the Olaf Pozsgay remix that he did last year, which was good, and that song with Erlend Øye, "For the Time Being", that was a nice one.

JoB (JoB), Monday, 26 September 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

i like "fix" (and its b-side) better than "flash 1", but they are both great, totally spooky and paranoid and epic.

tricky (disco stu), Monday, 26 September 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

the b side of "weapon", "a walk in the club", is good.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 00:27 (twenty years ago)

ALL OF THEM or whatever.

I'm sorry, but I couldn't resist.

owen moorhead (i heart daniel miller), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 03:36 (twenty years ago)

Your friend is good Job! Break 3000 are much better than the Dirt Crew, much much better!

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 09:42 (twenty years ago)

but, Break 3000 is one half of the Dirt Crew ...
Dare I say it? I like "The Weapon", and no, I do not like what I heard from Zoo Brazil.
I need to check Break 3000, starting with "Fix / Disco_7", then "Flash" ... and what about Flash (Remute Remix)??? Is it worthwhile?

nocure, Tuesday, 27 September 2005 10:37 (twenty years ago)

(BTW, Break 3000 is not my friend, I've never met him, he's from as far away from Amsterdam as you can get without crossing the border (Maastricht), and in fact he has, I think he lives in Berlin.)

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 11:20 (twenty years ago)

haha I discovered Break 3000 was in Dirt Crew yesterday, but I can still say I think Dirt Crew are crap.

I do own one Dirt Crew 12, I regretted buying it all the way home.
