Japan, China, etc.

Can't seem to find anything solid on music from this region on AMG. Can anyone recommend a good place to start?

I spose I'm looking for something like the Oum Kalthoum of Japan.

Hmm. Not my strong suit, but have you checked out any of those Secret Museum of Mankind collections?

There are also Rough Guides to the music of both China and Japan - might be worth starting with those?

All the Nonesuch Explorer Series albums I have are seriously great, and there's a bunch of them. I think most are on CD now as well. They have lots of Japan/China/gamelan/etc.
