This is the thread where you tell me whether SON OF NUGGETS is crap or genius

The Other Half wants Son of Nuggets for our anniversary. He is convinced that it will be great simply because it's from Rhino.
I am convinced he would think Great Farts on Snare Drums: A Decade of Gas would be brilliant if it was released by Rhino, but that is neither here nor there.

Does anyone own this box set and what do you think?

Catty (Catty), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 11:14 (twenty years ago)

So, this is the followup box for Nuggets (USA) and Nuggets (everywhere else), right?

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 11:18 (twenty years ago)

I think so. It was described to me as all the bands in the 80s and 90s that heard Nuggets (the original, I'm assuming) and said, Hey, Let's Form A Band!

which could go either way, really.

Catty (Catty), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 11:19 (twenty years ago)

wait, sorry, that's CHILDREN OF NUGGETS. my bad.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 11:32 (twenty years ago)

Well, the ones I know are great, so I'd like one.

Seems to be a bit light on sources, as Two track from the stratosphears? And "Motorbike Beat" The Revillos? Great, but does it qualify?

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 11:36 (twenty years ago)

i saw it last night for the first time. at first i was like holy crap, someone made a paisly underground box set! but the more I looked at the tracklisting the more dissapointed I was. Like, on one hand I wish it went deeper...on the other hand, even though it's not my "scene", where's the Gories? Oblivians? etc

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 11:38 (twenty years ago)

Looks great to me. Better than the original Nuggets, as a matter of fact.

And I guess, for once, they haven't been using the mono versions either :)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 11:38 (twenty years ago)

Looking over this track listing makes me ponder once again why Mr Catty needs this box set when he's got just about every fucking thing on it. It's giving me the Left of the Dial flashbacks from last Xmas....

Catty (Catty), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 11:48 (twenty years ago)

Oh and "There she goes" the La's.

Two questions...

If that's on it, shouldn't "Loaded" Primal Scream be there too? It's the rules.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 11:50 (twenty years ago)

There is *some* primal scream on there.

what was the second question?

Catty (Catty), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 11:53 (twenty years ago)

The Oblivians & Gories aren't on it because it's supposed to be 80s Nuggets (with a few 70s exceptions). Except it has a Teenage Fanclub song from '91, so who knows. Maybe there'll be a Grandchildren of Nuggets for those bands.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 11:54 (twenty years ago)

I looked at it yesterday. Some fine stuff there, but like Mark implied....they could have done more.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 11:56 (twenty years ago)

Ah, second question... (um, I was going to delete that line, then forgot)

OK, Wot no Boo Radleys?

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 11:57 (twenty years ago)

Actually, more seriously, I remember Brian James of the Dammned was one of the first to try to revive 'psychedelia' after he left the band, back in 1978 or whenever. It was the band before "Tanz der youth" I think.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 11:59 (twenty years ago)

I didn't see it mention "80s", just the lost garage bands in between the original Nuggets and today's garage bands.

Better then the original nuggets? Not in my humble opinion.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 12:57 (twenty years ago)

Ful title: Children Of Nuggets: Original Artyfacts From The Second Psychedelic Era 1976-1995

Vic Funk, Wednesday, 28 September 2005 13:06 (twenty years ago)

So shouldn't there be some Brian Jonestown Massacre on there somewhere?

Catty (Catty), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 13:22 (twenty years ago)

I stand corrected. The first I heard of this was on the Bomp! email list, which I no longer subscribe to, and it was described as being an 80's comp, this was a while ago, maybe over a year ago.

There's hardly anything on it from the 90s though!

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 13:29 (twenty years ago)

The Other Half wants Son of Nuggets
The Other Half? They were already on Nuggets I- "Mr. Pharmacist," right?

k/l (Ken L), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

Actually I've just remembered, one theory put forward on the Bomp list as to why there's no Gories or Oblivians on this is because they would be on Son of Pebbles or Son of Back From The Grave, if such a thing existed.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

Nuggets had pleny of raw garage rock on it. The Sonics? I just think the "curators" of this box had their taste and bias. Hell, I would've filled it with Crystalized Movements songs.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 13:49 (twenty years ago)

I would say definitely worth it. These are good to great '80s bands that weren't so great that I had to get all their full albums (other than Plimsouls and Teenage Fanclub), but made really great songs. Some of the choices may be puzzling, but I'm looking forward to getting this.

Matt Carlson (mattsoncarlhew), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

There's not enough on this that I don't already have somewhere else, so I definitely won't be getting this, but I would say go for it if you're a newcomer to this sort of thing.

I still haven't got Nuggets II yet. I already have a lot of that on various Freakbeat comps, so I probably won't get that either unless I see it cheap somewhere (unlikely).

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 14:18 (twenty years ago)

I wish it was in chronological order.

But a hell of a good track list!
