Eric B and Rakim changed lyrics with 'My Melody' in 86. Marley helped out.
Eric & Rakim changed the way space and samples were used in Hip-Hop production with 'I Know You Got Soul' in 1987.
Marley Marl was one of the first to take notw of the formula, and expand on it.
Trying to count how many songs between 87 and 89 where he (along with the Bomb Squad) upped the ante would be impossible, but lately, I've been feeling Kool G Rap & Polo's "Poison".
I think I was won over with Big Daddy Kane's Raw initially.
I bought the Pop Art 12 for Roxanne's Revenge yesterday in a crate on Ave A, and the b-side inst has him doing more cuts that I expected.
I know, I know, the rumor that he didn't do the cuts on Marley Scratch...

Overall i'd say the best Marley produced album is "goin' off" by Biz. Flawless from front to back and, like "great adventures of.. slick rick" more or less every track is an anthem.
The Kane debut is very solid. That unreleased freestyle version of "raw" with Kool G. Rap that was on some Cold Chillin comp from 5 years ago or so is astonishing.
The first 'G Rap and Polo album is a bit spotty but it's still pretty incredible as it has the likes of "road to the riches", "it's a demo", "poison", "she loves me, she loves me not" and "men at work" on there.
Shante's B.D.P dis "have a nice day" is my favorite track to come outta the whole Bridge war.
"In control" volume 1 is full of filler but worth it for "the symphony", "the rebel" by Tragedy, "droppin' science" + "duck alert" by Craig G and "we write the songs" by Biz + Heavy D.
"In control" volume 2 is really, really bad and he says he just gave the label any old crap he had around the studio to get out of his Cold Chillin' contract. Only worth owning for "i be gettin' busy" by L.L and "america eats the young" by Tragedy/Intelligent Hoodlum and Chuck D.
Nothing needs to be said about "mama said knock you out".
The post-Juice Crew debut is alright and the Tragedy/Intelligent Hoodlum album was a favorite of mine back when it came out. "Arrest the president" is awesome.
I never heard the first Master Ace album for some reason but "me and the biz" with the Cymande sample was ace.
First M.C Shan album is solid with the superb song "living in the world of hip hop", second Shan album had a few good tracks like "so def" and "i pioneered this" but other than that it sucked.
Can't forget the cuts he did for Spoonie Gee in '87. Everyone knows "the godfather" but the other cuts he did for Spoonie like "spoonie gee" and "she's my girl". Those are some of the best work by either.
I remember he did some tracks for Lords Of The Underground but i forget which ones as K Def was helping him out a lot then.
He did a few nice productions on the downlow in the late 90s like "on the real" by Kamikazee, Nas + Cormega, "snakes" by Kamikazee and a Japanese bootleg with two unreleased tracks by LL ("haters") and Common (the suprisingly tough "funk shit"). He tends to only make beats to use on his radio show these days.
Avoid that BBE album of his at all costs.
Interesting tidbit of info is that B.D.P's "the bridge is over" was actually a Marley Marl drumtrack that Krs One and Scott La Rock found in powerplay studio. Must have stung when Marley got dissed on a beat he'd produced.

2 or 3 xmas's ago I went into the Virgin Megastore in union square to buy my girlfriend the "One Kiss Can Lead to Another" boxset and happened upon a release event for the CD where Marl mixes West End classics. With Mel Cheren standing next to him on stage, Marl proceeded to cut and scratch (via 2 pioneer CD players) a 20 minute megamix of all his classics as well as some of those West End breaks (Heartbeat, Sessomatto etc). I was one of 30 people there, it was an awesome performance and I couldn't believe my luck that I just happened to be walking by as it started.
